These little Halloween Cuties will need a little more embellishment and stamping before we make them for a class, but I love this look with the Give it a Whirl Dies! I colored the kitty by stamping with the Basic Gray Ink pad and used the Light Flirty Flamingo Stampin' Blend marker to remove the grey on the cat's ears. Highland Heather for the ghost, sentiment and ribbon sparked up the Halloween look. For this card I wanted to use several stamp sets to answer the Fill In The Blank question, "Life Is...." made with the Playful Alphabet. First I used the Measure of Love set to create a bowl of cherries. Then, I made a Peachy peach with the Sweet as a Peach Stamp Set by omitting the Have a (peachy) day portion of that sentiment with my marker. Then I left out the LIFE IS portion of the Flowers of Friendship stamp set's sentiment to create the "Better with Friends Like You" answer. Hello and welcome to the fourth day of the Papertrey Ink August Countdown and the first Design Team group post. Today's post is all about the new Halloween sets... Mr. Bones, Happy Haunting & Tremendous Treats: Halloween. I've got a lot to share with you today... 1 tag, 2 treat wrap and 4 cards. So let me get started... First up... Mr. Bones, by Heather Nichols. I've combined this set with my Spider Web Die Trio and used the small and medium sizes to impress webs into a Rustic White cardstock panel. Then stamped the panel with a Mr. Bones sentiment and attached it over two types of Orange Zest pattern paper. Die cut, stamped and attached the cute spider. Up next... the tag, using this adorable skeleton image. I forgot to include an original shot of this skeleton, but I wanted a bit of movement from his arms. Here's how: I die cut and stamped two skeletons and then trimmed the arms above and below the elbow joints. With a couple of mini brad handy for reassembly. I attached the skeleton (with the arms trimmed below the joint) directly to the tag and kept the arms (trimmed above the joint) for attaching. Placed the arms in the desired position and then, using a piercing tool, I was able to pierce a hole through all layers and held everything together with the mini brads. Finished the card off with a heat embossed sentiment. Onto the second set... Happy Haunting, by Melissa Bickford. An adorable build your own monster set. I began this card by masking and stamping a row of ghoulish ghost in a color combo of Orange Zest, Berry Sorbet & Melon Berry. Trimmed the edge and finished the card off with a sentiment. Next... the treat wrap. Thes little packages were die cut using the Lunchbox Note Die from Royal Velvet, Orange Zest and True Black cardstock. Stamped each one with the monster outline and heat embossed with clear embossing powder to create ghostly figures. The inside features a mini die cut web, using the Spider Web Die Trio, folded over a candy filled glassine bag. I fix the bag into place with a bit of score tape. The third and final set for today... Tremendous Treats: Halloween, by Nichole Heady. For this card I chose to work with the spider image, I stamped him three times onto Raspberry Fizz, Summer Sunrise and Simply Chartreuse pattern papers. Stamped the spider again, this time onto rustic white cardstock and colored (using Copic Markers) the heads to coordinate with the pattern papers. Strung twine spider webs (using the technique featured here), attached the spiders and finished the card off with a sentiment. Here's A Note: The twine used is actually cream colored crochet thread and I've had the same role for almost two years now. In case your wondering, you should be able to find your own at your local craft store. Last, but definitely not least... my favorite card of the day. Using the Take Three Die, I cut six squares and embellished each one with either an image or die cut web. Then finished the card off with brads and a sentiment. Well, there you have it. I hope you've enjoyed! Just remember that all of these sets will be available for purchase beginning August 15, at Papertrey Ink. Now, be sure to see what the rest of the Papertrey Ink design team has in store for you today...

