In a post last year, Colin Marshall wrote of the Swedish abstract painter Hilma af Klint, who “developed abstract imagery,” notes Sweden’s Moderna Museet, “several years before” contemporaries like Wassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, and Kazimir Malevich.
The artist and mystic Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) never described the 193 paintings she produced between 1906-15 as “Abstract art.” Instead, af Klint thought of these paintings as diagrammatic illustrations inspired by conversations she (and her friends) conducted with the spirit world from the late 1890s on. That af Klint did not call her work “Abstract art” is enough for some art historians to (foolishly) discount her art as the work of the first Abstract artist. In fact af Klint was painting her Abstract pictures long before Wassily Kandinsky made his progression from landscapes to abstraction sometime around 1910, or Robert Delaunay dropped Neo-Impressionism for Orphism and then moseyed along into Abstract art just a year or two later. But these men were members of voluble artistic groups and Kandinsky was a lawyer who knew the importance of self-promotion. Unlike af Klint who worked alone, in seclusion, and stipulated that her artwork was not to be exhibited until twenty years after her death. Af Klint died in 1944. A revelatory introduction to the spiritualist abstractions of the Swedish painter and lifelong friend of Hilma af Klint. Until now, the Swedish painter Anna Cassel (1860–1937) had mostly been famed for her paintings of landscapes and urban environments, with motifs from the Swedish rural counties Jämtland and Västmanland, and from Stockholm. She is less known for her deep involvement with spiritualist groups, the circle of Hilma af Klint and the occult art group known as The Five. Only now, nearly a century after her death, is Cassel's significant, mesmerizing and original contribution to abstract and spiritual art garnering attention, not least thanks to her lifelong friendship and collaboration with Af Klint. The two women met while studying at Slöjdskolan in Stockholm and later were part of the group The Five in 1896, along with Sigrid Hedman, Mathilda Nilsson and Cornelia Cederberg. The Five began as a regular spiritualist group but soon experimented with seances, developing the automatism technique used decades later by the Surrealists. Cassel, hailing from a wealthy family, also financially supported Af Klint throughout much of her career. In this beautifully produced volume, the life and work of Anna Cassel is presented for the first time to a wider audience, revealing her as a creator of gorgeous, radiant abstractions and spiritual diagrams. Cassel is introduced in two essays that make clear that the collaboration between her and Af Klint was much deeper than previously known. This is also the first time that Cassel’s spiritual work The Saga of the Rose has been published.
An artist both of her time and well ahead of it, Hilma af Klint was a rare original. Years before such Modernist pioneers as Piet Mondrian and Vasily Kandinsky dipped their brushes into abstraction, af Klint was breaking ground with colorful, energetic compositions that veered away from the figurative. In 1896, artists and lifelong friends Anna Cassel and Hilma af Klint founded the spiritualist group De Fem (The Five). They were joined in spiritual exploration by Sigrid Hedman, Mathilda Nilsson and Cornelia Cederberg. The five artists held seances and communed with spirits. They were guided to draw using automatism, a technique later employed by the Surrealists. One drawing from De Fem featuring what appears to be an ammonite shell was the inspiration for this shirt. The flower is a nod to the Edelweiss Society, another spiritualist group to which The Five belonged before they left and started their own society. Named after Hilma AF Klint. This new setting was a dream ring we had been envisioning in the back of our minds for some time. For our first ring we chose this lovely 1.74ct Champagne Rosecut Elongated Hexagon Diamond and we accented it with some good size diamond baguettes and a few princess diamonds on the top and bottom. We delicately and precisely engrave starbursts around the center of the design. Future iterations of this design will have different shapes/outlines of the ring.
