Hmong story cloths provide a visual documentation of the historical and cultural legacy of the Hmong people from the country of Laos. The Hmong first began making the story cloths during their time in refugee camps, and featured here are 48 vibrant story cloths that provide a comprehensive look at their lives and culture. The creation of a story cloth begins with the selection of fabric and images outlined onto the fabric. Long satin stitches of multi-colored threads fill in the image, while details are applied with intricate satin stitches and borders pieced together and hand-stitched. Topics include history, traditional life in Laos, Hmong New Year, folk tales, and neighboring people. The quality and diversity of content of the story cloths build upon one another to provide a holistic understanding of the Hmong culture and history. Augmented with personal stories and artifacts, this book is perfect for history buffs and textile artisans alike.

Crash Course and is the brain-child of vlogbrothers Hank and John Green. It is a YouTube channel that addresses a wide variety of topics. While John covers the historical and literature side, brother Hank covers the science side. Each “Crash Course” video is 10-15 minutes long and quick a succinct recap of concepts you would cover in one of your classes. Each video is very well done and tries to meet students at their level. This bundle collects the questions that go along with Hank’s Chemistry videos. The content is geared toward a more AP/early college level, however high school chemistry students can get A LOT from the videos. A file of answer keys are included with the question sheets. About the Book "Roth Family Foundation Music in America imprint"--First page. Book Synopsis Listening for the Secret is a critical assessment of the Grateful Dead and the distinct culture that grew out of the group's music, politics, and performance. With roots in popular music traditions, improvisation, and the avant-garde, the Grateful Dead provides a unique lens through which we can better understand the meaning and creation of the counterculture community. Marshaling the critical and aesthetic theories of Adorno, Benjamin, Foucault and others, Ulf Olsson places the music group within discourses of the political, specifically the band's capacity to create a unique social environment. Analyzing the Grateful Dead's music as well as the forms of subjectivity and practices that the band generated, Olsson examines the wider significance and impact of its politics of improvisation. Ultimately, Listening for the Secret is about how the Grateful Dead Phenomenon was possible in the first place, what its social and aesthetic conditions of possibility were, and its results. This is the first book in a new series, Studies in the Grateful Dead. From the Back Cover "Scholars and cerebral Deadheads alike will be delighted by Ulf Olsson's acid test: he subjects the Grateful Dead to a barrage of Big Ideas and determines that the band passes with its freak flag flying high. A must-read for anyone who wants to better understand the improvisatory possibilities of the countercultural cast of mind."--David Farber, Roy A. Roberts Distinguished Professor, University of Kansas "A splendid account of the music of the Grateful Dead as a form of improvisation that remains both in and out of dominant culture, weathering all politics, all setbacks and defeats, with equal tenacity."--Wai Chee Dimock, Professor of English and American Studies, Yale University, and editor of PMLA Review Quotes "...presents a complex but rounded picture of a band that was both deeply traditional yet genuinely avant-garde, fiercely independent yet--at least in its latter years--undeniably mainstream, apolitical yet politically challenging." -- "All About Jazz" About the Author Ulf Olsson is Professor of Comparative Literature at Stockholm University.
How do you design a culminating project that simultaneously holds students accountable for reading, writing, and critical thinking skills while maintaining a high level of engagement? Why do a Radio Show? It covers all of the skills of an essay but reduces work and student anxiety. This Radio Show Project is designed as a semester capping project to be done during or directly after a unit on the Great Depression. It will encourage students to write a script in the tone of a Comedy, Drama, Mystery, Scifi, Western or Detective show while covering key topics and concepts from the Great Depression/Roaring 20's Era. It's a fun way to get students to learn content and is also designed to streamline and shift your grading from a dreaded end of semester slog to a quick-to-grade celebration of student learning. Time (3-4 hours of class time): This project can be assigned as homework (in which case you will only need around 1 hour of class time for presenting) or as an in class assignment. Deep Google Integration: This project is designed to be used with google docs, google classroom and is chromebook friendly! However, pen and paper versions of all steps of the assignment (except for audio creation) are included! End on a High Note: The project ends with an awards ceremony. On the last day, you simply have the students perform their radio shows. The rest of the class (the audience) will be prompted to take notes and vote for their favorite documentaries in the following categories: --Best Narration: Most unnecessarily dramatic narration --Best Effects: Best Sound Effects in a Classic Radio Show --Best Writer: Historically accurate and insightful dialogue --Best Show: Best Radio Show Overall While students listen, you can grade using the simple and clear rubric. Afterwards, the google forms based vote (included) will be auto tallied and you can print/present the awards. Extend upon these skills: If you end your 1st Semester with this project, it can be a great training ground for many of the skills necessary to complete our end of the year Documentary project. If you like this project, you should check it out: Dustbin's US History Documentary Project What's included: -A complete 49 page Teacher's guide (including pictures, step by step instructions, pen and paper versions of all steps of the assignment and even printable awards). -Google Docs, Slides and Forms based worksheets for all steps of the project, complete with built in instructions and scaffolding (designed to be assigned directly in google classroom).
