Spring is definitely my favorite time of year to teach Science! There are just so many hands-on concepts that are so interesting to the students. Plants, of course, is always so interesting because they are something the kids can see all around them and they all have some kind of experience with. First up, here are some of our centers we have going on during our study of plants. This first one is the same green mat as the one below, just with different sorting objects. This is our Spring Sensory Tub. So far, it contains flowers, pots, rubber bugs, and bug cards that the students can match with the rubber bugs. This seed matching center is one of my favorite Science centers. Each large card contains an empty seed packet and some seeds. The students find the small card with the same seeds and matches it to the large card. One of the student's favorite activities was going on a nature hunt and then using what they found to create their own nature collages. And of course, no study on plants would be complete without planting our own beans! We planted pinto and lima. (The clear cups make it easy to see how the roots grow!) Want to completely amaze your Kinders?! Just change white carnations into colored carnations with food coloring and water! At the end of our unit on plants, I split the students into five groups and they made posters to present to the class about what they learned. Watching them work together and figure it all out on their own is always my favorite part of group projects. I wrote the title for each group on a piece of paper, but the students did all the planning, writing and drawing on their own. "How to Plant a Seed" "Plant Needs" "What We Know About Plants" "Types of Plants" "Parts of a Plant" Update: I have created a Living & Nonliving Mini Unit to continue our study of living and nonliving things. You can see it on Teachers Pay Teachers, here. Or you can read about it on my newest blog post, here.

I'm finding myself thinking once again about motivation. It's never really very far from a teacher's mind. "How can I motivate my kids to...?" Several years ago I came across a homework activity called "Math About Me." It seemed like a great idea. I wanted my mathematicians to know that math surrounds them but more importantly that math is all about them and their own lives. Six-year olds tend to want to learn about things that are about them. Don't we all? I'm 40, and it's still true for me 34 years later. I've tweaked the activity a few times over the years from its original state, but I still send it home and ask kids to fill it out and return it to school. What do I do with it? Grade it? Slap a sticker on it and send it back home? Nope. Well, isn't it obvious? We've got ourselves another classroom book to make. Check it out. (Click on the picture for your own copy.)

Howdy! I'm officially on spring break and it came at the perfect time. Here in good ol' Kansas this week we will be having highs in the 70's...pefect flip-flop weather! Winning!!!! So...this afternoon I have to trudge down to my basement and find all my spring and summer clothes and so the switching out of the winner clothes begins. :) We are getting ready to begin a unit on shapes which is why I made this book for my kiddos to work on during math workshop. The shapes included in the book are a cone, cube, sphere, cylinder, rectangular prism, and pryamid. They cut out the shapes and paste them on the correct page. Then they write a sentence about the shape. This file is for sale in my TpT shop for here. These are super easy and fast to make. I copy the pages front-to-back and set the copier to staple twice on the left side. Then I can cut them in half with the paper cutter and the booklets will already be stapled and put together! This book goes perfectly with my 3-D Shapes Poster Pack...check it out here! I left my jump drive at school, but luckily its open all week so I'm going to swing by tomorrow and get it so I can share a freebie with you all tomorrow! It's a worksheet to review edges, faces, and vertices of 3-D shapes. \
