There's no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to planting grass seed. There are different rules to follow whether you're seeding for the first time or reseeding problem areas of your lawn.
For those of you looking for an alternative to the typical water-hogging green lawn, you must try this Flowering Lawn mix! It's a mixture of drought tolerant dwarf grasses, low-growing flowers, and clover. This lawn alternative eliminates the high-maintenance requirements of a conventional grass lawn while it maintains an attractive, always green, low-growing landscape. It requires no fertilization, infrequent mowing and minimal watering even in the dry season. This mix is very adaptable to a wide range of soil types and growing conditions (with the exception of extremely sandy soil). Once established, it can withstand and adapt to heat, cold, drought, and less than ideal soil. It also stands up well to heavy traffic, as well as dogs and other pets. Best suited for the following geographical areas: NW, California (with the exception of the extreme inland deserts, and beachfront locations where the soil is basically sand), Rocky Mountain Region, Midwest, NE. It can also be grown in the grass 'transition region', which includes North Carolina west to Kansas. The flowering lawn mix looks its best with at least 4 hours of direct sunlight per day, and also does great in dappled light. If it gets less than 4 hours, the flowers do not thrive, and over time the clover begins to dominate the mix. The Flowering Lawn mix specifically includes hard fescue, perennial ryegrass, strawberry clover, white yarrow, baby blue eyes, white alyssum, and english daisy. To maintain Flowering Lawn, a mowing height of 3 - 5 inches is recommended. Mow approx. 1-3 times a month during the growing season to maintain a uniform appearance. It should be watered only 2-3 times a month during the summer. If watered more frequently, the lawn will grow more rapidly and require more mowing. Seeding Rate: 1lb. will cover approx. 800 sq. ft. 1/2 lb. will cover approx. 400 sq. ft. Check out my website www.deckerrdseeds.com for a larger selection of seeds and garden accessories.

Some people see chemicals as a quick & easy fix for lawn problems, but the chemical approach addresses the symptom, not the problem. Instead, go for an organic lawn!

'Karl Foerster' Feather Reed Grass creates a dramatic garden accent, with tall, slender, vertical growth and feathery plumes of shifting bronze color that stay in place year-round. An early bloomer, 'Karl Foerster' is a cool season grass that grows most rapidly in the spring season and produces notably early blooms. It is a clump-forming decorative grass, with an upward architectural growth habit, making it a dramatic specimen plant in garden or meadow. Torch-like plumes are widely used in dried flower arrangements. This sterile variety does not self-sow, is deer resistant, and notably cold hardy. (Calamagrostis acutiflora)

Dichondra is the perfect groundcover for warm climates. It doesn't need to be mowed, it's soft and squishy to play on, can be walked on, and it fills in awkward spaces. Dichondra looks something like dense clover, only greener and softer. It spreads by underground runners but doesn't get carried away. It just fills in where it's needed and looks good. It does best in full sun with deep, occasional watering, but will thrive in the shade, though it will grow taller and lanky. It won't tolerate a freeze, but is permanent in zones 9-11. Keep it fed and weeded in the beginning and it will crowd out weeds ever after. Dichondra is a great filler in container gardens, at the edge of a flower bed, between pavers in walkways. One pack will cover about 25 sq feet. For bigger spaces, find our listing to one pound packs. Growing Directions: Scuffle up bare soil, broadcast the seed evenly, cover with ¼” of soil. Water evenly. No pre-treatment needed for germination. Sow seeds just below soil surface at 70F and water. 500 seeds **All seeds ship for one price! Click here to see more: www.etsy.com/shop/SmartSeeds

Lawn Moss is a dense, low-growing evergreen groundcover plant that can form a green carpet-like appearance in lawns. It often thrives in shaded or damp areas and provides an alternative ground cover to grass. Lawn moss is an alternative to grass that can benefit your property and the wildlife in your area. Like grass, it will cover your yard relatively uniformly; however, unlike grass, it doesn't grow as tall and won't rely on a root system to keep it healthy. Lawn Moss Can Resist Pests The best reason to use this type of product is that it is highly resistant to most pests. Therefore, in addition to protecting your lawn, you can also protect your home, as whatever is attacking your yard won't feel compelled to enter your house in search of shelter eventually. The lack of pests also means you won't need to put down pesticides or other harsh chemicals that might hurt your pets or children if ingested. Grass can irritate your skin or become too brittle to walk on if it gets too hot or dry. However, this product will create a soft layer to walk on whether you want to venture through the yard with shoes or bare feet. A soft ground cover may also be better for your pets, and this may be especially true as they get older and it gets harder to walk comfortably. The Moss Minimizes Erosion Yards covered with this substance instead of grass are less susceptible to erosion. Therefore, it can be ideal if your yard is on a slope or tends to get wet at any point during the year. As this natural resource tends to need water, it can help to provide a balance that will prevent soil from being washed away. Lawn Moss Won't Get Taller Than 4 Inches Another benefit to Lawn Moss is that you won't need to mow as it rarely grows above four inches. You would only need to mow if you prefer concise growth or want to tame any edges that might be unruly. However, as it grows slowly, you should only need to bring the mower out sometimes.

