During our study of contractions, my students performed Word Surgery. First we dressed the part with our masks and gloves. They gathered tools such as scalpel (scissors), stitches (tape), and bandages (Band-Aids). Each team assisted each other during surgery. They cut off the letters they didn't need and bandaged them back together with Band-Aids and tape. I wanted them to always remember how to form a contraction. They had a lot of fun doing it. They were very excited to take home their surgery gear. I even overhead one of my students saying they were going to make their own word cards and try it again at home!

Technology is wonderful. I can't imagine homeschooling without it. We have a world of information at our fingertips at all times, resources for every type of learner, and access to expert advice any time we need it. One technological resource that we use in our homeschool is YouTube. When the kids want to learn how to do something, we search for it on YouTube. There is literally a video to do anything from drawing a unicorn to rebuilding engines. My children aren't much for spending the day in a museum, attending events at opera houses, or the ballet. And, we will never get to visit places like the L'ouvre. However, through the wonder of YouTube, we can see art, listen to symphonies, and watch a ballet all while cuddled up on the couch. The kids will do that. Here are 10 great YouTube channels that will bring the arts into your living room and help your kids appreciate them. I am sorry to write and tell you all that for the next couple of months, I will be taking a break from my blog. On May 12th, my son was diagnosed with ALL (Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia). Some of you may remember, he is a police officer and each year he comes to my school each year during our Community Helper week. He also recently got married. So, for the next couple of months, all of my time and energy will be spent helping Jay and his precious wife, Brooklyn, with his fight. If you would like to keep up with his progress, there is a Facebook page and a Caring Bridge site set up for him. One of Brooklyn's dear, dear friends has even set up a fund raiser for him to help with their expenses. But all I ask is that you remember him in your prayers. Thank you ALL and I will be back soon. - Karen
