Classroom magazines have become an invaluable resource in my classroom for exposing my students to informational texts. Our language arts curriculum lacks quality non-fiction selections. Classroom magazines, such as Time For Kids and Scholastic News have been great for exposing my students to engaging and current non-fiction material. However, I use to struggle with the best way to work them into my language arts block. This post explains what I have done to make the most of all those classroom magazines. Each year, I am so excited when our magazines start to arrive. However, they use to quickly start pile up, week after week, and I found myself squeezing them in whenever I could. Looking back, I realize that I was using them as filler. My challenge this year was finding a way to integrate them into my language arts program in a way that was more meaningful and focused. So, here are several ways that I have been using magazines in my classroom this year. Focus on Text Features At the beginning of the year, we first spent a lot of time focusing on the parts of a magazine, particularly the text features. We talked about each feature and students identified them in their magazines. Then we talked about the information that can be gathered from different text features, and how they are used to add meaning to the text. Later, my students started “collecting” text features in a packet. We wait until the end of the week, when we are done with the entire magazine, then they cut out the different text features and sort them in their packet, adding to their “collection” each week. They love this!! Focus on Text Structures After several weeks of reading the magazines as a class, we began to focus on the different text structures. Instead of simply summarizing or identifying the main idea, we began to take a closer look at the structure of each text. We talked about the different structures and identified signal words for each type. Now when my students read and respond to each article, there is an emphasis on the particular text structure. Practice Close Reading Now that my students are comfortable with text features and structures, we put it all together to practice close reading. My students use a checklist to read through a text, at least 3 times to identify text features and structure, to find the main idea and evidence, and to truly comprehend what they are reading. Close reading helps students to dig deeper and to understand what they are reading in different ways. Expand Student Vocabulary Reading classroom magazines exposes my students to new ideas and new vocabulary that they might not otherwise be exposed to. They use context clues to determine the meaning of each word. Then they define and draw pictures for each new word to show their understanding, and to help visualize the meaning of the new words they learn. They have developed quite a collection! Talk and Write About Informational Texts Lastly, I use magazine articles as meaningful topics for class discussions and writing assignments. Sometimes, after reading a debate or opinion piece, my students will share their opinions with their classmates, then write an opinion essay on the topic. I also ask them to choose articles to do additional research on, in order to produce an informative writing assignment. It is so important that students use texts to write, and that they learn to refer to texts when providing evidence in their own writing and conversations. The current events and ideas from classroom magazines serve as a great springboards for both conversation and writing. I like to have my students organize all of their materials in reading folder, so that they have all the tools they need when working with non-fiction texts!! For the past year, our kids have used (and loved) their Yoto audiobook players. If you're unfamiliar with Yoto, I've written a post with all the information you need and a list of our favorite audiobook cards: All About the Yoto Audiobook Player Making your own Yoto cards One of my favorite features of the Yoto is the ability to record or download your own audiobooks onto Make Your Own Yoto cards. Here's more information on how to do that: First, you must own the audio files in order to make your own Yoto cards. Unfortunately, this means that audiobooks from Libby or Scribd or Hoopla won't work for this. In addition, if you have audiobooks from Audible, you can only listen to them within the app (but they aren't a downloadable mp3). There's a way to jailbreak them and download as mp3s, but because that violates Audible's terms of service, I wouldn't advise it. To make your own Yoto card, you'll first need to purchase a Make Your Own card from the Yoto website. Then follow these instructions to upload an mp3 or your own recorded audio file and link it to a card. One of my favorite things about the Make Your Own cards is that you can re-record them as many times as you'd like. So if you're finished listening to one audiobook and ready for a new one, you can use the same card! Where do you find mp3s to download? My current favorite source for purchasing and downloading mp3 audiobooks is Libro.fm. Purchases from Libro.fm benefit a local bookstore of your choice, so I've chosen to support A House With Books in Keller, Texas, which is a lovely new bookstore in my area. Libro.fm frequently has great sales on audiobooks, and you can purchase credits, which often makes more financial sense. Hello Queen, I love affirmations. I do. I think they are wonderful. But I also think that affirmations need to be tailored to what you want and are working through. It is wonderful for me to affirm that I am a magnificent being full of light and love, but if I'm working through a fear of money, or self-doubt, or anything else really, it's not as helpful as it could be. I know this, and you know this. For affirmations to work at their peak power, they need to be tailored to you. I so remember what it was like to not even know how the fuck to write an affirmation. So, I just took the ones that I found that resonated with some part of me. They worked in planting the seeds of a new belief, but I wanted to rip out the weeds of my old thoughts and plant a blossoming flower of beautiful beliefs. I was hungry for change, and I know you are too. Photo by Brittani Burns on Unsplash So, I want to share with you my exact four step process for creating affirmations that truly vibrate on the frequency you are trying to get to. And the reason the affirmations you write for yourself will be so effective, is they will vibrate right into the limiting belief that is causing the block in the first place. They are tailored to you, your aspirations and what you are working on overcoming. Decide what you want. No timidness here. I call you to step into your full power as queen and decide what it is that you want. Get clear on what it looks like. Understand how it feels. Tip for doing this: Ask yourself-Why do I want this? What do I think it will bring me? Get clear and understand which version of you has this (hint: it's not the current version of you. If it was, you would already have what you wanted). Who is the version of you that already has this? How does she feel? What does she think? What does this dream you are going for or thing that you want look like to her? Identify her beliefs. What must she believe to be true to be living her dream life? What beliefs did and behaviors did she have to let go of to get where she is now? Affirm it as if it has already happened (this is the fun part). Take the beliefs that version of you who has what you want and affirm them as if they are already yours. For example, if she believes that money is not earned, you might affirm something like I create money with ease. Or money is naturally attracted to my energy. Then repeat the affirmation until you fucking believe it. Remember, in the words of Kathrin Zenkina (Manifestation Babe), beliefs are just thoughts you became obsessed with. Tip: Never write your affirmations in the negative. Your subconscious mind does not understand no or not. So if you say something like I am not afraid of success, your subconscious mind will focus on the fear of success because that is what you are calling attention to. You would want to try something like success comes easily to me, or success is a peaceful, natural part of my life.
