Who doesn't know and love "Frere Jacques"? This is a folk song that most of your kids even know, but there is so much you can do with it. This is a great song to present half note, fa, low sol, part-singing, and so much more! I'm using it this year to present half note to my 2nd graders. We prepped and prepped half note at the end of last year, and have been reviewing it for this year. I'm just about ready to present it (my 2nd graders this year are just amazing - this is slightly earlier than I've done it with 2nd grade in the past). Anyway, we've been singing this song in class and doing different activities with it. I had them do this little game/dance that I sort of made up: Standing in a double circle in pairs, each circle walks to their right for 8 beats, then back for 8 beats to face their partner (1st 8 beats is "Frere Jacques," 2nd is "Dormez vous?") Play patty-cake on next 8 beats (Sonnez les matines) clap-right-clap-left, clap-right-clap-left On last 8 beats, wave good-bye and take one step to the right (opposite directions for circles) and face a new partner. Repeat. If you do this enough times, the kids should be standing in front of their original partners after a few turns. My kids loved this! I also loved that by counting the beats, they were internalizing that they took two steps on "vous" - a great prep for half note. Another activity they really enjoyed is identifying the long notes. We haven't labeled them yet, but they know where they are. I had some students come up and play a few instruments that make "bell" sounds - finger cymbals, triangles, etc on the long notes. Then, a student suggested that instead of singing, the instruments play the "din dan don" part on their own. So great! So, that inspired me to write a simple little Orff arrangement. Feel free to adapt it to your instruments, change parts up, etc. I've included a simple recorder part if you'd like to use it with recorders. I created a file for Teachers Pay Teachers that can help when you present the half note, fa, or low sol, as this song is great for all of them! It has a lot included, like iconic rhythmic notation: Iconic melodic notation: Actual rhythmic notation: Song lyrics in English and French, and more. You can find it here for $1.50 if you want to help contribute to my adoption fund :) Frere Jacques Since my focus this year is on music around the world, I'm choosing to teach this song in French. I was looking around the internet the other day, and found this great website that has video clips of kids from different European countries singing this song in their own language: Frere Jacques around the world. So cute! The kids get a kick out of this familiar song in so many languages!

Hi friends! How was your first week back at school? I have the sweetest class ever and I am enjoying them so much already! But I am finding it difficult to get into the swing of things. My new school is a late start school and the dismissal bell doesn't ring until 3:40! By the time our last student is picked up I feel like I have such little time before I need to pack up and leave to go home and make dinner! I'm hoping to get into a better routine soon :) Anyways, I used to do a Five for Friday post but since that linky is not being hosted anymore I thought I would pop in every Friday and do a weekly round-up type post. This way you can come here if you need direct links of things you see in my Instagram posts! So here are some of the activities we worked on this week! 1. BUILDING NAMES WITH LETTER BEADS I always set out lots of name activities the first week of school so I can find out if my students can recognize their name and the letters in their name. It is also great for encouraging the students to learn each other's names! I already had the uppercase letter beads from last year (I bought them from Michaels) and had just bough some lowercase letter beads from Learning Resources so I set them out with these name cards and encouraged the students to build their names! They did a great job with this! You can grab these editable name matching cards in my FREE name bag file by clicking here or on the image below: 2. NAME PLAY DOUGH MATS As usual, my new group loves play dough! I set out these name play dough mats and some alphabet cookie cutters I found at a local dollar store. You can grab these play dough mats in the same free editable file I mentioned above by clicking here. 3. HOW MANY BUGS IN THE BOX? This activity was a hit last year and a hit again this year! I read the students the book "How Many Bugs In a Box?". Then I showed them how to put bugs in a box, ask their partner "How many bugs do you think are in my box?" and have their partner guess a number between 1-10. The partner would grab the number card that matched their guess. Then the opened the box and counted the bugs to see if the guess was right. They loved this activity and it's great for one-to-one correspondence, numeral recognition, building community and oral language! 4. MAKING LETTERS WITH LOOSE PARTS I had these mats set-out with play dough the first few days but switched it with loose parts near the end of the week. They loved this one! Students were asked to build letters with loose parts using the tongs. The tongs are great for building strong finger muscles, which benefits all learners but especially those who are working up to printing with a pencil! You can find these playdough/loose parts mats you see above by clicking here. The white tray and letter beads are from Walmart. The wooden cubes and rocks are from Dollarama. The pom poms are from Michaels. The tongs are from Dollar Tree. Ok that's all I have for this week! I'm going to try to be better about taking pictures next week so I have more to share! Have a great weekend! - Yukari

