Contractions are great for writing words shorter to save some time. But there is some confusion when students shorten the words. Contract means to make smaller. Students contract two words into one small word. This is what students need to remember about contractions: The first words always stays the same (except for the word; will not, won't). The apostrophe goes where the letters come out. I have a Free Contractions Bingo game to practice reading and writing contractions. This 2-Player game has students matching the two words that make a contraction to the contraction word on their bingo board. The first player to make a bingo is the winner! All you need to play are the Bingo Boards and Contraction Cards. Click the picture for your free download! Place the Contractions Bingo Game in you center rotations or use during small group time. Play after teaching or reviewing contractions. Feel free to send home for homework to play with a family member. Place the Contraction Cards and some writing paper at a Writing Center. Students use the cards to write sentences using the contraction word. Check students for understanding. It helps to remember the first word stays the same and the apostrophe replaces the letters that come out. The only time this rule doesn't apply is for the contraction word, will not - won't. Try this pack of Contraction Task Cards. It includes 3 centers. The first center has 40 task cards that students choose from multiple choice answers to find the correct contraction. The second center has 36 task cards. Each task card has a contraction. The students write the two words that make up the contraction. The third center has 36 task cards. Each task card the two words that make up the contraction. Students write the contraction that make up the the two words. This pack will keep your students sharp on reading and writing contractions all year long. Here are some resources you may need when teaching contractions. I have had a lot of great responses asking about notebooking, cycle 1. I am so very very excited about this year! And to answer the big question. Yes, I am making a Cycle 1 notebook. I am doing this in little tiny spurts this year though. A lot has changed since I made the notebook last year. I am also holding down a part-full time job, schooling through the summer, and trying to expand our business. My worksheet making is taking the back burner even though I wish I could make that my full time job :) This year our Cycle 1 notebook will be grouped into 9 books. Instead of having it broken by week, I will have it broken by subject. It makes most sense to me. I am not sure if I will make a broken by week file(I probably wont have time) but I have thought about it. There will be a separate file with all memory work pages just like I had in the book last year. I wish there was a program that could make editable pdfs, where people could delete the pages they don't want and just press print. (Is there a program like that?) I still haven't found a way to do that. This is the way that works best for us. I have finished the HISTORY sentence portion. I am SOO excited for the choices I have for history. There are thirteen different choices for a history page to add to your child's notebook. You can choose whatever works best. I have a young one who will be doing the coloring page, rainbow writing, and tracing each week, one who will do the dashed copywork cursive and cutting paste, one who will be doing the fill in the blanks and writing with drawing space each week. This is why I have made pages to choose, rather than a notebook to print and go. Here are the examples of pages for History Sentences for Cycle 1. They should be up in a couple weeks after I have a few proof readers go over them :) I have a contents page for helping with printing this time!! :) I will have a cover for each subject, and weekly covers in the "memory work" file Coloring page And this is just History! Wait until you see what I have for Geography :) I am excited, and really enjoying Cycle 1 before it even starts. I have been asked a lot about my notebook being available for non c3 subscribers, and unfortunately I don't think there is a way to do it without infringing on copy right laws. The memory work that is available in the notebook is proprietary and owned by CC so for me to offer it to those who don't pay the subscription would be against the law. I understand that the subscription can be a high cost to those who aren't in a community, but unless I can figure out a way to not infringe on the copy rights, for now the notebook will be available on CC connect only. I will post on the blog when I finally upload. I will most likely be uploading one subject at a time. One more thing! My computer is dying. Slowly and surely it is dying. The hinges are broken, and the wires are shorting out, sometimes the dang thing doesn't even turn on. I was asked a while back if there was a way for some people who enjoyed my notebook to give back and I didn't have an answer back then-but I do now. I truly truly need a new laptop to continue on this venture so if you are willing I would be so grateful for any help I can get! Thank you all :)

Visit My New Blog www.literacyandmathideas.com STEM and the Next Generation Science Standards are designed to foster a love as well as knowledge about mathematics and science. This project brings circuits directly to students' notebooks. One of my newest loves and discoveries is aluminum tape. Where has this been all of my life? I purchased it for a little under $8 from my local hardware store. It is found in the plumbing and/or tubing section of the store. One roll of aluminum tape is enough to last for an entire school year. I also purchased these round batteries at the hardware store. The LED lights can be purchased at an electronics store. STEP 1: To create a paper circuit, have students draw a pattern on paper. On one side I drew the picture of a battery. On the other side I drew a picture of an LED light. STEP 2: Cut the aluminum tape into thirds. I used only a third of the width of tape. If you are unable to find aluminum tape, aluminum will work just fine. (A larger width decreases the flow of energy in the circuit.) STEP 3: Place the aluminum on top of your circuit lines in the notebook. Special Notes During This Step: 1.Do not let both sides of the aluminum strips connect. This can cause a short in the battery. The edges on my example come close, but they do not touch. 2.When you are attaching the aluminum foil to the paper, do not cut it. Instead, fold the corner and continue to apply the aluminum strip. Cutting the strips reduces the flow of energy. STEP 4: (Warning, this part gets tricky. If your circuit does not work, switch the sides of the circuit that both metal prongs touch. And/or switch the overlapping of the aluminum in the circuit. One piece of aluminum should touch the top battery. The second piece of aluminum should touch the bottom battery.) STEP 4 Continued... Stack the batteries. Place the batteries over the battery drawing, and place the LED light over the LED drawing. STEP 5: You are all finished. I had fold extra pieces of aluminum tape to connect each side of the battery to the circuit. The sticky tape interfered with the conduction. (I made sure that when I attached this extra aluminum, both sides of the circuit DID NOT connect as I was attaching the aluminum to the top of the batteries. You might have to press the batteries down to hold it in place. Remove the batteries and LED light when you are finished so that they can be used in another project. I love this because students learn about circuits and conductivity from doing and not just reading about it in a book.
