I wanted to create a plush that had great personal meaning to me. When I was in college, I studied Mandarin for several years. My Laoshi (professor) taught me many things about not only the language and Chinese culture, but other cultures as well. This is where I learned of the Maneki-Neko cats. They are a Japanese designed figurine that is specifically made to bring various forms of good luck and fortune to those who possess the cat. My Laoshi had enthused about how important it was to set up the Maneki-Neko figurines prior to the New Years and Lunar New Year Celebrations as they became a good luck charm for the upcoming year. She loved collecting these because of how much they vary according to where they are purchased from and how the artist interprets color and their surroundings to create unique designs. Unfortunately, my Laoshi had passed away unexpectedly a few years ago. These plushies are my way to pay homage to her as well as hopefully bring happiness to others. The colors stand for various reasons: The Red Cat is designed to protect oneself from Illness, The Orange cat is for safe and enjoyable travels, The Gold Cat is to bring the owner wealth and prosperity, the Green cat is made to bring good luck with education and studies, the Blue cat is to offer wisdom and career success and lastly, the Gray cat is made to attract the owner to helpful people. All of these cats are crocheted using 100% polyester fiber. They also include a collar that is removable in polyester yarn as well. The gold medallion on the collar is made using 100% acrylic yarn. The faces of the cats have a pink embroidered nose and black eyes. All of the cat plushies are filled with 100% polyester fiberfill. I include Wash & Care instructions with every item that I make.
