14 Brilliant Ways to Quiet a Noisy Class! Check out these behavior management strategies for classroom management!
In the 18 years I’ve been teaching, I’ve tried all sorts of behavior management systems. I’ve had the kids pull cards. I’ve tried the marbles in a jar. One year I even gave my students tickets for good behavior and excellent participation. Another year, I awarded table points. I’ve even used an economy system where my kiddos earned money and then spent it all in a class store buying trinkets. I was always looking for that PERFECT SYSTEM! The one that would work like a charm with every single child. After years of research in my own classroom, you know what I finally discovered? I’ve finally realized that THE PERFECT CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT SYSTEM DOES NOT EXIST!!!!! What works one year and with one group of students, might not work the following. Another thing I’ve learned is that you need to find a system that WORKS.FOR.YOU. If you don’t have much time left at the end of the week to run a class store, then do it! Be honest with yourself and how much time you’re willing to invest. It’s important to choose a system that fits with your teaching style and with the needs of your students. […]
These printable daily behavior logs are great for middle school special education! Use these logs to support behavior intervention plans, communication between home and school, for behavior documentation, and/or as a self-management tool. An editable PowerPoint version is included for your convenience! Included: Printable PDF Editable PowerPoint Daily charts for a self-contained class for up to 4 behaviors Daily charts for up to 7 classes for up to 3 behaviors Example of a filled out log How-to with tips and suggestions for use Troubleshooting guide with helpful ideas for common challenges ABOUT: Printabe PDF Editable PPT included Parent/Guardian signature lines for home/school communication Give students a visual reminder of expectations Provide useful documentation for IEPs Support Positive Behavior Intervention Plans Gather helpful feedback from other teachers (if applicable) Help identify patterns of behavior (settings, time of day, subjects, etc) Tips/Suggestions for Use: Be specific about which behaviors you are focusing on. It is best to focus on only 2 or 3 behaviors at a time. For some students, working on 1 behavior at a time may be most appropriate. State the behaviors in a way that tells your student what you want them to do. For example, use appropriate language, raise their hand to speak, etc. Explain to your student how the log works and explain the specific behavior expectations that you are targeting. Explain that you will be sending this home for a parent/guardian signature each day and that they are expected to return it to you daily. Communicate with parent/guardian about the log so that they know to sign and return the log. Communicate with any other team members who will be documenting behaviors on the log, such as other teachers. Keep enough copies of the charts on hand in an accessible area. It can help to keep the logs in a folder. Consider stapling the logs together at the end of each week and keeping them in your student’s file. The charts can come in handy at Parent Teacher Conferences, IEP meetings, etc.

I met a HUGE summer goal yesterday and entered all of my Professional Development hours online! I'm not sure what the requirements are for other states, but to renew our license, Indiana teachers are required to submit the number of hours, a brief description, and scanned documentation for each professional event on the "LVIS" site. Thanks to my principal, the organized person she is, she suggested we keep a log of hours/meetings we attend throughout the school year. It wasn't fun entering all of those hours, but it sure was a lot easier with everything already documented! I recreated my PD Log for next year. Feel free to download the form below if you could find it useful! Free Fuzzy Bump Border from Frog Spot graphics On another note, I wanted to share a few of my fun purchases! I have always wanted a microphone/speaker system of some sort for my classroom. The possibilities for its use are endless (i.e. sharing Star of the Week, reading, presentations, etc.). I also think it could be a really good motivator. I did a little searching online last year, but couldn't find anything wireless or affordable. Well, I found a system on Amazon last week for only $70! Since it was so inexpensive, I was a little worried about the quality, but it came in yesterday and works perfectly! I'm so excited to use this in my classroom next year!! Here's the one I bought: I sure hope it lasts......yikes... Also....did you know that Skippyjon Jones is at Kohl's!?? It's a $5 Kohl's Cares item by the checkout lane! They have books, too! If you love Skippyjon, you better make a trip soon! :)

How many different management systems have we all tried in our rooms? Over the past 18 years I've lost count for myself. As my philosophy and pedagogy have continually shifted, so has management. I so love what I've been doing the past several years though. Sure, it may change in the future, but it feels like home right now. Over the years I've gradually gone from 5 to 3 to 1 rule. It's all Love and Logic's fault that I'm down to one and only one, but I'm not sure I need others when one covers all the bases. Then combine my one rule with Debbie Diller's document system from Literacy Work Stations. Each child's name is written on an index card that's attached to a clipboard. I make notes throughout the day concerning behavior that are later transferred to this clipboard for safe keeping. It's pretty slick to keep all my notes in one place that can easily go home and back again. The privacy factor is probably my favorite part of the whole deal. There are no public records kept of the wrongs of others. Yep, it feels like home and hopefully feels like home to my kids too.
This is a note I send home if my students are misbehaving. The middle portion of the file (the note to the parents and the behaviors) are editable. ...

Whew!! The first day has come and gone...actually, the first TWO...we went back on Wednesday - which I actually like because it gives us three "get to know you" days.... BUT, we have been SUPER busy!! Let me show you what we've been up to.... I know..I know...I haven't shown you classroom pix yet - but that's a long post, so I am going to do that one this weekend for you... Anyway... Here's what we did the first day... Since my room is beach themed, I thought, what better "community" activity than to do it with a beach ball?? So we tossed the ball to each other and everyone had to say, "Hi, my name is....and my favorite thing we did this summer was..." and then they wrote their name on the ball. And we hung it from the ceiling - right dab SMACK in the middle. THEN, we did our time capsule... They turned out super cute! (sorry for the wonky pics...I've tried it THREE times -grrr) I just took what I've been doing for years and made them cuter - you know, since I'm addicted to clip art - hehe.. Then, I measured them with a piece of yarn... (yes, I've already gotten permission to post pics of my students from my parents - that goes home in the first day packet) and used that piece of yarn to hold the papers together - and wrote their name on the outside - and I "buried" them (in a drawer) until the end of the year. You can grab them on {THIS} post! AND we've done Reagan's quilt! Yes...there are some missing ones...slackers - haha! AND we've done the glyph I made to go with Corinna's surfer kids she posted. Click {HERE} for her surfer.... and {HERE} for the glyph I made to go with it. My centers are all set for next week... In the Math tubs, I have my School Days centers and some of Reagan's Back to School Math Centers (again...wonky pictures - sorry!) And in my Literacy buckets, I have my School Days Literacy centers.... OH! Forgot to share another form we use in the beginning of the year that I made cuter :) My friend shared this with me years ago and I love having it... It's our parent survey - I keep this in my communication binder in those plastic sleeves...and then keep all the notes they give me behind this paper in the sleeve....and the log form hole punched behind the sleeve. Click {HERE} to get a copy of the survey. And last, but not least... LOOK what the hubs gave me the first day :D He's a firefighter - so they are PERFECT - LOVE THEM!! Hope y'all had/have a great first couple of days! Let me know if you find my freebies useful =) Love hearing from you! Feel free to pin too!
