Legacy Threads - Block 3 - Bow Blocks
Welcome to the Let's Bee Social! So glad to have you join us for the Let's Bee Social weekly linky party! I've always found the Economy Block, also known as the Diamond in a Square or Square in a Square quilt block, interesting. So when I was approached by Free Spirit Fabrics, asking if I would like to play with these cute panda prints... I jumped at the chance to make a baby quilt using great big 12" squares! These adorable prints are from the Pandas collections by David Walker. This collection is available for pre-order now. Ask about them at your local quilt shop! Could it get ANY CUTER?!!! My favourite print has got to be the Garden Party print that I used for the backing.... And the Panda Dot print makes for a beautiful binding... Of course I quilted with my walking foot, making organic wavy lines, using plain white Gutermann thread both on top and in the bobbin. The mix of these lush colours puts me in mind of Spring!!!! This "Pandas" quilt finished at 36" x 48" and was the 29th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. Now... It's your turn for Show and Tell!!! What have you been working on? Click on at least a few of the others who have linked up. In your blog post, please include a link back to my blog. Grab the "Let's Bee Social!" button from above and put it on your sidebar. This way others who visit your blog that week can join in the fun! Share the news of this new linky and Let's Bee Social! Following Sew Fresh Quilts is not required. But it sure would BEE nice! The past couple of weeks have been crazy... ...this week took the cake, when I had to get my income tax paperwork together. That's one chore that always makes me crabby. The only joy I get from it, is being able to shred the paperwork that's over 7 years old! Now that's a party! LOL!! I celebrated with stitching up another of Lorna's fun Christmas blocks, from her "Have a Jolly Little Christmas" series. I'd love to tell you these are my favorite so far, but I'm pretty sure that's what I say every time a new block is released. But really now... Are these just the cutest??? :-) Here's what I have so far! If you love them as much as I do, you can read more about this free QAL, by clicking the link on the left hand side bar. Thanks Lorna! Til next time... Keep on Stitchin'

Well... Merry Christmas to you! This is my first finish of 2017. And my first finish using the blocks in the free Have A Jolly Little Christmas quilt along that just started. You can read all about that here. To be quite honest.... I don't quite recall just exactly how this all started.... I guess during the two weeks that the kids were off school for the Christmas holiday, and also that the hubby was home for a week, I didn't want to spend all my hours closed away in my sewing room. So I sat out where everyone could easily find me. And I relaxed. I got out my graph paper and began to doodle. Sketching out a 12" block. It's pretty obvious that Christmas was on my mind and so this theme evolved into many blocks. Sometimes it's like that. Inspiration comes - like a flood. Then there are other times... Where the blank page stares back at you. So when the ideas are coming freely... I go with it! I'll be the first one to admit.... I got carried away! For these projects I'm making for the Have A Jolly Little Christmas quilt along, I am making from my stash. The first thing I did when everyone went back to school and work, was to do a bit of sorting. I wanted to find out just what did I have in a white/offwhite solid. And I measured all those pieces of yardage and planned accordingly. All the other fabrics are also from my stash. You really only need small pieces for the blocks. And I am determined to start using my fabrics this year and to resist making purchases if I can. It is difficult to resist shopping for new fabrics, but I found some perfectly suitable pieces already on hand. When it came time for quilting, I went with my usual organic wavy lines. I used Ghost White Magnifico thread by Superior Threads on top and plain white Guetermann in the bobbin. I used to do A LOT of quilting in white. And the beginning of this year will have a lot again. The backing is Winter Garden by Susan Winget for Steele Creek Studio, which I found two years ago at Fabric.com. I fell in love with this print and bought it when it was on sale. I bought A LOT. So you'll be seeing more of this too. The binding was left over from my Canada 150 quilt. It really makes me think of Christmas and it goes so well with the backing. It also matches a few places I used it in the blocks, like for Santa's hat, the big bow and the Cardinal's wing. The "Have A Jolly Little Christmas" sampler quilt finished at 42" x 55" and was the 15th use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. This is the first project I have made using the blocks designed for the "Have a Jolly Little Christmas" quilt along. The free colouring page has been downloaded over 1500 times already! It's REALLY, really, really beginning to look a lot MORE like... Christmas! This is my fifth and final finish using the blocks in the free Have A Jolly Little Christmas quilt along. You can read all about that free quilt along here. This block is Santa's Reindeer and the instructions are scheduled to be posted on July 15. The Santa's Reindeer block is one that I have made many times before... But when I seen a 9 block quilt made by a variety of pattern testers for Diane Harris of QuiltMaker magazine using bright fabrics, I knew that I would eventually find the time to make one using solids. I miss solids. Diane is now retired from QuiltMaker magazine and is working on her own offering classes and shows. You can visit Diane over at her new website Stash Bandit. I do consider myself to be "print challenged" and have said so openly while giving a presentation to a few guilds visited last year. So 2016 was the year of challenging myself to use prints instead of those solids that I truly adore. I am concentrating on using my stash this year. And it felt good to dive into my solids and dig around in that bin for a change. So, we have a bright pink reindeer. A pretty yellow reindeer. Orange you glad? Another reindeer. And a green reindeer. When it came time for quilting, I went with my usual organic wavy lines. I used Ghost White Magnifico thread by Superior Threads on top and plain white Guetermann in the bobbin. I used to do A LOT of quilting in white. And the beginning of this year will have has proven to have a lot again. The backing is Winter Garden by Susan Winget for Steele Creek Studio, which I found two years ago at Fabric.com. I fell in love with this print and bought it when it was on sale. I bought A LOT. And have used it a lot for backing all my Have A Jolly Little Christmas quilted items. But I still have plenty left. Classic Black for the binding. This rainbow coloured "Santa's Reindeer" quilt finished at 40" x 40" and was the 23rd use of my 2nd edition of 100 labels ordered from Ikaprint. Are you interested in reading more about the blocks designed for the "Have a Jolly Little Christmas" quilt along? Did you get your free colouring page download?!!! Are you quilting along? And for those of you who can't get enough Christmas.... Those who are too excited to wait for the next block instructions.... You could choose to include blocks from my other free quilt along - Ugly Christmas Sweaters - as both quilt alongs use the same size blocks!!! Interested?!!! Check out the Ugly Christmas Sweaters quilt along here. It is NOT necessary to purchase the pattern in order to participate in either of these Christmas themed quilt alongs, but if you would prefer the convenience of using a printable pdf pattern, the Have a Jolly Little Christmas Collection; which includes all 15 designs and the Ugly Christmas Sweaters patterns are both available for purchase in my pattern store here.
