I recently just finished my first set of Middle School Mentor Sentences to teach grammar. I was thinking earlier this week, what time of the school year is busier?...the beginning of the year or the end of the year. I honestly don't know, but one thing I do know is that I enjoy the end of the year business a little more because it means summer break is right around the corner. There are so many extra details to consider at the end of the year. Grade cards, records (records and more records), special days, award ceremonies, class gifts, closing down your classroom, and more. It's really important to get an early start on all of these loose ends or you will find yourself staying up for some late nights trying get everything finished. One way you can help get yourself organized is by setting up some end of the year totes during the last couple of weeks. The totes I set up were complete, donate, put away, toss. In each tote I placed items or notes for myself to deal with as soon as possible. My goal was to take care of everything in the totes before going home that day (although some items stayed in the totes for a few days). But even if the tote wasn't cleaned out before I left for the day, having everything I needed to do together in one spot really helped me stay focused on getting my end of the year tasks complete. By the way, if there was something in the tote I needed to complete outside of school, like getting gifts for the students, I took a picture with my phone to reference when I was out running errands. This system really helped me get things accomplished before the last day of school. And while I was not able to walk out the door after our end of the year teacher luncheon, I had all my "have to's" finished and had a chance to work on some bigger organization projects. One item in my complete tote was a summer review packet for our rising first graders. I sent our new firsties (and a few of our rising second graders) a supply list and a review packet. If you would like a FREE copy of this summer review packet with your students, click on the picture below. Another to do before wrapping up for summer break was to get my students a fun little end of the year gift. In the past I've given books, candy, sidewalk chalk, and framed pictures of the class. Student gifts this year were bubble wands. I really love sending my sweet students out the door with a small treat. If you are thinking of sending bubbles with your students and need a label for them, click on the picture below. I've linked an editable (and FREE) version of the labels I used. Our sweet girl is totally ready for summer break too. She will be in second grade. Am I a bit choked up?...yes. It is just crazy how quickly she is growing up. D and I love seeing the person she is becoming, but that doesn't stop me from wanting slow down time. The last days of the school year are super busy. But, with a little organization, you can end the year with plenty of energy to enjoy the summer.
In this worksheet, children will draw from a word bank of synonyms for the adjective "happy" to complete 10 sentences.

Are you struggling with how to plan your Math period? Do you want to see how another teacher plans their classroom time? Planning a Math Lesson from start to finish can be a daunting task, but you can follow these simple steps to keep your focus on the Math objective at hand. Step 1 First you need to know your end goal. What do you want the students to learn? What is the Math objective for the lesson? What is the BIG idea that you want the students to master? Write it down. Go back to the goal often and make sure the focus of the lesson is front and center for the students. Step 2 Schedule your goal. Goals don't just happen. Think about how you want to accomplish teaching the lesson. What are you going to do first? What will be your hook for the lesson to grab the students attention? I always start with vocabulary and work from there. Students do an exercise where they write Math definitions on post-its and add the terms & definitions to our classroom Word Wall. (You can DOWNLOAD it HERE: Grades 6-8 Vocabulary Word Wall Activity or Grades 3-5 Vocabulary Word Wall Activity ). Step 3 Now that students know what the lesson will be about, how will they learn the new information? What do you need to scaffold for the students? How will you teach it? My two favorite ways to teach new information to students is with Interactive Math Notebooks (IMN). I use IMN activities along with NO PREP Notes for 6-8 or NO PREP Notes for 3-5 to scaffold information to students. Step 4 Next plan a classroom activity for the whole class to complete during the period. This could be a Card Sort Activity Lesson Plan or Math Stations/Centers or another activity that ties into the lesson with real world applications and practice. The focus should be extending the learning beyond the previous notes, IMN