Can you believe we only have 8 days of school left? Where did this year go? Looking back on all of the projects that we completed, I am very pleased with the quality and quantity of work that my students produced. I truly believe that I have the most talented, wonderfully amazing students in the world! While looking back over all of the projects, I was shocked and a little upset with myself that we didn't do printmaking this year. While in college, I LOVED printmaking. I even did an independent study in it and my entire senior art exhibition was printmaking. We did printmaking in 7th grade last year but I wanted to kick it up a notch this year and make it a bit more challenging. I decided to try reduction printmaking! For this project, I took a picture of the students and used paint.net to posterize the photos into 3 colors (black, grey and white). Students shaded on the back and transferred all of their white areas onto the linoleum. We use easy carve linoleum at school and it's so easy for the kids. We haven't had any slips (or bad cuts) this year! Students used the gauge to carve away all of the areas of their print that would be left white. Since we were printing on white paper, we didn't need to print this part. All that would be left would be the grey and black areas. They chose a color and mixed it with some white to make a tint. Then students pulled a proof. A proof is a practice print so they can see what it would look like. If they were happy with their proof, they could pull 10 or more quality prints. The students discussed what made a quality print and here is their list... enough ink, no white spots linoleum carved away where it was meant to be carved away (no stray marks) Ink has an orange peel texture No finger prints No smudges (where the paper slipped on the plate) After they printed 10 or more quality prints, they had to carve away all of the grey area, leaving only the black areas to print. They then mixed a shade of ink and printed on top of their first prints. Here is the final result

Teaching little learners to write their own name is one of the basic skills parents, preschool and kindergarten teachers alike are always looking for ways to practice. There are so many name activities out there to help little ones learn their own name. But name tracing is one of the easiest ways to get learners
I have to be honest with you. I am not a history buff. I find it fascinating and interesting and I truly am learning more than I ever did when I was in school. However, I’m still not good at remembering dates and timelines. But that doesn’t mean I don’t teach them to my children....

There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different sides they should see the suggestion of a face and they can begin sketching. I'm going to show them how to use the lines to begin the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin etc... When they have a face they like they should go over it with sharpie. Now they can use watercolor to finish the portrait. I am going to emphasize complementary colors which is another way to force them to be more abstract, but also something Picasso did in his paintings. Student Work I passed out a copy of this worksheet to help them think of different ways to make the features.

Fall QR Code: Online Reading Center Idea and a Freebie! Friends~I have been working on a little project for my kiddos and I am so excited to share part of it with you. Below you can see my QR Code Listening Center books. I have been reading my fall books into a voice recorder at Vocaroo. I then placed the code generated by Vocaroo into a QR Generator and out pops my Listening Center Codes. I still have tons to go but you can download a FREE copy of my codes below! My plan is to make small cards for students to scan with our classroom ipad and tablet. They will then be able to practice visualization while listening to the story or using the book to listen to the story to practice retelling. Here are a few I have done. See the codes on the books? I am placing the cards in my Listening Center and the books will go on our theme shelf in the classroom. I am hoping to be able to do this seasonally for my class! I also passed on the codes to our librarian and I am hoping she will add them to the copies in the library! I love reading your comments!

This wood bordered smart screen offers great custom features. Everything you seen on the screen allows rearrangement and changing in/out. If down the road you decide you want to make changes, I can absolutely help you through that as this is a very easy process. I am well versed in the tech field as I have been doing it for several years. The program was completed by me which is why I can help you very easily when it comes to these potential changes. The build in the picture is pine wood with just a clear coat glossy finish. The hooks in the picture on the wall are not part of the project but rather an example what you place with it. The build specifications are be endless. If you would like a different wood, finish, painted, stained, colored screws, etc. that can all be arranged. The build in the picture is done by using a 24 inch LED screen and a small computer placed inside the frame that runs the program responsible for the display you see. In the picture there are two cords that run down to the outlet, but plan for there to be only 1 cord. On the screen here you will see the weather on the top left which offers sunrise/sunset time, UV index, precipitation chance and inch total, temperature for your given city, and also divided hourly/daily. On the top right is a basic calendar and under is the calendar you can plugin to record events. I am using my google calendar to record events in this example. To reiterate, the initial plugin would be done for you and the events would update as you create them on your personal calendar. The symbols next to the events are also completely customizable. The bottom right is a sports ticker that updates everyday. Live scores will be updated as the game progress as well. The sports/teams displayed would be chosen by you. In the bottom middle there is a news ticker that can show which ever news feed you would like. In this example it rotates through the ESPN headlines of the day. When requesting an order, I will reach out to you to request any information needed to complete your custom/personal display. At the bare minimum, the details would be regarding the city for the weather, the sports/teams for the sports sections, news ticker, and the calendar you want to use for events.
