1888 Queen Anne Victorian Bair House in Arcata, California
Located on 2nd Street and M and across the street from the Carson Mansion in Eureka is this Classic Queen Anne Eastlake style Victorian home known as "The Pink Lady". Designed by the famed San Francisco Newsom Brothers and architects of the Carson Mansion, the Pink Lady was built in 1889 by William Carson as a wedding gift to his son J. Milton Carson. During the 1940's the property left the Carson family and became a boarding house and eventually fell into disrepair. In 1963 the property was purchased by Robert Madsen, a local real estate broker and former city councilman and mayor of Eureka. It was immediately restored to its former glory and has been looked after and maintained by the Madsen family ever since. During the restorations in 1963-1964, a decision to paint the mansion bright pink was made in order to contrast its color with the dark color of the Carson Mansion. I much preferred this smaller pink mansion with its domed turret to the large and ostentatious Carson Mansion. While both are exquisite and beautiful, the Pink Lady seems a bit more unpretentious and homey! The mansion is a private residence and tours are not available. I shot these images near sunset and like the way the golden light makes the pink glow!

The sometimes "anything goes" Queen Anne style was the last of the Victorian styles and was loosely based on Elizabethan Revival prototypes by English Architect Richard Norman Shaw. The origins of the Queen Anne name for the style are obscure; I think it could just as well have been called the "Queen Victoria" style but that's a moot point now. Queen Annes first appeared Stateside in the late 1870's and during the 1880's reached a peak of originality and creativeness. By the mid-1890's more formal versions of the Queen Anne appeared with Neo-Classical, Georgian Revival, and Colonial Revival decorative details. By 1900, the inventive designs of the 1880's were replaced with simpler and predictable details with less "drama" before the style disappeared altogether just before World War I. Happily, this fantastic example belongs to the earlier creative, artistic versions of the Queen Anne. I could sit for hours slowly taking in all the rich details-this is one of my all-time Victorian favorites.

While in Eureka Springs Arkansas last summer we took a tour of a great restored Queen Anne style house. I found some great photos on a photographers website. These will be another great resource for my Victorian house. This historic Queen Anne Mansion was originally built in Carthage, Missouri. A century later workers dismantled it, board-by-board and stone-by-stone, marked each piece and put it back together on hill overlooking Eureka Springs. Around the side, the area that used to be the screen porch, now houses a pretty great stair case down to the basement. The front parlor is ornately furnished. Almost every room in the house has a different fireplace. The round or oriel window in the front parlor is very beautiful. I would like to somehow incorporate this in one of my projects. For the most part, the furniture was the focal point of most of the rooms. There was not a lot of wallpaper used in the restoration. The tour guide explained that the amount of carving and woodwork in the entryway showed a family's wealth and status. As you can see from the picture and inset, the entrance hall was very ornate. This picture shows how they decorate part of the house for Christmas - pretty ornate by today's standards, but not how it would have been done back in the 1800's
