Recently my son got interested in astronomy :) Even though he's only almost four, he enjoys watching documentary movies on astronomy, knows the names of all the planets, what a solar eclipse is and much more... That's why we came up with the idea of making a toy telescope. Here's how you can do this: You will need a lot, but really a lot (15) of toilet paper tubes, an adhesive tape, glue, scissors, nice wrapping paper, images of different planets, stars or constellations (stickers, cut-outs or drawings), and... a bit of free time. Join 5 tubes into one long tube using the adhesive tape — that will be the telescope tube. Now make the three legs of a tripod — each one out of three tubes, — by joining them with the tape. Attach the telescope to the tripod, then cut the bottom of the legs at an angle, so that they can stand steadily on a flat surface. Finally, wrap the telescope nicely in wrapping paper. Now you have to decide what you'd like to see and make interchangeable caps with different pictures. Well, let's make the caps. Make a lengthwise cut in a toilet paper tube, and then cut the tube into 4 or 5 rings. For each ring separate the edges of the lengthwise cut to create a gap of about 1 cm (3/8 inch) and secure with the adhesive tape. Now the ring should fit the front of the telescope tube. Prepare a paper circle that is approx. 2 cm (3/16 inch) wider than the ring in diameter. Glue an image onto the circle, put the ring onto it, then fold edges of the circle up and glue them to the ring. Make several interchangeable caps using the same method. You're set to play :)

Update: I have received many emails and comments asking about a pattern, it's posted in a few places around the blog, but I thought I'd add it to the top of this post too to make it easier to find. I followed Simplicity 3709 for these busy books, with very slight deviations. The Shop's first official order was shipped out yesterday. This book is going to a little girl named Eleanor for her first birthday. Super cute name, right? Her aunt ordered it for her and asked for a rainbow of colors with graphic prints and a bit of a vintage vibe. I hope she likes it as much as I do because I fell in the love with the colors and fabrics while making the book. I'll admit, I might even be a little jealous that this isn't Audrey's book. It was pretty fun to get to package the book up and ship it off. The first order just seems a bit special. Oh, and if you're wondering why the shop is currently empty, it's because I'm up to my ears in orders right now. As soon as I get this batch of books finished and shipped I will add more listings. I'm so thankful for all the support and enthusiasm I've gotten about selling the books. When I listed the first one I didn't know what would come of it, but to have all the listings sell out in just a couple weeks time blew me away. So thanks!
