So today I'm gonna show you how to sew a beanie lined with warm minky fabric. I'm using my own beanie pattern, the Sigge och Siri. Here I'm sewing a beanie in this beautiful jersey fabric, sponsored by Tygdrömmar, a design by LillaE design, and I'm lining it with minky that I bought from Tygdrömmar. Minky stretches horizontally so it is great to line a beanie with. But you should consider sewing a larger size than the size guide is showing you, especially if the fabric you're using to line with does not have good stretch. Minky doesn't need to be prewashed since it doesn't shrink. But don't forget to prewash your jersey or college fabric, since knit fabric shrinks. Let's get creative! 1. Today I'm the guest blogger on the Sweet Stars quilt sew-along, hosted by my lovely friend Peta from She Quilts A Lot who designed this quilt. You guys should recognise it - it was the star of the show in my Sweet Orchard booth at the spring quilt market in Salt Lake City. Here's a photo of me and Peta in front of it - we had to travel all the way from Australia to Utah to finally meet in person! And she is not only a terrific quilter but also a lovely sharing person with an incredible dry, Aussie sense of humour - we had a blast together in SLC! The Sweet Stars sew along kicked off just a couple of weeks ago (so there is plenty of time to join in!). There are a number of blocks in this quilt which have 'easy corner triangles' - in other words a triangle on the corner of a segment - such as in the diamond blocks, and the flying geese squares and rectangles. Today I am going to make a diamond block to show you my easy corner triangle method and how I get perfect, crisp results every time. ~ My 'Easy Corner Triangle' Method ~ Step 1. Starch! Starch your fabric before you cut out your block segments. I cannot emphasise how important this is - your precision will improve tenfold when you are working on starched fabric. You can use specialist quilting sprays such as Best Press or Flatter (which I love!), or if you are on a budget just ordinary supermarket starch will do too. I have tried a variety of starch sprays from my supermarket and prefer their cheapest one as it doesn't leave stains like some of the more expensive brands can do. Step 2 - Trace a diagonal line. Draw a line from corner-to-corner on the back of your corner square pieces. To do this place your quilting ruler on the square and align the 45 degree angle line along the top edge of the square, as shown in the picture. Note how I have positioned the ruler just 1mm to the left of the imaginary line going from one corner to the other - this is to allow for the thickness of the Frixion pen nib so your drawn line connects your corners precisely. I use Pilot Frixion pens for marking lines such as this which will be hidden in seams - you can use a pencil or a different quilt marker if you prefer. Step 3 - Position & Sew. Place the square on the corner of the pink fabric right sides together and pin, then sew along the drawn line. When sewing, bear in mind the weight of your thread. If you are using 50 weight or heavier thread you may want to sew a fraction of a mm to the right of the traced line to allow for the thickness of the thread, so you get a precise result when you fold the 'wing' over later. Tip: If you are sewing corners onto a large number of segments, I recommend chain piecing these i.e. sewing a corner onto a piece of fabric, then without breaking your thread sewing a corner onto the next of piece of fabric, and so on, so you end up with a long chain of pieces with one corner sewn on. Snip the threads, then repeat the process for the next corner on each piece. Step 4 - Trim excess. Trim the excess material approximately 1/4" away from the seam. Note the positioning of my ruler - I use a scant 1/4" allowance for this so the seam doesn't show when I fold the fabric over in the next step. Step 5 - Fold over & Press. Fold the 'wing' over and press towards the triangle. See how precise the corner triangle is, perfectly aligned with the edges of the pink fabric. Repeat the steps above for the other corners to complete the diamond block. And that concludes my little tutorial! ............This is definitely a long time coming.......finally finished........blimey......two finished blankets in a month......I need a rest now! Last year, I bought a book and fell in love with a blanket in it. Bought on Ebay I was still fairly new to crochet, but I had to have a go......so I made a start...then I stopped........then I started........then I stopped. I had too much buzzing in my head. I made a few hexagons........... .......liked what I made............. .....made a few more....decided what colour combos I liked and what I didn't (the yellowy/orangy one had to go as Mr H said it looked like a fajita kit packet!). The pattern said, well, I am not sure really, it was in Japanese, but I took it to be that it was 34 hexagons in total, but laid out, it looked like a small lap blanket (the picture in the book showed it and it looked rather small), so I doubled it to 68. That's why it took so long. I left it in my pile of WIP's until two weeks ago when I made the last 20 hexagons and started to sew it all together and put the border on. So....want to see the finished article? ❀❀❀❀❀ So......do I like it? Well, it's funny...........this blanket is soooooooooooo not me in one sense. I mean, it has loads of colour, no one can say it's not vibrant, and I love vibrant........but the combinations are not ones that come naturally to me. I think it's the lack of white I found hard. I like bright colours, but I always seem to stick some white in somewhere to make the colours pop. I did think about adding white. Check out here to see what the blanket looks like with a white border around the hexagons. I think it looks totally ace like that too. The colours pop right out at you. I had already made a similar blanket from another japanese book, remember this one?..... ..........so I wanted this one to be quite different from that one. This latest blanket is bright...yet muted. Sounds weird. And...........I even put lavender in there! I found making those hexagons REALLY hard to do, but the funny thing was, when I laid out the hexagons without the lavender/purple shades in, it looked wrong, like something was missing. When I put them back in, it seemed right! I also realised when I went to