We’re dedicated living book fans. Life is too short to learn from textbooks. We like to choose to learn from books written by someone intimately familiar with the chosen historical period, perhaps from that period themself, and usually with beautiful illustrations to further ignite our imaginations. These are some of our favorite books we enjoyed last year when we studied early American history, the 1000’s through about the 1680’s. NATIVE AMERICANS Chapter Books Children of the Longhouse, Joseph Bruchac (1500s-1700s; New England area; Grades: 2-5)Burchac has been writing books about the indigenous heritage and culture for decades. His books are wonderful ways to see some of these societies that sadly don’t exist anymore. Picture Books Hiawatha and the Peacemaker, Robbie Robertson (1300s; Iroquois nations) The Legend of Sleeping Bear, Kathy-Jo Wargin (A legend told by the Ojibwe of Michigan) – be aware there is a sad ending. Very Last First Time, Jan AndrewsThis beautiful little book takes place in Inuit village on Ungava Vat in northern Canada. EARLY EXPLORERS AND FIRST SETTLERS (1005-1584) Historical Spines The Discovery of the Americas, Betsy Maestro (Prehistory through 1400s; North America) Exploration and Conquest: The Americas After Columbus: 1500-1620, Betsy Maestro (1500-1620; North America) Chapter Books Viking Adventure, Clyde Bulla (1000s; Europe to Greenland) The Vikings, Elizabeth Janeway (1000s; Europe to Greenland) Picture Books Leif the Lucky, Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire (100s; Europe to Greenland) The Mystery of the Lost Colony, Candice Ransom (1584; Virginia, Grades: 1-3) PILGRIMS, PURITANS, & SETTLERS (early 1600s) Historical Spines The New Americans: Colonial Times: 1620-1689, Betsy Maestro (1620-1689; American Colonies; Grades: 1-5 Chapter Books Anne Hutchinson’s Way, Jeannine Atkins (1600s; Massachusetts; Grades: 1-4) A Lion to Guard Us, Clyde Robert Bulla (1609; England to Virginia; Grades: 3-6) Pilgrim Stories, Margaret Pumphrey (1600s; England to American Colonies; Grades: 1-5) The Landing of the Pilgrims, James Daughtery (1620s; American Colonies; Grades: 3-7) Finding Providence: The Story of Roger Williams by Avi (1635; Massachusetts Bay Colony; Grades 1-3) Elin’s Amerika, Marguerite de Angeli (1648; Delaware River, New Jersey area; Grades: 1-6) Picture Books Our Colonial Year, Cheryl Harness (1600s; American Colonies; Grades: K-3) The Boy Who Fell Off the Mayflower or John Howland’s Good Fortune (1600s; American Colonies; Grades: 1-5) Squanto’s Journey: The Story of the First Thanksgiving, Joseph Bruchac (1620; New England colonies; Grades: 2-6) Three Young Pilgrims, Cheryl Harness (1620; England to American Colonies; Grades: K-4) You may also enjoy: Living Books on the Middle Ages 5 Relatable Parenting Books for Homeschoolers Before you please, please pin this image!

Westward expansion is such an interesting topic for students. The idea of traveling across the country on foot for months is something that many students cannot imagine. How Can We Make This Unit Even More Fun? Acting out the pioneers experiences and using interactive notebooks are both helpful. Add replicas and other items inside of a box for students to explore. They can write about their findings and "touch" the past. Interactive notebooks are also fun.Click here to access a westward expansion interactive notebook. Ask an intriguing question that students must research. This builds up interest in the unit and is a great way to integrate research into the lesson. (*Many sources have stated that water was not sold for $100 a cup, but prices along the pioneer trails were high for items.)

As we near the end of our school year, I wanted to share one resource that has been a joy to use: Early American History by Beautiful Feet Books. For reference, we have a 2nd grader and a 4th grader this year, and I wanted a history curriculum that could be used by both students. Two years ago, we enjoyed learning about American history through The Playful Pioneers by The Peaceful Press. This was the perfect introduction to American history and it helped us establish a rhythm for my first year teaching two students. It was truly family-style, hands-on, and had wonderful book selections. I'd recommend it for the early years of elementary school. I knew we wanted to dive a little deeper into American history this year, and Beautiful Feet Early American History was a perfect fit for us. Choosing a grade level I wasn't sure whether to choose from the Early American History Primary Pack (recommended for K through 3rd grade) or the Early American History Intermediate Pack (recommended for 4th through 6th grade), but after looking at the book choices for both, I ended up deciding on the Primary Pack because I knew I could read many of the books to our entire family. I did use a few of the chapter books from the Intermediate Pack for independent reading choices for Liam, our 4th grader. Because both packs follow the same timeline, this worked seamlessly. We also began working through U.S. Geography through Literature Pack K-3 this year, which was a great fit as well. We'll continue working on this through the summer. Here's what I loved about this curriculum: + It's literature-based, which is our favorite way to learn. Instead of relying on textbooks or rote memorization, the books chosen are
