First, here are the freebies- :) Poetry month has officially ended, but we are still enjoying writing poems in class! Last week, the students came up with four Cinquain poems (good review of verbs and adjectives), chose their favorite, and wrote/illustrated it on the template below (click to grab for free): I forgot to take pictures before I left work yesterday. :( I will have to post them another time. They came up with some pretty creative poems! Next week, I will be showing the students how to write a Diamante poem. We will be reading books about dinosaurs, so I've created a template for a dinosaur-themed Diamante poem! (Click for free download.) Most of my poetry writing inspiration has come from Rachael Parlett's Poetry Resources Packet! It includes many anchor charts and graphic organizers...be sure to check it out! The students will also be doing a persuasive writing piece where they have to write a convincing paragraph about why they should have a pet dinosaur! (Click for free download.) And a few fun things... :) We did the Best Friend Writing Activity from Amy Lemons. The kids LOVED this. What a fun writing topic! This is definitely one I will be doing again! We also made our "Area Puzzles" (idea from Amy Lemons) and wrote our Biography Poems! I can't believe that it is May already! I am excited to do the Watermelon Day and Bubble Fun Day mini-units from Aimee at Primarily Speaking. Last year, I did the Watermelon Day and it was loads of fun! I can't wait to try out the Bubble Day unit! If you are looking for some fun, common core aligned activities for the end of the year, be sure to check these out! Have a happy Cinco de Mayo!

Teaching math can be one of the most fun and most frustrating experiences. I love math. As Lindsay Lohan said in Mean Girls, it's the same in every country. Math is a constant. But teaching math can be it's own beast. Especially at the beginning, which is where we are with Logi-Bear. The funny thing

Howdy! I am Mr. Greg from The Kindergarten Smorgasboard. My real name is Greg Smedley-Warren. I have been teaching for 11 years. I spent a year teaching fifth grade, two years in second grade and am now in my 9th year in Kindergarten. Kindergarten is my passion and my calling but honestly, that wasn’t how it started. When I was moved to Kindergarten (not voluntarily!) I called my mommy and cried. But on the first day, I fell in love and knew that Kindergarten is where I belonged. I have remained in Kindergarten ever since. I plan to never leave the classroom as the kids are what drive me to continue my growth as a teacher and person.
The Dino Stomp was our first big event of the summer. What I loved about it is that it was planned almost entirely by Pinterest (gotta love Pinterest!). Our program was for ages 3-6. For us, programs with stations work best. We will have out instructions and examples at each of the stations. The librarian(s) in the room will refill the spaces as kids get up to leave. Unfortunately, we have learned that we can't put out all of the supplies at one time or people will do multiples or take them home. Here's what we did: Station 1-Dino Macaroni What screams dinosaur more than dinosaur bones (aka macaroni)? We used the pattern and idea from Busy Bee Crafts. Each skeleton uses 19 macaroni noodles and there are approximately 323 noodles in 1 16 oz. box of penne (or enough to make 17 dinosaurs). We used Elmer's School Glue Gel-it is the best stuff ever. It doesn't run (no matter how much they dump on) and it dries clear. It is hard to find. I have so far only seen it at Office Depot and Discount School Supply. Station 2-Dino Hats I like to have some sort of hat to make, because the kids look cute. Plus, then parents will take pictures and post them on social media, which ends up advertising the library. We found the idea here, but made some adaptations to fit us. To make your own dino hat, we took a piece of green posterboard and cut a 4 inch strip. We used our 1 1/2 inch circle punch to make the white part of the eyes and our 1 inch circle punch to make the black part. Our triangles are 3 inches wide and we cut them in red, orange, and yellow. Each hat uses 3 triangles at the top and we let the kids pick out their own colors. We used black washable markers to make the two dots for the nose. Then we fit the green circle to the kids' heads and stapled it together. Station 3-Dino Feet and 3-D Dinos We put two crafts at this station because they both used crayons. Our first project was a 3-D dinosaur. When we were ordering our AccuCut dies for summer reading, we found this great 3-D dinosaur die. We cut him out of cardstock and had the kids color him. The pieces slide easily together. We also made dinosaur feet. I found the idea and pattern at Make and Takes. We used green posterboard to precut all of the feet and the kids added their designs with crayons. We had a lot end up with "painted" toenails. Station 4-Dino Eggs Did you know that you can make your own dino eggs? We bought a bunch of plastic dinosaurs from Oriental Trading. I found a recipe to make dino eggs at Projects for Preschoolers. We quadrupled the recipe for 25 kids. We mixed up a big bucket, set it up outside, and had the kids form the "eggs" around their dinosaurs. What we learned is that you will want at least one person permanently running this station. Quite a few of the kids (almost half) did not want to put their hands into the dirt mixture so we made their eggs for them. We made our own stickers out of address labels telling the kids to let their dino egg dry and to break it open in a couple of days once dry. We also listed the contents of our egg mixture as at least one kid tends to eat our projects and this way the parents wouldn't worry too much (plus, there are all kinds of allergies now). We attached our stickers to plastic lunch bags and put the finished dino eggs inside the lunch bag so they were transportable and my boss didn't wonder why there were globs of mud all over the building. We also set up a dish tub filled with soapy water so the kids who did put their dinosaurs in the dirt mixture could wash their hand. Wrap-Up As always, we got a lot of compliments on the program. There is nothing cooler than seeing the kids wearing their dino hats and feet while sitting in the children's room reading books.
