There are so many ways to teach Picasso portraits, I'm working with 3rd grade so I wanted to keep it simple. I'll show them some of Picasso's Portraits and then go into the project - demonstrating each step. I'm going to ask them to create diagonal folds, not even folds that create squares on their page, but more random folds. They should make about 5 folds and then using a ruler go over the fold lines with a sharpie. Looking at the lines on their page and turning it around from different sides they should see the suggestion of a face and they can begin sketching. I'm going to show them how to use the lines to begin the eyes, eyebrows, nose, mouth, chin etc... When they have a face they like they should go over it with sharpie. Now they can use watercolor to finish the portrait. I am going to emphasize complementary colors which is another way to force them to be more abstract, but also something Picasso did in his paintings. Student Work I passed out a copy of this worksheet to help them think of different ways to make the features.

I am going to have a post once a week this month for The Beatitudes. This week will begin the series with the lesson, visuals and more! I created two sets of visuals that you can use for younger or older students. These can also be used as a bulletin board. Come back next week for a really nice Interactive Bulletin Board with the printables to make yours (and more). Our lesson today is found in Matthew 5:1-13. There were so many people that wanted to see Jesus. So, Jesus went up on a mountain Once He sat down, the Disciples went to Jesus. Then Jesus taught them what we know as The Beatitudes. This is the beginning of the Sermon on the Mount. Jesus began each beatitude with Blessed are... Blessed means happy. (vs. 3) The first beatitude Jesus talks about is the poor in spirit. This means that Jesus wants us to be humble, not prideful or arrogant. Jesus doesn't want us to be braggers. Part of being humble is to do what Jesus wants, and not what we want. If we follow Jesus, He said we will receive the kingdom of heaven. (vs. 4) Jesus said Blessed are those who mourn. When you mourn, you are very sad, you might cry, and you are very upset. God want us to be sad about the sin in our life. He wants us to obey Him! When we follow Jesus, He will comfort us. (reassure, calm or soothe) (vs. 5) Next, Jesus said Blessed are the meek. If you are meek, you are gentle and submissive. Someone who is meek will think about others before themselves. Jesus talked a lot about helping others. Jesus finished this thought with if you are meek, you will inherit the earth. This means that if we put other people's needs before our own, we will go to heaven. (vs. 6) Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness. Jesus wants us to really desire to know Him. To know more about Him and to study the Bible and do what God wants, not what we want. If we seek Him, God will make sure we will be filled with His goodness. (vs. 7) Jesus said Blessed is the merciful. If you have mercy, you show compassion, kindness and forgiveness. Jesus showed mercy, and He wants us to show mercy to others. If we are merciful, then God will show us mercy. (vs. 8) Blessed are the pure in heart. Jesus wants us to live for Him, and try to live a Christian life. He wants us to follow His rules. It is sometimes hard to do because it is easy to be caught up in the world and do things our friends are doing that Jesus doesn't like. But if we are pure in heart, we will see God in heaven. (vs. 9) The next Blessed Jesus talks about are peacemakers. God wants us to 'make peace' with the people around us. As much as we can! This isn't always easy, but God wants us to try and do the best we can. If we make peace, then we will be called sons of God. (vs. 10) The last two Beatitudes that Jesus talked about go together. They are separated with the Blessed are, so I listed them as different Beatitudes. The first part is Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake. How can you be happy if you are being mistreated? God expects us to stand up for Him. Turn away from things of the world, especially if they keep you from doing what God wants. This might be something like your friends making fun of you for coming to worship. Don't let that stop you from worshipping God. If you continue to be faithful, no matter what people say or do to you, Jesus said the kingdom of heaven will be ours. (vs. 11-12) Jesus finishes up the beatitudes with “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. This continues His thoughts on staying faithful to Him, even if people are making fun of you (revile) for following Jesus. Jesus told us to celebrate and be happy that that people are 'reviling and persecuting' you because people did that to the prophets in the Old Testament that lived before Jesus. If people are making fun of you, then they can see that you are really living for Jesus and He said our reward will be great in heaven. Jesus told the people The Beatitudes. Jesus didn't say to pick which ones you think you can do. Jesus wants us to follow all The Beatitudes. Here