activity, and homework to deepen the students' understanding of the Math topic. Step 5 Lastly assess for understanding with exit slips. If students have mastered the concept, move on to the next Math concept and repeat steps 1-5 again. If there is still a lack of understanding and connection with the Big Idea, review the lesson again with the students by scaffolding with notes and one follow-up activity. Also asking other teachers how they have taught that topic can be a great help to you and your students. Overview of my Math Lesson Plan (2-4 days as needed) Day 1 of Lesson Bellwork (is updating Interactive Math Notebook Table of Contents) (1-5 minutes) Review Vocabulary for Lesson (5-10 minutes) Create a Foldable/Notes (15-20 minutes) Do a classwork activity (i.e. IMN activity or homework page from textbook) (15-20 minutes) Exit Slip (1-5 minutes) Day 2 of Lesson 1. Bellwork (is updating Interactive Math Notebook Table of Contents) (1-5 minutes) 2. Review classwork (1-10 minutes) 3. Math Stations or Card Sort Activity Lesson (30-40 minutes) 4. Exit Slip (1-5 minutes) Day 3 &/or 4 of Lesson (if necessary some lessons are 2 days and some are 3-4 days) Bellwork Math Stations or Card Sort Activity Lesson completed (40-45 minutes) Exit Slip (1-5 minutes) I hope this planning guide helps you to start engaging instruction in your classroom. Starting with a goal helps to drive any plans for student achievement. Make sure your goal is high and watch your students rise to achieve it! Happy planning!
Hi everyone, I've been wanting to link up with Doodle Bugs for the past few weeks and just couldn't seem to get it together (story of my life lately!) So I finally have found the time to link up! Yay! 1. I can't believe it's time for Farley's Currently linky again! I feel like I just linked up for April's Currently (and I haven't posted since then...so sad). If you've never linked up, you have to check it out. 2. So, we've recently worked on 3.NF.2 and have been learning how to plot and identify fractions on a number line. We started by watching this video from Learn Zillion (my go to website...LOVE it): Learn Zillion. We did several days of drawing fraction models above our number line as the video shows. So then we wrote our names and related our names to a number line. The whole name represented the whole and each letter represented part of the whole. The kids seemed to really enjoy this simple activity and it helped solidify their understanding of the number line! 3. In Science, we've been learning about the Skeletal System and my kiddos have been super excited about this unit! I gave them this project menu (that you can get from my TPT store for free by clicking on the picture). This has been highly motivating because first of all they get to choose which projects to complete and also because some of the activities are just plain fun! The projects aren't due for another week so I hope to get some pics up then! 4. Not too long ago, my team gave the third graders a practice EOG test (or READY now) because our kiddos have never taken such a lengthy paper/pencil test. (They test each quarter on the computer through ClassScape assessments but their end of year test is paper/pencil and they have to bubble it all....) Anywho, one standard that my students are still need practice with is RL.3.9 so I whipped up this little graphic organizer to help them compare and contrast two stories. You can grab it for free at my TPT store (just click on the pic!) 5. Finally, I just have to praise the Lord for how he's working in my son's life! Last night he was acting up alot (nothing major, just typical little boy stuff) and I was talking to my hubby later about whether he seems to really understand repentance or not because usually we have to tell him to ask for forgiveness in his prayers. Well, we pray every morning together at his school and this morning his prayer was simple but perfect. He said, "Dear God, please forgive me of my sins. Thank you for giving me a fresh start today!" Remember y'all that you are forgiven! Enjoy your weekend friends!

I love to use this Student Self-Reflection assessment the week before conferences so that I can use this as a lead in to conversations at Parent Teacher conferences. Seeing their child write about their strengths and weaknesses in their own words is always a genuinely eye-opening experience and great conversation starter. Students reflect on their academic & behavioral strengths in order to better understand themselves as a learner. JUST ADDED: Side-by-Side Reflection where the teacher completes one side and student completes the second side. I recommend folding the paper in half and let student do their side first! This is a student self reflection form for elementary (1st grade, 2nd grade, 3rd grade, 4th grade or 5th grade). This Self Reflection Evaluation is also available in my Conference Forms Bundle.
