Students began their journey into printmaking and weaving this last week. Here are some photos of students working on weaving (AND RECYCLING!!) our Jackson Pollock splatter paintings! First grade artists enjoyed the story, The Spider Weaver by Margaret Musgrove. The story introduces students to the legend of the Kente Cloth that originated in Africa. In African cultures weaving is a necessary part of everyday life. Students discovered symbols and meanings in Africa as well as some important concepts of weaving: warp, weft and loom. Each of the students created their paper weave using shapes, lines and color to symbolize exciting patterns in art. Here are a few of the finished works of art on display!

This urban-inspired collection features abstract graphic patterns, contrasting fashion colors, and extraordinary texture effects. Crafted from sumptuously soft, shape-resilient fibers, these rugs are also durable and easy to clean. Turn any interior into a trendsetting and chic space. Features Technique: Woven Material: 50% Polypropylene, 50% Acrylic Red Barrel Studio® recommends only the use of Woolite or other compatible Carpet Cleaner for the cleaning of all rugs. The cleaning process should involve applying the Woolite with a soft bristle brush, rinsing the water, and extracting with a vacuum or extractor. The rug should then be dried by air or a low-temperature hair dryer. Red Barrel Studio® does not guarantee that these methods work and should be used as a guideline only. If the recommended procedure is not effective, call a reputable cleaner. Collection: Hartville Due to the difference in monitor colors, some rug colors may vary slightly. We try to represent all rug colors as accurately as possible. The use of any other cleaning solvent will void the Red Barrel Studio® warranty, and make the cleaning service solely responsible for any damage caused to the rug.

ART OF THE STONE AGE 1st grade artists enthusiastically practiced what they learned about the cave painters from thousands of years ago. After exploring the cave paintings of Lascaux, France through a virtual tour, students visualized that they had gone back in time! We turned out the lights, listened to sounds from inside the caves and used our fingers to paint. Students crumbled the brown butcher paper to make it have texture like a cave walls and then focused on painting animals they found. The earliest form of art, which has survived, is often referred to as “Cave Art.” It has been discovered all over the world from China to Australia. This type of art typically depicts animals, humans, weapons, and symbols and is seen only to have colors found in the natural environment. This is the cave as it hangs in the stairwell entrance...looks pretty good with dimmed light above...gave it more ambience... I think it helps to display pics of the students working during class with the actual work, brings the audience in even more! We used charcoal pastels and paint in a natural color palette to create these on brown butcher paper.

I am THRILLED to finally display some of the awesome Chihuly inspired (click here for artist link) sculptures that my 5th grade artists have been working on for the last month. I totally swiped this lesson idea from my (even more awesome!) friend, colleague, and a past student teacher of mine over at Suffield Elementary School Field Elementary Art Blog I will even go as far as using part of her her studio activity description that she has posted!! Thanks Mrs. Tannert, you're the best! To make them, each student got an 8 1/2" x 11" piece of transparent shrink film and then I had assigned a week prior to the start of the project, the best homework ever! They had to go buy a Slushie or two and save the dome lids for an added "recycle" aspect. They were enthusiastic to say the least about this homework assignment! They drew some fancy organic and geometric shapes with unique patterns, colored them with Sharpies then cut them out. I borrowed some heat guns from other teachers and started melting them down...students loved watching the process. We shot the individual pieces unevenly so that they warped into unique 3-dimensional shapes. The students strung them onto Twisteez wire and some used sections of straws to give the plastic pieces some space between them. See how they turned out~ Incredibly delish! Morgan M. Grace W. Noah Y. and Kayla G. Derek G.
When I started making this bread, my husband and our six children liked it so much that I was baking every day! I was thrilled when the judges at our county fair gave these braids both a blue ribbon and a best of show award! —Nancy Montgomery, Hartville, Ohio
