The Heavenly Hollyhocks Bundle was a hidden gem in the catalogue and it did not get enough attention! I adore these gorgeous layering dies, so I had to feature them one more time before they retire this month. Our Stamping Symphony Instahop theme this month was retiring products, so this project was the perfect fit to share! I love watercolouring to create a soft, spring-like background, and it definitely created the look I was going for here. I used a piece of Watercolour Paper 4-1/8" x 5-3/8" and added splotches of Calypso Coral and Parakeet Party Inks randomly. Once dry, I splattered some full strength ink using my Blends. The Layering Hollyhocks Dies are just so gorgeous--and they are on sale for 60% off right now!!! You won't regret picking these up for a steal! There are two large dies included in the set that I layered to create my focal image. I die cut the shadow layer from Basic White Cardstock, and the detail layer from more Watercolour Paper. I added colour to the detail layer with my Petal Pink, Calypso Coral and Parakeet Party Inks, and then glued to the white shadow die. My sentiment is from the coordinating Heavenly Hollyhocks Stamp Set and is heat embossed with White Embossing Powder on Basic Black Cardstock. Although we no longer have a team blog hop you can head to my Instagram page and hop along with everyone there as we say goodbye to our favourite retiring products this month. Happy Crafting, Barb
Yesterday, I shared how our 'stay-cation' was disrupted by an air conditioning system that gave up on us. I had intended to 'put a bow' on that story at the end of my post, but I forgot and just ended the post after I talked about my card. Your messages

Hollyhocks may look romantic and old-fashioned, but they add color and drama to today's gardens. Grow them beside fences and walls or in the back of the border, where their tall stalks can reach for the sky.

As I've mentioned once or twice before, I love free plants. What better way to get them reliably than harvesting your own seeds and growing your own?! This time…
Hollyhocks are biennial plants in many climates, meaning they grow leaves the first year and flower, seed, and die the next. However, depending on their growing conditions, your hollyhocks may keep coming back as short-lived perennials....
The semi-tall stalks of Indian Spring Hollyhock are filled with single and semi-double blooms in shades of pink. Prolifically blooming, Indian Spring Mix is known to bloom in its first year, which is unusual for Hollyhocks.

How to Plant Single Mix Hollyhock WHEN TO PLANT HOLLYHOCK SEEDS Direct Sow approximately one week before the threat of frost has passed. Hollyhocks can also be sown indoors approximately 9 weeks before your final frost and transferred outdoors about 2-3 weeks after the final frost has passed. WHERE TO PLANT HOLLYHOCK SEEDS Plant hollyhocks, in moist, rich, and well-draining soil that gets full sun exposure - though they can tolerate Partial Shade. One of the significant causes of hollyhock failure is planting in soil that is too dry. HOW TO PLANT HOLLYHOCK SEEDS Soak your seeds beforehand in warm water for approximately 12 hours. Direct sow outdoors onto the surface of the soil and compress firmly, but do not cover. Hollyhocks require sunlight to germinate. If starting indoors, use tall, individual pots to transplant, as Hollyhocks have long taproots. HOW TO CARE FOR HOLLYHOCK Hollyhocks are a short-lived perennial, tending to last about 2-3 years. This lifespan can be extended by removing flowers as soon as they fade. In non-tropical climates, you can cut your hollyhocks down and mulch in order to give them longer life as well. Hollyhocks can also be susceptible to rust, which will usually infect lower-growing leaves, but can spread upwards. Prevent rust by watering from below, and promoting good air circulation between your hollyhocks.
There are lots of different kinds of pink. Pure pink is just pink, nothing else—sweet, sugary, and wonderful. But often pinks are mixed with a hint of yellow to make a warmer, coral color, or a hint of blue to create a strong, screaming magenta. The different types of pink interact differently with other colors.
From when to plant hollyhock seeds, to germination, to storing seeds, this guide makes growing these old-fashioned favorites (Alcea rosea) a little easier.

Did you plant a Hollyhock garden last year that is currently in bloom? Do you know how to preserve the plant and help it bloom a little bit longer this year?
I try to add some leisure time when I have to drive to antique markets. Last summer when Trinidad came over we took a different route to the south of France where we do the buying for our fall container. We took the coastal road south till we got to our destination, Ile de Rê, an Island on the west coast of France. Along the Atlantic cost across of La Rochelle. We stayed a few days in Saint Martin de Rê, the capital of the Island. The hollyhocks sprout out of every gap in the sidewalks and alleys.
