What is Community? This year's JK-Sk class spent the first part of the school year exploring the concept of community and all it entails. Community has always been part of our school life. More that just a place to live it is a place of people, voices, shared space, rituals and customs. Coming form the Latin term meaning "with gifts" the term suggests a general sense of humanity, reciprocity and a shared practice of doing good for others that comes from working together for a joint purpose. Communities help generate a shared language, rituals and customs, and a collective memory of those that join the group. www.learnactivity.com/community.htlm If we give credence to the old African proverb that “it takes a village to raise a child” then we can understand the impact that community has in helping us raise our children. Children need more that just supportive parents. As they branch outside the home they require a larger support network to grow into healthy citizens. It is a child’s right to expect the community to provide them safe neighbourhoods, adults who are good role models and dedicated teachers and politicians who keep children's rights at the forefront. When children feel a connectivity to their community they are more apt to develop a sense of civic and social responsibility. They build trust, learn to resolve conflicts peacefully and have a genuine sense of caring for others. Here is a peek at some of the children's work. The entire project is too long to post so we welcome questions. What is community. ~There are lots of houses and tall buildings. ~A community is a place where you walk to. ~There are streets. There are apartments. The Places in Our Community Our Customs and Rituals Community Celebrations Global Responsibility What we bring to the Community

Our latest art project includes aspects of 3 major styles of art. Realism - art that depicts objects/people in a realistic way. Abstract - art that depicts objects/people in a semi-form creation Non-Objective - art that does not depict any form, just design and expression. This fantastic lesson can be found on TPT HERE. We chose an object to depict using all three art forms. The item was segmented into three columns and each art form was used in the different column. Middle = Realism Left = Abstract Right = Non-Objective. As usual, I am blown away by the creatively of my kids. They all have done an incredibly job expressing their creative sides!

This was one of my favorite lessons from last year. (I feel like I always say that....?) But seriously, this was great. It would work for a variety of grades- elementary or high school as well. I did it with 7th grade and will again this year. Using the move-able figures- students had to create a zoomed/close-up composition using the figure, taking the negative space into consideration. I actually had them do a "photo shoot" with their ipads: take photos of the figures in different positions and then cropped the photos. For some students it was easier for them to work from the photo. The students sketched out shaded pencil drawings first. Then they drew them BIG on 12 x 18 slate grey Tru-ray construction paper (one of my favorites, along with their turquoise). They chose a color palette to work in and had to have 3 different shades of oil pastels so that they could convey the shadows. They all came out awesome! And it gave students a chance to strengthen a variety of skills. Some needed to master blending, some needed to strengthen their ability to communicate dimension, etc.

I have accumulated a group of great resources from "Pinterest" that would be great to use as part of the upper level Science class. In my experience, it is very important to include a visual of every standard that is covered and I am so excited that I was able to find them. I also linked each picture with the original poster so that you can go see all of the other great pins that each author has to offer. I know, I know, this is not a foldable but this covers soil erosion so well. I figured we could actually do this experiment and then have them draw it in their journal. This is FABULOUS documentation for my kids because I can open the responses, click ‘CONTROL F’ then search for a students name. I have […]
