First, students read a nonfiction passage about Angelou that includes information on her childhood, early career, writing, and poetry. Then, they’ll complete a Doodle Notes page to show their understanding of the informational text. Next, students will analyze the poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” They’ll participate in repeated readings of the poem as their analysis of the poem becomes more and more complex. They’ll use their understanding of the poet as a basis for aspects of their analysis. Students will record their poem interpretations in an interactive flip book. Resource Overview: This resource is designed to help students learn about Maya Angelou, and then analyze one of her poems. Students will read a nonfiction passage about Angelou. The article is an incredibly unique DOODLE ARTICLE. While reading the doodle article, they’ll answer questions and sketch doodles directly in the passage to show their understanding of the text. Then, students will fill in a Doodle Notes page to creatively respond to the text about Angelou. Students will practice skills in sequencing, connecting to the text, questioning, evaluating, and synthesizing as they complete the Doodle Notes page. After building background information on the poet, students will analyze the poem “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.” As students analyze the poem, they'll complete a five-page interactive flip book. Students will complete repeated readings of the poem to develop deep interpretation and comprehension. This mini-unit will take at least 3 days to complete. Added Bonus: As part of the Doodle Article about Maya Angelou, students will color and cut out a bookmark with an inspirational quote from Angelou.
