Heaven is a very abstract concept for children to understand. We don't even fully comprehend it as adults! However, Jesus does give us some very clear and beautiful descriptions about our hope of eternity with Him. In this lesson, I try to make heaven as tangible and real as possible. I also emphasize to my little preschoolers that the best part about heaven is that we will finally be able to really see Jesus and be with Him forever! Bible Truth: I have a forever home in Heaven. Bible Story: Jesus went back to Heaven to prepare a home for us. Bible Study: John 14:1-6; Acts 1:9-11; I Thessalonians 4:15-17; Revelation 21:22-27 teach I like using our flannel graph set to visually show Jesus ascending up into heaven as I tell this story. Then I use a gold gift bag that I call my "Heaven Bag" to describe the kind of home that the Bible says Jesus is preparing for us. Below is a list of items that I have in the bag. I pull each item out one by one, and talk about whether or not we will have and/or need it in heaven. If it will be in heaven I keep it in the gold bag. If not, I throw it into a trash bag, which I usually ask one of the children to hold for me. Items to represent what will be in heaven include: gold (coins or jewelry) crown jewels small musical instrument (worship) piece of fruit (we will have a feast in heaven) picture of Jesus (the best part about heaven is we will see Jesus!) Items that will not be in heaven include: band-aids medicine flashlight tissues (to wipe tears) black heart (sin) sing Heaven is a Happy Place - I have colored various pictures from coloring books to illustrate each verse of this song. You could also hold up objects from the lesson above that correspond with each verse of this song. Follow the link for the tune and lyrics. craft up in a cloud This craft helps the children remember, and retell the story of Jesus' ascension. You will need: these print outs (I suggest printing the first page on card stock for stability and ease of operation.) scissors tape yarn hole-punch cotton balls glue crayons To prepare, cut out the large clouds, and pictures of Jesus for each child. Punch a hole in the center top and bottom of the activity page, and thread a piece of yarn (approximately 20 inches long) through each hole. Tie off the ends of the yarn in the back near to the top hole. Tape Jesus to the piece of yarn. In class, children can color their page and glue cotton balls the clouds. Help them put glue on the opposite ends of the large cloud, and attach it to their pages in a way that allows for Jesus to easily be pulled up behind it. Children pull the string in the back to move Jesus from standing on the ground with His disciples, to ascend up to heaven in a cloud. 'h' is for heaven This is simple, low prep craft. Print this activity sheet onto cloud stationery paper. I purchased mine from Wal-Mart. Give the children small cotton balls, or pull larger cotton balls apart, to glue onto the letter 'H'. a beautiful home Another simple craft is to provide children with craft jewels and sequins to decorate a picture like this. This year for preschool we are part of a co-op preschool group. I put together name recognition activities for all the kids in the preschool. Here are the activities. Name sticks To make this activity. I got paint stick stirrers and used Mod Podge to glue the letters of the child's name on to the stick. Then used mounting tape to stick the letters onto the clothespins. Your child matches up the letters to spell their name. Name Block Matching This can be made in any word document or you could make make it easily be hand. Name Puzzles Here are free puzzles patterns for 4, 5, 6, and 7 letters names. You can either hand write your child's name or open in a word document to add your child's name Just right click on the each image, save and print. I recommend printing on cardstock paper so it is more durable 4 letter name 5 letter name 6 letter name 7 letter name Name Tracing You can download free front from this website to make these tracing cards in a word document. The font is called ABC Print Dotted. This is laminated and so it can be used over and over again. Name Path For this activity, you can use any word document and create a table. Then can choose what letters you want to use and what path to create to spell your child's name. This is also laminated so it is reusable. Progressive Name Tracing This idea is also part of the Preschool learning binder I put together. I download free front from this website to make this in a word documents. The names of the fonts are ABC Print Arrow, ABC Print Arrow Dotted, and ABC Print Dotted. All of these activities are stored in a laminated 9 x 12 folder. I used an X-acto knife to cut a slip in the top. I like this folder idea because it keeps things together and can be passed around easily to each home when it it our turn to teach preschool.
The end of the year or summer is the perfect time to learn about ocean animals, since kids already have their minds on being outdoors and water play. These fun ocean creatures are a lot of fun to make and will get your students minds thinking about what lives in the ocean. Do you get stressed trying to squeeze in all the curriculum you need to cover? This is Deanna from A Primary Owl and believe me this is my daily struggle! I teach third grade and the amount of Social Studies and Science topics we have to cover is crazy....plus we take District Assessments over all these topics so nothing can be skipped or else my students will bomb the tests. One of my go-to strategies is one that has been around a long time, it's one of those oldies but goodies. So when I am crunched for time, I have my students JIGSAW the topics and let THEM be the experts. They love this part, I tell them they are going to be the teachers. Third graders just eat that up:) STEP ONE: Here is a great website that can give you the break down of all the steps but the first thing I decide is how I want to break apart the material being studied. Often for me, it is a chapter in a textbook. For example, right now we are studying the Habitats of Georgia so I divided the groups into the different regions. STEP TWO: Then decide how many students will need to be in each group. I let my students pick the group they want to be in but you can also assign groups. Then give the groups their guidelines on how they are going to study and present the material. This is where large chart paper comes in handy! I almost always have my groups make a chart. STEP THREE: After each group has time to study the material and decide how to "teach" it, it is time to do the presenting. The idea is that you take one expert from each group and form the JIGSAW groups, where each person presents their material to a small group. Sometimes, I have the groups present to the class as a whole (depending on the subject matter and how many groups I have). STEP FOUR: One important step, is to make sure you have a way for students to demonstrate what they learned from each group. You may want them to take notes as each person presents, or have a short formative assessment. FREEBIE: This strategy works so well and students love it. They enjoy learning from their peers and I love being able to cover topics in an efficient way. We have been doing some fascinating activities for our Medieval History unit, (Viking Runes, Medieval Illuminations, and our own homemade Medieval Subtleties) but this craft or "craftivity" turned out the most beautiful of all. We created our own stained glass windows! This is an easy activity, especially if you purchase our premade Medieval Window packet which includes 4 possible designs for your students to choose from to make their window. You will also need a transparency sheet (or some recycled flat plastic), a sharpie, food coloring and glue. And some Q-tips. Because we always fall back on Q-tips as an easy go-to paintbrush for these kinds of activities. After drawing the designs on the transparencies with black sharpies, we cut out our window shapes. And we began to fill in the window shapes with our glue paint. To make it easier, we cut out our paper design and taped it, along with the transparency to the table. It kept our image stable while the kids filled in the colors. After the colored glue had dried, we cut out our window edging and glued it over the glass. An optional idea is to go over the top of the sharpie with black puffy paint. This raised black edging makes the stained glass really pop. It feels just like the leaded glass stained windows you might see in an old church or heraldic window. The finished product is tacked to the window so that the light can stream through, just like it streamed through Medieval stained glass windows, many years ago. A beautiful finished product!
