Additional Information This iconic image containing the simple phrase "We Want Beer" on their protest signs remains one of the most enduring images of the last days of prohibition. Labor Unions held considerable strength in manufacturing regions across the Midwest and Northeast during the latter portions of the nineteenth and early parts of the twentieth century. Prohibition in the United States lasted thirteen years, from 1920 to 1933, and was part of an effort rooted in American Christianity dating back to the nineteenth century. Many immigrant communities that established neighborhoods across the United States had cultures that revolved around brewing, distilling and consuming alcohol. Bars, saloons, and taverns served as focal gathering points for workers in nearly every community in the United States. The legislation outlining prohibition, The Volstead Act, passed in 1919, and alcohol was officially banned across the United States. While outlawing alcohol was supposed to create a more orderly society, the criminal elements that developed to supply thirsty consumers created a threat to communities across America. Illegal stills and smuggled alcohol continued to thwart the efforts of the federal government to effectively keep alcohol out of the hands of Americans. This distinctive photograph illustrates the desire of the American working class to regain their access to beer and spirits. It also marked a cultural turning point in America, with urban residents feeling their rights were being imposed upon by more conservative rural residents who did not hold the same values. This photo depicts a pivotal moment in American history and culture.

Additional Information Sigmund Freud is considered one of the leading pioneers of modern-day psychological analysis and remains an influential writer regarding theories about mental health and the root causes of mental issues. Captured at the height of his career in 1921, this iconic photograph casts him in an academic style with a thoughtful demeanor. Freud was born in Austria in 1856 and studied medicine at the University of Vienna in 1881, and set up a clinical practice in 1886. Freud fled Austria in 1938 to avoid persecution after Germany annexed Austria. He would die one year later while exiled in England. Freud was the founder of Psychoanalysis, and Josef Breuer inspired his work and theories, though he refined these teachings throughout his career into the early twentieth century. Psychoanalysis is not widely practiced in recent years though it has influenced and given rise to other forms of therapy that are commonly practiced today. Freud published numerous works that became read by an audience outside of the medical community, and his students would go on to further develop the practice. One of his students, Carl Jung, would go on to create further forms of analysis and become a leader in new forms of analytical therapy. Freud's influence continues to be felt throughout the therapeutical and medical world, and his theories are widely taught in psychology courses at every level. This is an authentic piece of history that captures Freud as he became a well-known figure in both medical and public circles.

Additional Information The thirteen years of Prohibition in the United States were brought on by legislation passed by Woodrow Wilson in 1917. However, the ban on the sale and manufacture of alcohol would not go into effect until July 1, 1919. This iconic image shows a crowded bar in New York City on the eve of Prohibition and illustrates the popularity of bars and social spaces in the early portions of the twentieth century. Alcohol held significant cultural importance for many Americans who were immigrants themselves or descendants of immigrants from Ireland, Germany, Scandinavia, and Western Europe. These cultures brought their traditions and recipes for beer, wine, and spirits and continued traditional methods for brewing and distillation. Bars and saloons across the nation had become important spaces where lively discussions and social interactions brought groups together in venues that were established largely based on cultural lines. Though the consumption of alcohol was technically illegal, Prohibition led to the establishment of Speakeasies and alcohol that was smuggled or manufactured illegally. So-called bootleggers made spirits in rural locations and devised elaborate systems for getting moonshine to urban areas where desire remained considerably high. The ratification of the Twenty-First Amendment officially ended Prohibition on December 5, 1933. This iconic image remains an enduring symbol of America's population of immigrants and their distinct cultures and traditions. This image immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. Its unique angle gives the viewer a sense of being in the moment themselves.

Additional Information This is one of the most famous paintings of the late nineteenth century by English artist Francis Barraud and depicts his dog Nipper looking into an early gramophone. This image would go on to become one of the most world's most recognized trademarks. This work helped popularize early sound recording and gave Barraud international fame and regard, which helped establish his career as an influential corporate artist who would shape the style and aesthetic of the form for the next century. Barraud would later say of his inspiration for His Master's Voice: "It is difficult to say how the idea came to me beyond the fact that it suddenly occurred to me that to have my dog listening to the phonograph, with an intelligent and rather puzzled expression, and call it His Master's Voice would make an excellent subject. We had a phonograph, and I often noticed how puzzled he was to make out where the voice came from. It was certainly the happiest thought I ever had." Barraud would never match the success of this work, though it remains one of the most iconic pieces of corporate art and an iconic piece of both art and recording history that links the viewer to the past while displaying the evolution of recording and developments made in the latter portions of the nineteenth century. The image would become a symbol of quality and excellence under the Victor Talking Machine Company and later RCA Victor, which became an industry leader.