is an extra poster that can be used with this lesson. My preacher mentioned this summary right when I was working on these posts! So, I decided to make an extra poster for this lesson. It can be printed in color or black & white. Click here to print the Righteousness poster. For today's printable, I created these Beatitudes Match-Up Cards. These are only available in black & white, so to add color, they can printed onto colored paper. After printing, cut them out, and cut on the dotted lines. Mix them up and let the students put the correct verses together. Click here to print. These are the visuals you see with the lesson. You can print these, or the set below. The visuals are only available in color. Click here to print the set. The above visuals for The Beatitudes were created for older students. The different sets of visuals are are really what you prefer for graphics. Either set can also be used for bulletin boards. Just print, add a title and scripture! Click here to print these visuals. The Bible Verse printables for this lesson has The Beatitudes scripture on it, and not the usual one verse. The smaller set for the students and a full size for the teacher in the download. Click here to print them. Scripture taken from the New King James Version®. Copyright © 1982 by Thomas Nelson. Used by permission. Today's lesson is here. Yah! Hey Y'all! It's Erin from The Elementary Darling! Summer has been flying and I go back to work tomorrow! so today I am going to chat about what your new students can do during Open House. I have enjoyed my summer full of Target trips, dollar store hunts, and family time but as the school year rolls around, I get equal parts excited and anxious. Back to school time is fun but also stressful and this year I am moving to a new school and a new grade level. Many of you are doing the same or even just one of those things, and while it is an exciting time, it is also a stressful time. To help with the stress of coming back to school and having Open House (or meet the teacher, or sneak a peek) I also started doing stations in my classroom. Yesterday, Theresa shared her station idea with you all. If you didn't read it, head here. I did something similar and you can read about those stations here on my blog. The only difference is that I found that my parents were doing the stations, and my students weren't always participating. OR one parent was taking the student to do the stations (LOVE) and the other was filling out the paperwork. {This is the ideal situation for my classroom.} My school was a Title One school and we had a ton of information and surveys for the parents to fill out. ***Insert big idea here*** I decided that I needed some things that students could do while the parents filled out all of the paperwork! You can make these a station OR you can just have them set out in the room and let the students do them. {Side note: if you teach Kinder babies you may want to make it a station, so their parents can help them.} Here are 10 ideas for student participation during Open House! 1.) Organize Supplies I love Theresa from True Life I'm a Teacher's idea of having the students take a scrapbook page to create a scrapbook. The students pick the color of their paper and they take it home to work on. I also love that she organizes her materials THAT NIGHT. This is a great activity for the kids to do! Everything is labeled and even if they can't read the words, you can put one of each item in the box and the students will know where to put the item. 2.) Selfie Wall Almost every kid knows how to take a selfie. This selfie wall or photo booth is a great and easy way for the students to snap a picture with a saying. I just put second grade on mine, but you can do anything! I also had to use a selfie stick because no one was at school to take my picture so excuse the terrible pose :) 3.) Photo Booth Another version of this is Chandra, from Teaching with Crayons and Curls, photo booth where she took a sparkly table cloth and the students used signs and got a picture. She did a Party theme and it was precious! 4.) Meet the Teacher Chart Kristin from School in the City created this cute chart to learn about the teacher. This would be cute for the kids to look at during open house. It is also easy to make for all grade levels! 5.) Estimation Station The students grab a post it note and write how many skittles they think are in the jar with their name. I check them all when Open House is over and I put all of the post its on an anchor chart for our math focus board. The student who gets the closest answer wins the jar on the first day of school! It makes an awesome first math lesson and gets the students excited. 