I love Bible journaling. I’ve written about it before on this blog, and am also part of a Facebook group where people share their sketches..
I am gearing up for a new CCD year, and planning activities for this years' theme. Last year's theme of "My Soul Magnifies the Lord" was lots of fun, but although Mary is all of our Mother, it definitely felt like some (most) of our decorations and activities were more girl friendly than boy friendly. So, I may be over compensating a little in the opposite direction, but the theme this year is "Put on the Whole Armor of God" and our patron Saint is St. Michael the Archangel. I am planning decorations and ways to incorporate the theme into our year long activities, but I am also working on a Boys' Retreat to go along with the same theme. I'll be sharing some of the games and activities that we use for that event. First up: Draw Your Sword. Every now and then in one of my college Bible Studies, we would play a "lame" game called Draw Your Sword. The idea was to improve memorization of where to find things in the Bible and speed in looking things up. Someone in the group would call out a book, chapter, and verse, and the first to find it and start reading was the winner and would get to call out the next verse. A little friendly competition made it entertaining. The name "Draw Your Sword" comes from Hebrews 4:12- "For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two edged sword." Knowing the Word of God is the best weapon we can arm ourselves with against the world. To make the idea of familiarizing them with the Bible and looking up references a little more fun, I made this game. Starting with an empty small coffee can, I colored and attached the Draw Your Sword printable, (link below). Then buy different colors of plastic knives (swords) and write a Book, Chapter, and Verse on the end of the knife with a Sharpie. (Note- if you are working with really little kids, or kids prone to violence :) I don't recommend plastic knives- those suckers can still hurt. I have a knife-free option below. I went ahead and used knives because I knew that my older students could handle it.) There is a list below of verses, at least one from each book of the Bible, and a lot of them connect to the theme of the Armor of God. Here is the finished jar. Now, arm each kid with a Bible, have one draw out a sword, and race to see who can find it first. The first one to read the verse gets to pull the next sword. I made plenty of swords so they could even be split into cups for use with smaller groups. Click here for a printable label to wrap around a jar or container: Click here for a two page printable with Scripture verses from the entire Bible if you would rather use paper instead of plastic knives. You could cut these out and put them in a jar or envelope for the same kind of game.

I think I have practically told EVERYONE I know about this object lesson! My neighbor used this in YW 2 years ago and it has honestly stuck with me! I was getting it ready for Devin's seminary class and decided to use it on my Relief Society lesson that Sunday and it added SO much to my lesson! So I love sharing things I LOVE! Hopefully, someone will get to use this and it will work as great as it did for me! If you do, let me know! So here goes: 1. Count 1,380 M&M's and put them in a jar. {To save you time: A big bag at Costco has a little over 600 in each bag. About 610. So that means you need 2 Costco bags and then 1 other bag at the store. I also prefer the peanut M&M's. They stand out more.) 2. Ask your class how many people they estimate are in the world today? Tell the class that this jar of M&M's represents THE WORLD. Each M on 1 M&M represents 5 MILLION PEOPLE. There are approximately 6.9 BILLION PEOPLE ON THE EARTH TODAY. 3. Next, ask how many people live in the United States? Tell them that there are approximately 310 million people that live in the United States. That is approximately 62 M&M's. 4. You can narrow it down even more by asking how many people live in Utah? There is approximately 2.7 million people living in Utah. That is approximately 1/2 of M&M. (compared to the whole world) Well, from here, it's your choice. You can use other statistics like these: About 1/8 of the world have NO religion (780 million people; 156 M&Ms) About 1/5 of the world are Muslim (1 billion 235 million; about 247 M&Ms) About 1/8 of the world are Hindus (845 million; 169 M&Ms) About 1/5 the world are made up of miscellaneous relgions (1 billion 365 million; 273 M&Ms) About 1/3 the world is Christian: Believe in a Jesus Christ (2 billion 125 million; 425 M&Ms) So after all of those statistics, HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE MORMONS, MEMBERS OF THE CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST OF LATTER DAY SAINTS? Well as of December 2009, there are 13,824,854 MILLION MEMBERS. Which equals a little less than 3 M&M'S. SHOCKING!! at least for me! You can use this lesson in so many ways: to show the missionary work that still needs to be done the blessings of being one of the 3 M&M's To be in the world, but not of the world... the list goes on! You can also, add or take away from what I put on here! I hope this helps you in some way!

If you are looking for an active, kinaesthetic, way of praying in a small group or even with the whole congregation, then this might be for you! You will need: A collection of buttons of different shapes, sizes and colours- at least one button for each person praying. Give everyone a button. Feel the hardness of the button and think about people who are going through hard times. Ask God to help them. Buttons are used to fasten clothes together. Ask God to bring together people who have fallen out and moved apart from each other. Pray that He will bring peace. Look at your button and see how many holes it has. Think of that number of things you would like to say thank you to God for and say Thank you prayers. Look at the colour of the button and say thank you to God for something that is that colour Find someone who has the same colour button as you. You might want to make a small group of people with the same colour. Say thank you to God for families. Ask God to bless them and help them to live together and to love each other. Find someone who has a different button to you- it could be different in shape, size or colour. Thank God for making everyone different and giving us all different gifts. Pray for the person you have found. Ask Them what they would like God to help them with.
