Another Animal Themed Project for Camp this summer - This one inspired by Franz Marc and his Beautiful Blue Horses. I am going to read the students the book "The Artist Who Painted A Blue Horse" by Eric Carle, and then we'll look at a few examples of Franz Marc's Blue Horses. I tried several versions of this project and eventually simplified it to one horse on blue card stock layered onto a sheet of red card stock. The exaggeration and somewhat abstract style of Franz Marc is a challenge to translate into an elementary project. This project is for young elementary age students so I'm going to give them an outline of the horse shape to trace onto blue paper. Once they have the outline we'll free draw the inside lines of the jaw, eyes, ears, chest, stomach etc... I'll demonstrate how to use oil pastels with emphasis on mixing colors and creating shadows and highlights. They'll use an assortment of blue, black and white oil pastels to create a rich layering of color for their horse. When they are satisfied with their horse we'll use the red card stock to draw a background similar to the one in this painting: Now they'll use yellows, greens, oranges, etc.. to create their own version of Marc's vibrant color. We'll talk about the direction of the oil pastel strokes and how they create movement in the "painting". How using vertical lines in vertical shapes works better than horizontal. The same for using horizontal lines in the sky etc... They can ignore the area where the horse covers the paper. Once finished we'll mat the Oil Pastels on Black Cardstock. I can't wait to see the student's version of this project!

Tree slice art, made from a real tree. Each print is made by hand by printing directly from the roots of a tree. This tree grew in a beautiful area in the Wasatch Mountains near the town of Huntsville and at the foot of the Snow Basin Ski Resort. The wood that is used to make the prints is gathered from already fallen trees. As an artist, my purpose is to reveal the artistry that exists in nature and to present it in a way that is accessible enough to hang on a wall in your home. I also want to bring our attention to our impact on the landscapes that surround us. These tree ring prints help us see our place in a much larger historical context and hopefully each ring makes us reflect on the limited time that we have in this beautiful landscape. Each print is like a fingerprint from mother nature. All prints are made by hand using the traditional woodblock method. Frame sold separately. How this pilot changed how high people thought women could fly
A few weeks ago I made a trip down the street to the CMU School of Drama warehouse where the historic costume collection is housed to view originals with the Couture Techniques class. I snapped a few pictures of my favorite couture techniques for future reference. Above it a bow trimmed interior coat pocket, now in shreds. Below is a similar style pocket with the addition of pleated trim. The bows and trim on the pockets make the pockets look pretty as well as aiding in guiding the hand to the pocket. I thought the addition of the bows was adorable. Above soutache trimmed buttons. These would be easy to create to add interest to fabric covered buttons. Pin Tuck Buttons - another great way to cover buttons to make them interesting. The interior of an antique bodice showing the carefully bound seam allowances with bound notches. Fabulous color combination and trim on a jacket. This trim is fabulous and easy to create. The trim is created by drawing the fabric over two rows of cording to create a gathered look. So creative. Delicate cut steel buckles and velvet trim. Isn't the color combination fabulous, too? I have been pushing myself to make bolder color choices in my modern wardrobe and I want to also push myself to make bolder color choices and color combinations in my reenacting wardrobe. I'll look forward to future trips to the collection. Tomorrow I leave for a fabric shopping trip to NYC to purchase fabrics for the dress(es) that I will be creating as part of my thesis. I'll be keeping an eye out for fabulous fabrics for 1860s dresses as well! Wish me luck!

Are you looking for a fun way to teach describing characters and character traits? Try this! Fold each side of a horizontal sheet of paper to the middle. Have the kids draw a picture of the character on the front. Put words to describe the outward appearance of the character on the outside. This can be things that are obvious from the text. Next, open the page up and write character traits and words to describe the character's emotions on the inside. These are things you have to infer about the character's traits based on the evidence from the text. It's pretty fun and these make a great display!