make the last 20 hexagons that I had not read the pattern properly and a set of stitches was wrong in a row, (a combination of inexperience, and hastiness me thinks!), but the great thing about crochet is that it's no major deal. I also think that the pattern required you to stitch them together as you went along. I did it at the end. As a general rule, I don't really like putting things together as I go along as there is a tendency to group colours too close together so things end up a bit colour patchy! Having said that.....two WIP's I am having to stitch together as I go.........it just means I have to keep putting it at a distance to check what colours I am putting together. It slows me done. Never blessed with patience me! All in all, I ♥LOVE♥ it! A completely different kind of project for me, but none the less, I ♥LOVE♥it! It looks bright and vintage looking. The Bears love it, but Mr H is not quite feeling the love that I am for it! He says it looks very seventies and he is no fan of that era! I think this will be a garden blanket. It looks at home outside don't you think? So........I am blanket pooped! Smaller projects now. I have so many WIP's to be getting on with...but silly billy Nessa decided to start yet another new one! Might have that done by next week so watch this space..............! Have a super weekend. I hope there is a little bit of sun for you if not a HUGE heap this weekend.....and if you have rain........put on those wellies and raincoat and be young again.......it's fun to jump in puddles!!!!! First: a huge thank you for all of your comments on the Emmy. You all are the best and It's nice to be able to share some of the non-quilting in my life. Second: Last night I attended the first ever meeting of the LA Modern Quilt Guild. It was a great meeting full of amazing ladies and I'm so excited to meet like minded quilters in this area. If you live around here (or are willing to drive to LA) check out the guild. It looks to be a guild like no other, in a very good way! Third: Remember this guy? Probably not because I started it two and a half years ago. The plan was to hand quilt circles all over this mother. I worked on it some, my hand-quilting sucked. It wasn't fun. So it was put away. Well, two and a half years later I have resurrected this quilt from obscurity. I actually had to search for it when I decided to do this. The hand-quilting was out. It's not my style and I'm just not interested. So I ripped it all out. One of the reasons I didn't do this sooner is because I couldn't really think of a style of quilting that would work better than additional bubbles. Which is weird because once I came up with this straight lines idea, I liked it so much better! Maybe that's just my 2009 tastes compared to my 2007 tastes. Perhaps I'm less literal now. This is a fun little project. These cute little snack bags help reduce waste by not using Ziploc bags. Plus, you will look uber chic pulling one of these out of your bag. :) They are perfect for kids or those long car rides we all dread. Bonus? You choose what size & color bag you want or need, and they are eco friendly. No more mass produced bags! Except I doubt you want to marinate your chicken in these. Items Needed: Prewashed Fabric : I cut out (8) 7" x 6.5" pieces of cotton fabric. 4 pieces per bag. Seam allowance is 1/4" (already included in dimensions). If you want your liner fabric to be different like mine, you will need 2 pieces of fabric for the outside and 2 pieces for the inside. *You can also use laminated cotton for wet items like sandwiches, or you can head on over to Chica and Jo, who use plastic bags.* Light weight to medium fusible interfacing Marking pen, chalk, or pencil 12" long piece of Velcro Point turner for the corners (not necessary but nice to have) Hot iron Sewing Thread Sewing pins Measuring tape or quilter's ruler Sewing machine How to make your own reusable sandwich bag: Step 1. Iron out your fabric first. Measure your fabric, and mark dimensions. Cut out fabric, and iron again, if needed. Follow instructions on your interfacing, and apply to one side of the liner. Apply another piece of interfacing onto the second piece of liner. Step 2. Place a 6" strip of Velcro (either the fuzzy piece or the hook piece) 1/2" from the top of your fabric, and pin it onto the right side of your fabric. Stitch Velcro onto fabric. I stitched 3 rows to secure it tightly. Step 3. Place the liner right side up on your work surface. Velcro is at the top. Place your outside fabric face down lining up all the edges. Pin into place. Sew 1/4 from the top. This attaches the liner to the outside fabric. Step 4. Open your seams and iron flat. Fold fabric over and iron again. In my experience, ironing can make all the difference. You get more professional results, so don't skip this step. Set fabric aside. Repeat steps 1-4. Step 5. You will now need to join both liner pieces. Take your Velcros, and attach them together. Make sure they are straight and even. Pin the two liner pieces together. Your outside fabric pieces will be together on the opposite side. Sew the three sides of the liners together. Do not sew the top edge with the Velcro. Step 6. Sew the 3 sides of the outside fabric together, BUT you will need to leave a 2 inch opening at the bottom. Make sure you sew your corners though. This hole will allow you to pull all your fabric right side out. Don't sew the edge that is joined to the liner. Basically, you are repeating step 5 but for the outside fabric instead. Trim off excess seam allowance. Do not cut your stitches! Cut off your corners at an angle to reduce bulk. Step 7. THE PHOTO ABOVE IS ONLY TO SHOW YOU THE HOLE AT THE BOTTOM OF MY BAG. Your bag should be complete now with the exception of pulling out the fabric and stitching the hole. You will now need to push your fabric through this hole, so everything will be right side out. Using a turner tool, you can poke at the bottom corners carefully to have a sharper edge. Otherwise, you corners will be rounded. I know people who have used various objects to help push out corners, if you do not have this tool. Your options to close the hole are to slip stitch or sew the hole shut with a sewing machine. This will depend on your skill and the look you want. I am terrible at slip stitching, so I mostly use the machine because it is fast. My bags were done using the machine.