Hi all! Today I have a Sizzix tutorial which I can finally share with you. It was a birthday gift to my sister, so I had to wait for her birthday before sharing it. I made a wrapped journal with lots of texture and some pretty flowers, using Eileen Hull's Book Club Chapter 2 collection. The journal can easily be customized to fit any theme. The wrapped journal is a nice and chunky size (4.7 x 5.1 in folded), and perfect as a gift. Start by die cutting the Wrapped Journal from mat board, placing the Floral Cutouts to the far right on the Wrapped Journal die, where there is a very useful space for Movers & Shapers dies. This step cuts a pretty flower border, in just one go. Use this sandwich: Extended Cutting Pad, die facing up, mat board, second Extended Cutting Pad. This is an XL die, but fits perfectly in the ordinary Big Shot or Vagabond. The Scoreboards dies cut and score the mat board. Carefully, fold slightly along the score lines, to prepare the mat board. I wanted to create almost the look of leather and decided to use tissue paper. Stamp a piece of Tim Holtz Plain Collage Paper with his Halftone stamp. Make the paper slightly longer than the journal. Crumble the tissue paper up. Adhere to the mat board with Matte Medium - one layer below and one above. Make sure to add crinkles to the tissue paper. If you want less texture, adhere it flat instead. Use a needle tool to remove the tissue from the flowers and holes. Paint with Distress Paint. I used three shades of blue/turqouise. When the paint is dry, dry brush a little Ground Espresso on the cover, to increase the texture and give it a worn look. Dry brush silver paint, to make the cover shine. The Flowers & Leaves Journaling Cards die set die is so versatile and gives you many gorgeous flower and leaves in just one go. I only used the flower one. I die cut a whole bunch, from: vellum, cream paper, sticky-back canvas and silver Deco Sheet. Adhere the latter two to paper before die cutting. Ink the flowers with Distress Inks. Mist them with Wendy Vecchi Pearl Mica Spray for gorgeous shine. Use the Sizzix Paper Sculpting kit to shape the flowers. This gives them life. Layer the flowers and glue them together, or use a brad. I have leftover flowers for future projects too. The wrapped journal can be bound in different ways. I used an elastic string. For the inside pages, I used a whole bunch of patterned papers, mainly by Prima, mixing neutral and more patterend papers. Cut papers for the inserts about 7.7 x 4.7 in (19.5 x 12 cm) and fold in half. Arrange into four signatures. The amount of papers in each signature depends on the thickness of your paper. I used five sheets and stitched down the centers. You can also leave them lose or use stapels. Tuck the signatures under the elastic cords. It is easy to remove and change the order of the signatures for the recipient. I tied a piece of lace around the journal as a closure and glued it to the spine. I also tied two blue beads to the elastic cords. I added a piece of silver Deco Sheet under the flowers. Glue the dimensional flowers to the cover. I like the mix of materials in the flowers. I used a die cut word from Eileen's Floral Arch and Words set, as a title for the journal. The Wrapped Journal is very chunky and feels nice to the touch. You can fold the top flaps both ways, but since I wanted the die cut flower border to show, this was the best way for this journal. If you have a look at my first wrapped journal, you'll see that I folded the cover the other way around there. The brown and silver dry brushing adds a nice texture to the cover. You can also embellish the back, but I decided to keep it plain. In my first wrapped journal, I used only cream papers, but this one was meant for both photos, ephemera and notes, and I thought patterned papers would be fun. Here's a look at the journal from the top. I used a mix of papers, including some baby themed papers, since I was planning that my sister would use the journal to collect photos and memories for her baby. Thank you so much for looking at this post and I hope it inspired you to make some journals. Happy crafting!
I am still on vacation (and loving it), but I have been doing a lot of pondering at the end of this year. One of my resolutions for 2010 is to spend more time with my journal. I am able to understand myself and keep track of the status of my heart when I take the time to write it down. Etsy has some beautiful journals that I have had my eyes on. I hope to finish up the one I have been using this year and start a brand new one soon. Consider either starting a journal or making more visits to it's pages with the new year on it's way. Hello Everyone, it's been a fabulous week here at the Brown household with Ken's birthday Thursday and our 40th wedding anniversary on the same day. Last night we celebrated with the children and grand children having a lovely meal out together and tonight we celebrate with a few friends and neighbours by having a summer garden BBQ. We just hope it doesn't rain after all the wonderful hot sunny weather we had in July. Today I thought I would share four altered playing cards that I have been making (you can seer the previous 4 here that I made in March if you haven’t caught up with them yet) Although I followed the ideas and techniques from Stephanie Ackerman, I am using images and collage pieces of my own. I save quotes and make my own sheets and print out to use in albums, on cards and mixed media projects. I won’t share the process steps in respect for Stephanie and her online class, but suffice to say I am enjoying making these and having fun exploring some mixed media techniques. Thanks for taking the time to stop by and I hope you have a wonderful weekend. hugs {brenda} xx
