HOWARD TERPNING " Sunset for the Comanche " Limited Edition Anniversary Museum CANVAS 250 Signed & Numbered 38" x 48" in size MINT CONDITION DESCRIPTION Artist Howard Terpning’s paintings of the American West have depicted some of the most dramatic and moving events in the history of the Plains People. In “Sunset for the Comanche,” Terpning’s brush recalls the valiant struggle by the Comanche people to retain their land, their freedom and their way of life. The Comanche people ruled the Southern Plains until the last quarter of the 19th Century, relates the artist. Their warriors were said to be some of the best horsemen in the world and yet constant warfare and broken treaties drastically reduced their numbers. The Quohadi (the antelope clan) were the last of the people to surrender. To me, this scene represents the symbol of their strength as they clung to their old way of life as a warrior society. The sun is low on the horizon and the cottonwood trees cast long shadows that forebode the demise of their culture as they know it. HOWARD TERPNING "American Indian history fascinates me. I feel privileged to be one of their storytellers. I think it’s important to tell the story of the Plains Indians because their history is our history . . . part of our heritage. The history of the West is the only history America has that is uniquely our own." Quite simply, Howard Terpning is one of the most lauded painters of Western art. His awards are so numerous and he is honoured with them so often that to list them would require changing the count every few months. To name three would be to cite the highest prizes awarded to Western art: countless awards from the Cowboy Artists of America, the Hubbard Art Award for Excellence, the National Academy of Western Art’s Prix de West and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Gene Autry Museum. Why such praise? Passion, compassion, devotion and respect for his subject matter, extraordinary talent in palette and brushstroke, an exceptional ability to evoke emotion both in his paintings and from those viewing them— all this and more has made Terpning the "Storyteller of the Native American." Born November 5, 1927 in Illinois and educated at the Chicago Academy of Fine Arts and the American Academy of Art, he first gained attention from some powerful Time and Newsweek covers. Film fans praised his movie posters for such classics asThe Sound of Music, Dr. Zhivago and the re-issue of Gone with the Wind. But his love of the West and Native American traditions saw his transition to fine art. Terpning is a long-time member of the Cowboy Artists of America, which has presented him with Gold and Silver awards, "Best of Show" awards, and "Best Overall Show by a Single Artist" awards more than two dozen times. His book,The Art of Howard Terpning won the Wrangler "Outstanding Art Book" award from the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Terpning was recently honoured with a one-man show at the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art in Indianapolis, Indiana featuring 30 of the artist’s most distinguished works where he was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award. This career milestone was further was further celebrated with the publication of Spirit of the Plains People (2001, Greenwich Workshop Press). Terpning is the recipient of the Autry National Center, 2005 Masters of the American West Thomas Moran Memorial Award, given in recognition of exceptional artistic merit for painting. Meols was named as such by the Vikings; its original name from the Old Norse for 'sand dunes' was melr, becoming melas by the time of the Domesday Survey. Impressive archaeological finds dating back to the Neolithic period suggest that the site was an important centre in antiquity. Since about 1810, a large number of artefacts have been found relating to pre-Roman Carthage, the Iron Age, the Roman Empire, Armenia, the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings.[6] These include items as varied as coins which belonged to the Coriosolites in Brittany.

About HOWARD BEHRENS (1933-2014) Often called the "Monet of the 21st Century", Behrens is also a pioneer of the hand-embellished serigraph print. By the early 1980's, his career was really taking off - galleries and exhibition shows from Palm Beach, Florida to 5th Avenue, Manhattan to Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills were featuring Behrens richly textured, distinctive palette-kinfe technique to rave reviews. In light of this success, he began publishing limited edition serigraphs with the added feature of personally had-embellishing each print. It was his ability to work quickly and decisively with his trusty knife that made these creations truly unique, yet available to a much wider fan base of eager collectors. Original Limited Edition Silkscreen on wove paper, 1994. Paper Size: 20.5'' x 25.75.'' Edition Size: 1250. Excellent Condition; never framed or matted.