6.) Post it Note Anchor Chart This is an easy and fun way for students to answer a question. They love choosing their post it note, and most grade levels can answer the question on their own. K-1 babies will need some help on this one, but even pictures are cute. My first graders did pretty well with this, the year that I did it! 7.) Choose your back to school gift! Sometimes I have my students' gifts on each desk as they walk in, but I think this year I am going to let them choose their own gift. They are either going to pick based on marker color or based on paper color, but who doesn't love a choice?!?! You can find these editable marker papers here in my TPT shop for FREE! 8.) Scavenger Hunt I have seen so many different scavenger hunts for students. I love the ones with the pictures, especially for the K-1 babies. There are too many to choose from, so my suggestion is to get on TPT or Pinterest and find the perfect one for you and your classroom! 9.) Find your seat or choose your seat. This may seem like an easy one, but many students, like us, are anxious. They may want to sit closer to the teacher, or the board and choosing his/her desk is an easy way for them to get excited for the year. My suggestion is to write the names on the name tags, have the students choose their name, and then place it on the desk they choose. If you need a more controlled environment, I understand! The students could just find their desk. Make sure to leave them something fun like ready confetti, jitter glitter, or a present to make them feel comfortable. 10.) Meet the Teacher Wait, they need to actually talk to you? YES! And this is the cheapest and easiest suggestion of them all! It is so important to take the time to talk to the student. Many times, the parents take over, and the kids just sit there. Have some "go to" questions to ask the students that are easy to answer. *What did you love about First Grade? (their previous grade) * What are you excited to learn about? * Do you love science? We are going to do some fun science experiments! *Did you get anything special to start the year off with? *or my Favorite- Do you think your mom and dad are ready for you to Second Grade? Just remember, these are suggestions. I don't think all of this is possible during one open house. It's like Target, just pick the one or two you need. {Who am I kidding, I need everything at Target.} Good Luck!

Located on the north-west part of the island, Paleokastritsa has quickly become one of my favourite destinations in Corfu. Made up of several pretty beaches overlooking a lagoon, the landscapes are absolutely breathtaking. The cypresses’ emerald, the water’s turquoise, the rock’s ivory… And the steep coast home to a monastery sitting on a cliff! Such a lovely setting. A place you shouldn’t miss if you are visiting Corfu!

Hi everyone! We are back to school here in California. I am done with my first week of Kindergarten. Only one more week to go until my students are somewhat independent. I don't know about you, but it seems like the first two weeks just get harder every year! Once the first two weeks are over I can get down to some real teaching. I have started using the DeeDee Wills and Deanna Jump Guided Math units. I LOVE them! I mean it. I LOVE them. If you have time, check out what they are on TpT. They are an excellent supplement to any Kindergarten math program. My students love them too. Math time is their favorite part of the day (except for dress-up.....)! Here are somethings we did this week, along with some pics of my classroom this year. I like to change it up every year. Keeps it fresh for me. Capital letter name page This our capital letter name page. Each child gets their own personal capital letter. I don't know about you, but I have many students coming to Kindergarten writing their names in all caps. It drives me crazy, so I try and emphasize that we have 1 capital letter in our name (most of the time anyway). This year I had students put small stickers inside their letter. I had a million left over from last year and I thought it would be a nice way to use them. You could also have them glue tissue paper in the letter, small objects like sequins or beads. I wasn't ready to break out the white glue, so we used stickers. Big Head Self-Portraits Aren't these adorable? These are self-portraits! Yep, this is how they see themselves. Amazing every time! Each child made one and practiced writing their name. I like to use a highlighter and have them trace it. In the beginning it is hard to trace on dotted lines. I also like to attach name writing practice to bigger activities. I think it makes it more meaningful. You can grab this cute template here so your students can make their own self-portraits. Below are some pictures of my classroom this year. I thought I would share. Rug area As seen from the back of the room. Objectives Board My math board. I hang the cards from the Wills and Jump Guided Math units so I have them handy. I always lose things right as I need them. This way I have everything at my fingertips. My reading board. The left has my Focus Board. This is for letter fluency. We read the letters (left to right, top to bottom) as quickly and correctly as we can. I have our alphafriend and how to write the letter of the week. The red rectangle will hold our weekly sight words. That is some of the classroom. I also have a writing wall (It has nothing on it yet) and an "Amazing Artists" wall (also, nothing on it yet). I will post pics of those soon.
