So it appears that COVID-19 is here for a while and many schools are canceling and they are asking for students to participate in eLearning or distance learning activities. This definitely presents a unique challenge for all teachers (and families), and especially special education teachers who are wondering how in the world am I going to do that? Here's a few ideas, including some FREE (and some paid) resources. Give Suggested Learning Activities: Make a BINGO board with suggested activities for parents and students to complete together. I love this Homework Choice board that Taylor, a member of our Breezy Special Ed facebook group, made for home learning days. She was so nice to share her template if you are looking for something similar! CLICK HERE, then choose "make a copy" and you should be able to edit your copy. On a bingo board / list like this you can come up with functional, real things that students can do at home that they might not otherwise get the chance to do! It will also help give parents some ideas and strategies to pass the time. Send Home Packets: I know many teachers are scrambling to print at home packets. Let me help! I picked out a few 2 week resources in my store that I think would be great to use as home packets. Head over to my TpT store to get these zoo themed writing, math, and reading activities for FREE through the rest of this 2019-2020 school year. (The regular price of these combined resources is $14.) There's so much talk about the virus on the media and no reason for our students to feel nervous because that doesn't help anything! I wrote some social stories (available with or without symbols) to help your students know: what COVID-19 is how to prevent what might happen if schools close All in a non-threatening, not scary way. On top of the sensory experience, this playdough imprinting activity also encourages development of fine motor skills, language skills, processes, exploration and textural differences. All important for children learning about the world around them. Ages: My 3 year old loved this activity but it's suitable for toddlers through to school age. Materials: Playdough and a variety of different materials collected from around your house that will create different textures and patterns. I set it out here as an Invitation to Play. Imprinting with Rubberbands, Pipecleaner, Comb and strip of Packing material (polystyrene wrap) Imprinting with Beaded Necklace, Bubblewrap, Duplo brick, Foam Straight into it Realising that it should be flat first It made a slight fuzz texture and the rectangular shape. She wasn't all that impressed How about the duplo? One side looked like that. What about the other side? Oooh, this looked cool! We noticed how the thin yellow playdough appeared green on top of the blue mat We assumed this one would just come out with holes in it. The extra textures inside the holes was unexpected and delightful. She noticed each one was different. These were due to the creases The beads made different prints depending on how they were pressed into the playdough Because of how thin this material way, the biggest imprint was from fingers! Here we talked about grooves and ridges. It also made dots. Very cool This left quite a fuzzy texture and she noted the imprint could be in any shape she desired I wasn't expecting her to put the rubber band on like this She enjoyed looking at and touching the variety of patterns and textures. They were all so different Ask your child, which was their preferred/favourite pattern/texture. Why? Then I sent her on a hunt to find things around the house that she wanted to test the pattern and texture of. This is what she returned with. So many exciting and varied prints. The ideas that came to mind from this were endless... How else can you play with these materials? Handy Tips: - Extend this activity by asking your child to predict what they think the imprint will look like. What different textures and patterns can they achieve with the same material? - Create a picture or pattern using the different indentations from various materials - Use new language and descriptive words like, "textures," "grooves," "ridges," "indentations" etc This will help with their language development. -Ask questions to help connect their understanding using vocabulary to give them words to describe what they're experiencing, eg. "What pattern do you think this will leave?" "What shapes can you see on this material?" "What would happen if you pressed the other side in the playdough?" "How could you make a different texture with this material" etc - Listen to your child talk as they go through their experiences. This will help you determine where they are at with their learning, knowledge and understanding and help you to develop the activity (or future activities) to their level and interests. - Repeat. This activity can be repeated time and time again with a different end result each time. Well what a week it's been - what with birthdays, anniversaries and the start up of all the Home Ed activities. I am leading a science session next week on sight and the eye so have lots of preparation to do, including preparing the dissection kit and sourcing the pig's eyes! In more sewing matters I have started on my Dog Gone Cute blocks. I have been somewhat slow in getting out of the blocks on this one and whilst I have myriad excuses reasons for this I think the only valid is good old procrastination! I have never made blocks like this before and from someone else's pattern. I'm not a pattern kind of girl and this has led to a whole lots of silly questions swirling around my head. What is the best colour to use? What if the background doesn't quite work? What if I don't get the technique? How long will the blocks take? What if I would have done it differently?! Really there was only one way to answer all those questions and it was to sit down and make one! So I did. One night after the girls were in bed I made the block below. The colours weren't my choice but black, white and blue had been requested. I have to say I like him and more importantly I liked the process! The pattern, created by Lorna from Sew Fresh Designs, is amazing. There is a wonderful quilt along happening at the moment where you can makes these cute little pups for free!! There were a couple of times when I thought this can't be right but following through step by step it all came together. There are a few points not exactly where they should be but on the whole I was happy. The one thing I didn't do (you see I told you I would change things) was to iron the seams open. I have never ironed seams open and thought I would continue with ironing to the sides. Well on the second one I decided to follow Lorna's advice ...... what a revelation!!!! With all the pieces involved it made it far easier to iron the seams open and gave a much more accurately pieced block, especially on the blocks where you making triangular shapes such as the ears and muzzle. These blocks were made to the small block size and were intended as a birthday present ....... but sadly the birthday has come and gone. No worries I have another intended use for them! My studio had gone a bit crazy whilst making Straight Line Bow and, having acquired some fat 1/4s at the shows I have been to recently, I realised a tidy was in order. Bits and pieces of fabric were everywhere - can you believe it took all afternoon just to get these two shelves looking like they do?!! Tidying and sorting is something that often gets put to the side for a lot of us because we'd rather be sewing right? Well what a difference this made to my sewing. Later on that night I popped down there before I went to bed and I was able to easily and quickly locate fabric to have a play with these triangles. I think I am going to enter a Guild Challenge where equilateral triangles play a major part, well the only part really, so I made a couple of foundation pieced triangles as an experiment. I managed to get a Project Linus top on my frame over the weekend which was great. It was a bit of struggle initially because it was rather out of square ...... I had to take off the border it came with, give it a bit of a trim and then piece on some new borders. It still wasn't great but I managed to get a nice stippling pattern all across it and hopefully some child will be cheered up to receive such a lovely colourful quilt. My other love, which I realise I haven't blogged much about at all, is crochet. I learnt as a child and usually always have a project on the go. A friend recently asked if I could make her a gecko, he's going to be the mascot for her new branding line, so I jumped at the chance. Here he is .... Again this was made to another person's pattern but I did take some take some liberty with the pattern and made it to a hybrid theirs/mine version! x I am going to link up with Let's Bee Social and WIP Wednesday today.