This dinosaurs coloring book is a great way to get kids off the devices and send them into creativity land. Original artwork by Danny Lenny.
Your students are going to LOVE using this dinosaur pick and color printable in your early childhood classroom!
So unlike most of the books and stories we've been doing this year, today's post is actually about a poem. The children were disappointed that there wasn't going to be a plot, but then they got very hyper... because.... well, roaring dinosaurs everywhere! Topic: All types of dinosaurs! Age: 4-7 Vocabulary: Adjectives mainly (fierce, meek, fast slow, slimey, clean, tiny, fat, weak, strong, short, long, sweet, grumpy, spikey, lumpy) and some misc (roar, squeek, above, below) Plus the phrase "gobble, gobble, nibble, nibble, munch, munch, scrunch". Procedure: Sing your hello song, fiercely, meekly, then roar and squeek it! Pre teach the words of the poem, through TPR. I suggest no more than six per lesson. Before you start warn the students that it isn't a story, but a poem. Open the book. I like to start by counting the dinosaurs on the inside of the cover. We count different colours each time, 'How many blue dinosaurs are there?'. I tell the poem and we count the tiny dinos on each double page spread. If you have pre-taught some of the adjectives then make sure you elicit them with the action as you go. I like to check they have understood any not yet pre-taught words, by looking at the pictures and asking them what they think it means in L1. Worksheet time! Try this lovely colouring page from the Dinosaur Roar website: http://www.dinosaurroar.com/downloads/DinosaurRoar-Printable-001.pdf Before you watch the video I would suggest an 'interest-gatherer'. Recite the chorus and do the actions and check the meaning. It goes like this: Oh the dinosaurs, big as trees, the dinosaurs, brains like peas, jaws and claws and teeth and bones, they used to growl and groan and moan. I like to pause the video, when it shows the lava and the dinosaur turning into a fossil to see if anyone can explain the video in L1. The kids are generally dying to show off their dinosaur knowledge. Extensions: http://www.dinosaurroar.com/downloads/DinosaurRoar-Printable-008.pdf - matching pairs Drawing dinosaurs competition Pattern completion worksheet can be easily made by drawing big and small, long and short and fast and slow dinosaurs like those in the book. Then here are some other dino videos for your dinosaur fans. A simple rhyme. This could be good for a game of musical statues, (now everbody, run fast/slowly/fiercely!) Stegosaurus tells us a bit about himself - for the older children. What's your favourite dinosaur?
Last September me and my co-workers feeling a bit... spacey. We had just finished a exhausting summer reading program, and we were ready for a simple theme with some crazy fun activities. So we decided to follow our gut and have a spacey month. We decorated with floating stars (fishing line again!), drank a lot of tang, and read some out of this world books (groaaaan). But my favorite story (by about 2,538,000 light years) was Aliens Love Underpants by Claire Freedman. Everyone loves aliens, and everyone loves underpants. However, we've read this story lots of times, so we wanted a way to make it more fun. We decided that underwear was the way to go. And not just any underwear. Underwear that could be whatever color, design, or type you wanted. That's right. We let the kids design their own underwear. I drew up some almost life size coloring sheets, then we printed them off and let the kids go to town. We got some really great underpants. One every talented boy even drew some zombie pants, and another had some awesome stripes. I, of course, had to color some Spiderman briefs. After the storyhour we had some extra coloring sheets, so I left them out on a table so the public could contribute. By the end of the week, all of the coloring sheets were gone, and we had a bunch of new pairs of underwear to hang up next to the others. (I'll let you in on a secret... I think the adults enjoyed coloring just as much as the kids.) And because I know you're jealous, here are some underpants to print out and color whatever way you want!
