HIPPOLYTE ALEXANDRE JULIEN MOULIN French, 1832-1884 "Une Trouvaille à Pompéi" (A Find in Pompeii) Sand-cast and patinated bronze | Signed on base "Moulin", sealed with foundry cachet for Thiebaut Freres | a fine lifetime cast circa 1880 Item # 407FNR16W A very fine lifetime example of Hippolyte Moulin's "A Find in Pompeii" cast circa 1880, examples made prior to the turn of the century are quite scarce and exceedingly difficult to find. Particularly retaining the small statue raised in the figure's hand - the attachment of this element to the figure apparently was somewhat uniformly ill-conceived, as so many of the models that exist today are lacking this tiny (and most important) figure. The base is signed in script "Moulin" and sealed with the foundry cachet for Thiebaut. First conceived in 1863 and exhibited at the Salon of 1864 (no. 2718), it was subsequently acquired by the French Government for 7000 francs before being shown again at the Exposition Universelle of 1867 (group I, class 3, no 169). Today it sits on a pedestal in the Musée d'Orsay alongside the similarly contrapasto figure of "Winner of the Cockfight" by Alexandre Falguière. Both figures seem to derive inspiration from the figure of Mercury by Giambologna, which is perhaps hinted at in the positioning of the figure held gingerly in our young archeologist's upraised hand. Here he dances with a sense of utter joy, his shovel held gingerly over his shoulder, and having just found this beautiful statue in the ruins he raises his hand high to get a better look at it. Trace rubbing wear to patina, including some rubbing to the inside of his upraised arm, back of the tiny statue in his hand, the shoulder blades, the shovel, edges of the base and other raised elements; all of this has naturally aged and makes the patina all the more vivid; natural changing in the colors of metals has resulted in the roman pins being visible in numerous joints. Some denting to rim of the base. Carefully cleaned and sealed in conservator's wax. A fine presentation.

Hippolyte-Lucas" (lower right) Oil on canvas This compelling portrait of Salome was composed by the French painter Marie Felix Hippolyte-Lucas. While the celebrated artist's oeuvre is filled with bright and cheerful portraits of aristocratic women surrounded by florals, here he takes a different approach. Hippolyte-Lucas' Salome is simultaneously exotic and highly modern, rendered in a style that is both theatrical and bold. The monumental work's rich color palette is filled with gem-inspired hues that lend drama to the scene, highlighting the blatant sexuality of this legendary seductress. Though Salome is not named in the New Testament, she has appeared time and time again in art and literature over the centuries, as both an innocent and a seductress. Her mother, Herodias, resented John the Baptist, who denounced her marriage to King Herod as unlawful. At one evening meal, Salome danced for King Herod and his guests. He was so entranced by her, that he swore to give her whatever she asked of him. At her mother's request, she demanded the head of John the Baptist on a platter. Hippolyte-Lucas portrays her here in the role of the remorseless seductress, standing proudly next to the severed head of her mother's enemy. Born in 1854 in Rochefort-sur-Mer, Marie Felix Hippolyte-Lucas studied under the great French Academic painters Isidore Pils, Karl Lehmann and Évariste Luminais. He became primarily known as a figure and portrait painter, and his oeuvre is filled with bright portraits of aristocratic women. He began exhibiting at the Paris Salon in 1877 and continued to do so until the year before his death, early numerous award over the years. Also a celebrated muralist, he composed decorative paintings for the casino in Monte Carlo, the conference centre at the Musée Océanographique in Monaco, the Paris Stock Exchange and three ceilings in the Préfecture du Rhône. Charles Hippolyte Aubry (1811-1877). French photographer. For more than 30 years Aubry worked as an industrial designer. In January 1864 he formed a Parisian company to manufacture plaster casts and photographs of plants and flowers. Although unsuccessful (he filed for bankruptcy in 1865), he continued to sell photographs to drawing schools throughout the 1870s. His albumen prints are often striking close-ups of natural forms taken with a flat perspective and symmetrical arrangement that was inspired by the lithographic plates traditionally used by industrial design students. The failure of Aubry's ideas on the use of photographs in the industrial design process can be attributed to both the French government's reluctance to introduce photography into art schools and the shift in French taste towards more abstract, simplified decorations for manufactured goods. His work is included in the collections of the Bibliothèque Nationale, the La Bibliothèque des Arts Décoratifs and Musée d'Orsay, Paris, and the J. Paul Getty Museum, Malibu, CA.