Additional Information One of the most influential artists in Jazz, Louis Armstrong, remains one of the most recognized and iconic American musicians of the twentieth century. His legacy has touched nearly every genre of music since his career first started in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early 1920s, where his skill as a cornet and trumpet player gained him local celebrity before he would go on to achieve international acclaim as a band leader and television personality. Armstrong became recognized for his signature gravely singing voice and quickly became one of the most popular performers of the twentieth century. Throughout his career, Armstrong refrained from publicly discussing political views, and his music was some of the first to crossover into mainstream America. Armstrong began playing on Riverboats and other Brass Bands at an early age before moving to Chicago in 1922 to perform with King Oliver in Oliver's Creole Jazz Band in what was one of the most prosperous times for the city, where jobs were plentiful. Black Americans had formed communities that helped create spaces for these performers to entertain residents, leading to the creation of some of the most influential music of the twentieth century. This iconic photograph captures the legacy and character of Satchmo at the peak of his career. It remains an enduring tribute to his ability to entertain and delight audiences across the globe. It immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present and preserving Armstrong's history and influence.

The Endurance remained trapped in pack ice before ultimately sinking into the Weddell Sea after two months. Hurley ventured to Antarctica numerous times and ultimately spent more than four years traveling to the continent and documenting these adventures with historical photographs. This vintage photograph remains one of the most critical images from the 1914 journey and has become emblematic of the spirit of these early twentieth-century explorers and their intrepid spirit. The unique style and classic aesthetic immediately transport the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. Hurley was the official photographer for Shackleton's expedition, and he produced a prolific amount of material. On a previous trip, Hurley filmed and produced a documentary titled Home of the Blizzard. This vintage photograph gives a glimpse into the rugged conditions that these explorers endured on these trips and how prevailing over them became part of their daily activities. Shackleton and his crew remained trapped in ice until they could launch their lifeboats for an arduous five days at sea before arriving at Elephant Island.

Additional information One of the most profoundly influential leaders in the field of childcare, Dr. Maria Montessori, founded and established a new way of teaching and raising children throughout her career, which remains one of the most popular forms of education in the Western world to this day. Early in her career, Montessori worked with children who had learning disabilities or other cognitive impairments, which would inform her later work and philosophy of teaching young children. Montessori became well known for her public speaking, writing, and advocacy for the need for society to work towards solving the problem of juvenile delinquency. Her teachings and philosophy have become known as the Montessori Method and focus on early education by allowing children to explore their natural interests with less emphasis on formal educational techniques, which supports independence as well as enables children to gain knowledge on a vast array of topics and subjects and can also place different ages in the same class to encourage socialization. Montessori would become one of the first women to become a medical doctor in Italy in the late nineteenth century and, by the time of this photograph, had gained international acclaim for her work in the field of Pediatrics and Psychology. This portrait in 1930 depicts Montessori with a distinguished air, representing her accomplishments through her decades-long career, which has come to represent some of the most significant developments in education for young children. This is an authentic piece of photographic history of one of the most iconic educators in history.

This is a strange and remarkable book. There must be dozens of books on the Declaration of Independence written from every conceivable point of view—historical, political, theoretical, philosophical, and textual—but no one has ever written a book on the Declaration quite like Danielle Allen’s Our Declaration: A Reading of the Declaration of Independence in Defense of Equality.

The light of life and the natural world. Of all the vastness of space, as of yet, we know of only one planet that supports life. At least within some great distance from here, life is rare. Each organism being the exquisite and detailed product of billions of years of evolution, life is precious. This point of light and inspiration stands in contrast to the lanterns and lights that are historically thought to be sources of illumination but are now dimmed; mythologies and superstitions humans have created as we struggled in the dark of ignorance to understand our world. But the process of science has revealed a luminous, living planet, more intricate and amazing than we could have ever imagined. Let us embrace the light of life in everyone, kindled over billions of years, and combine our efforts to light a brilliant future. _______ Frame not included.