Festuca arundinacea. Turf type. Tall Fescue stands up to traffic, drought, cold, shade, pets, and mowing. It is far tougher than conventional lawn grasses like Kentucky blue grass, but it still makes a lush green lawn. It is commonly used by municipalities for planting recreation fields and school grounds. Use Tall Fescue to overseed existing lawn at a rate of 1.8kg (4 lbs) per thousand square feet. Better yet, seed a new area, with no turf present, at 3.6kg (8 lbs) of seed per thousand square feet. This fescue is a tough perennial. Officially, it is hardy to Zone 4, but a sudden onset of very cold weather can interfere with its dormancy, causing winterkill. Sow in the spring or fall (fall is recommended) at a depth of 5-10mm (¼-½”). Because this product does not produce thatch, it is not attractive to the chafer beetle. Fescue can be mixed with wildflower blends or Micro-Clover to cover in an area densely and quickly. It still requires mowing approximately every two weeks in the growing season. Fescue is also a major component of our Chafer Beetle Resistant Lawn Blend.
This is a branded, inoculated, Nitro-Coated clover seed sold by Outsidepride. Please ensure your clover seed comes from Outsidepride or you are not buying Outsidepride seed. Nitro-Coat rhizobium strains are specifically chosen for each seed type. A key to any successful establishment and early seed development is moisture. NITRO-COAT® is naturally water absorbent and helps attract soil moisture to the seed, getting your stand established quickly. This coating process which Outsidepride utilizes, assures that only the top-performing and crop-specific rhizobia will be applied to ensure your clovers reach maximum nodulation, stand establishment, and yield potential. The weight of the clover seeds will contain approximately 34% coating material that contains the inoculant and water holding material for better establishment and viability of the seed. There is no difference in the seeding rates between the coated and raw seed due to the increased germination and viability of the bulk clover seeds that are coated and inoculated. Red Clover, or Trifolium pratense, is considered to be the most popular and widely grown clover. It tolerates a wide range of climates and soil conditions; however, it does best where it can receive rainfall or irrigation during the growing season. It is grown over much of the temperate areas of the United States. In the southern United States, Red Clover is used as a winter annual. It is often used in a crop rotation program because it is easy to establish and it fixates nitrogen into the soil. It can be planted alone or in mixtures of grass for hay and silage. Red Clover is recognized by the rose-pink oval flower heads. It is extremely attractive to insects and bumble bees are the main pollinator. Plant Red Clover in late winter or early spring when rains can help the seed to germinate and establish well.
Blue Fescue (Festuca cinerea glauca Varna) - Create low-growing clumps with Blue Fescue seed. These ornamental grasses are excellent for the front of the border, and the blue-green color complements colorful ornamentals. Blue Fescue has traditionally been viewed only as a clumping ornamental grass with a few plants spaced in a landscape bed, but Blue Fescue grass also mixes well with wildflowers and does not crowd them out. A low maintenance ground cover can be created by using Blue Fescue ornamental grass seed. The waxy leaf covering reduces transpiration so the Blue Fescue plant can survive extended droughts and the stress of a drought only deepens the color of the ornamental grass. Blue Fescue is one of the shortest ornamental grasses available, with the foliage not exceeding 12 inches (30cm) in height, so mowing is only needed to remove seed heads if desired. It has good winter color and looks green during this period. Blue Fescues are very shade tolerant, often found in the dry shade of trees. Blue Fescue plant care includes cutting the plant back to 2 inches (5cm) in the early spring. Trim flower heads to prevent self-sowing. This ornamental grass seems to prefer some neglect. Sowing instruction. Season: Perennial Height: 10 inches (30cm) Width: 8 inches (25cm) Foliage Color: Grey-blue Flower Color: Grey-blue Growth Rate: Moderate Fall Color: No change Soil Requirement: Average to dry soils, pH 5.8 - 6.8 Environment: Full sun Moisture Requirements: Average to Temperature: 68F (20C) Average Germ Time: 2 - 3 weeks Light Required: Yes Depth: Do not cover the seeds, but tightly press into the earth Sowing Rate: 3 seeds per plant Moisture: Keep seeds moist until germination Plant Spacing: 12 inches (35cm) How To Grow Blue Fescue Ornamental Grass From Seeds: Blue Fescue seeds can be started either indoors in late winter or directly outside once frost danger has passed. For indoor sowing, use small peat pots or containers, fill with seed starting mix, and press 3 ornamental grass seeds into the soil. Lightly cover the grass seeds and keep them moist until germination. For outdoors sowing, weed and loosen the soil and add a generous amount of seed starting mix to the soil. Space the Blue Fescue grass seeds about 12 inches (30cm) apart. Once seedlings are about 4 inches (10cm) in height, bunch the leaves together and trim off 1/2 inch (1cm) or so. Trimming encourages greater root development and a uniform look. The seedlings will appear green with the blue being added to the grass as the plant matures.
This gracefully arcing perennial prefers part to full shade, and does not have a flower but produces a small berry that appears on a little stalk. Mondo Grass can handle anywhere from part to full shade, and could even be put inside in terrariums or as a houseplant in low light conditions. Mondo Grass can be cut like a regular lawn but holds its shape and structure with little to no care. The arching leaves look beautiful as a border or edging, and can be effectively used as a groundcover.
The road to a beautiful lawn doesn’t have to be paved with a schedule of chemical treatments. There are several homegrown tips and techniques you can use to help your grass to grow lush and green this summer.
