About the Book 'When Buddhism came to the West in the 1960s, many were eager to adapt it straightaway to the prevailing social and intellectual currents of its new home. One of those adaptations was the creation of a "socially engaged" Buddhism that could stand alongside similar developments in Christian and Jewish thought. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Beginning with what the tradition calls the path of "the holy life," a life free of every attachment to self and the delusions to which it gives rise, Geiman draws attention to the unique contribution the Dharma makes to one's understanding of the world, one's place within it, and the nature of wise and compassionate action in the face of human hardship. Along the way, he shows the limits of using the teaching of the Buddha and the Dharma Ancestors as support for social and political agendas of any kind. What emerges is a description of a noble life free of pretense and guile, which fearlessly and unshakably bears witness to the truth of our conditioned nature in the midst of human hardship--a life best described as standing alone in a world of wounds.' -- Book Synopsis When Buddhism came to the West in the 1960s, many were eager to adapt it straightaway to the prevailing social and intellectual currents of its new home. One of those adaptations was the creation of a ""socially engaged"" Buddhism that could stand alongside similar developments in Christian and Jewish thought. It seemed like a good idea at the time. Beginning with what the tradition calls the path of ""the holy life,"" a life free of every attachment to self and the delusions to which it gives rise, Geiman draws attention to the unique contribution the Dharma makes to one's understanding of the world, one's place within it, and the nature of wise and compassionate action in the face of human hardship. Along the way, he shows the limits of using the teaching of the Buddha and the Dharma Ancestors as support for social and political agendas of any kind. What emerges is a description of a noble life free of pretense and guile, which fearlessly and unshakably bears witness to the truth of our conditioned nature in the midst of human hardship--a life best described as standing alone in a world of wounds. Review Quotes "Geiman's timely and masterful yet simple engagement of dharma from a Buddhist perspective in Alone in a World of Wounds provides a new perspective on alleviating suffering in this world, emphasizing the realization of dharma and its agency in affirming that one is not alone in this world of wounds. This book is meant to be read deeply and to have its ideas employed in society to stop violence and atrocity and heal the world." --George Pati, co-editor of Transformational Embodiment in Asian Religions "Geiman provides an important balancing perspective on the purpose of the Buddha dharma for any era--not primarily to alter social or individual conditions of suffering but to eradicate the mental conditioning that gives rise to suffering and to embody that depth of freedom for others. It behooves socially engaged Buddhists to reflect deeply on Geiman's critique, to assess whether we are truly engaging the fullest liberating potential of the Buddha's teaching." --John J. Makransky, author of Buddahood Embodied About the Author Shodhin K. Geiman serves as a priest in the Rochester (Kapleau) lineage at the Chicago Zen Center in Evanston, Illinois. He is also associate professor of philosophy and theology at Valparaiso University. His scholarly work includes co-translating Jean-François Lyotard's Political Writings, and he is the author of a forthcoming comparative study of the logismoi in Evagrius and the nīvaranas in the Dharma of the Buddha. He was sanctioned as a teacher of the Dharma in 2021.

Wandjina rock painting - ( Kimberley Foundation ) … Aboriginal rock paintings in the Kimberley Bradshaw/ Gwion Gwion The Kimberley mountain ranges stretch across the northern tip of Western Australia. Joseph Bradshaw, an English pastoralist found the original rock art sites in 1891 on the Roe River in the north-west Kimberley. They became known as the Bradshaws, but currently the figures are more commonly known by their local Aboriginal name Gwion Gwion or Gwion, a name derived from one of the Aboriginal beliefs in the Kimberley that explains their origins. The Bradshaws are significant to world history because instead of

Some legends say the jackalope can imitate the human voice, and according to certain tall tales and rural legends of the Old West, when cowboys gathered by their campfires to sing at night, jackalopes could be heard in the distance mimicking their voices, or even singing along if they knew the words... Speaking of valentines and romantic doings, It is said that jackalopes (Lepus antilocapra), only breed during lightning flashes.. that is.. if their antlers don't get in the way!

In Singapore, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and other parts of East and Southeast Asia, as well as China, people are asking, \"What does Confucianism have to offer today?\" For some, Confucius is still the symbol of a reactionary and repressive past; for others, he is the humanist admired by generations of scholars and thinkers, East and West, for his ethical system and discipline. In the face of such complications, only a scholar of Theodore de Bary's stature could venture broad answers to the question of the significance of Confucianism in today's world.
Haruki Murakami quote about hurting from South of the Border, West of the Sun: “But I didn’t understand then. That I could hurt somebody so badly she would never recover. That a person can, just by living, damage another human being beyond repair.”
Archaeology in west Africa could rewrite the textbooks on human evolution
Scientists working off west Africa in the Cape Verde Islands have found evidence that the sudden collapse of a volcano there tens of thousands of years ago generated an ocean tsunami that dwarfed anything ever seen by humans. The researchers say an 800-foot wave engulfed an island more than 30 miles away. The study could revive a simmering controversy over whether sudden giant collapses present a realistic hazard today around volcanic islands, or even along more distant continental coasts.

Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme, which means that it breaks down protein into smaller components (peptides and amino acids) that the body can re-use. Derived from the digestive system of the silk worm (which regurgitates serrapeptase to break free from its cocoon) scientists in India first began to research the enzyme to see how it could be used therapeutically in the human body. Get your students excited about science with this hands on unit about habitats! This unit includes full lesson plans and student task cards (with visual supports). It is designed to be used as a 2 week long, centers and project based exploration unit, but can also be used as whole class lessons. Week 1: Monday: Build schema and introduce habitats by completing a habitat book. Tuesday through Thursday: Students go to various science centers to explore different habitats. Students learn about oceans, deserts, savannas, polar regions, forests, and rain forests. Directions, suggestions, and student information cards are included for each station. (Data sheets and/or student books are included with each center.) Friday: Wrap up the week by sorting animals into their natural habitats. Week 2: Students create a habitat diorama or mural and show off their creations with a gallery walk. At the end of the week, students draw an animal out of a hat and decide if their animal could or could not survive in the habitat they created. Students must defend their answers. Centers/activities can also be spread out throughout the week if needed. For more information, please check out the preview button above. Find more seriously awesome STEAM units here.
