\"The professional schools will resume their professional responsibilities just to the degree that they can discover a science of design, a body of intellectually tough, partly formalizable, partly empirical teachable doctrine about the design process. \" [H.A. Simon, 1968} Design is aimed at the transformation or translation of a specification or high- level description into a description in terms of some real-world primitives. As such it involves the removal of the uncertainty about the way in which a required system can be realized. To optimally support the design of systems, we must look at the design process as a whole and at the strong relationship that exists between a designer, the applied design method, the required design tools and the ways in which designs can be expressed. This book focuses on that relationship. The application field we are concerned with is the design of systems in which the communication between system elements is a major design feature. Examples of such communicating systems are: communication protocols, telephone exchange control systems, process control systems, highly modular systems, embedded software, interactive systems, and VLSI systems. In summary, we are concerned with systems in which concurrency plays a major role (concurrency defines the mutual relationship between the activities in the different parts of a system or within a collection of systems).

Examples how a provider of telephone services is able to identify customers who run a dialler or how a company is able to identify who mainly answers inbound calls illustrate a new approach to cluster analysis. It has been assumed that the empirical distribution function is appropriate for classifying behaviour of telephone subscribers. Therefore its suitability and possible alternatives are studied. Since no standard function for computing the dissimilarity matrices were available, a function has been designed in the programming language C that neither limits the size of the target data nor the length of the dissimilarity matrix. The clustering methods from Kaufmann and Rousseeuw are used which accepts a dissimilarity matrix as input. The use of the method is clearly exemplified within the scope of the KDD process (knowledge discovery in databases). Moreover, a very simple example is given which emphasis that the method is capable of being applied to very different fields.
WHY: Sponges were the first animals to evolve and they play a key role in the Coral Reef ecosystem. Understanding the scientific evidence to justify the above claims is important in understanding evolution and common ancestry. HS-LS4-1 - Communicate scientific information that common ancestry and biological evolution are supported by multiple lines of empirical evidence HOW: Students will watch videos, read articles and visit 8 stations to describe Phylum Porifera. Each station includes student handout, instructions and print-outs. This lesson should take around two 70 minute class periods, modify as needed. WHAT: Student notebooks (INB pages), digital devices, videos, article links, Porifera Station materials.

\"An Alternative Way of Managing Health & Safety\" offers the theoretical frame of a generic H&S-MS. It represents a step forward from previous theoretical and empirical work (e.g. Pérezgonzález, 2005a, b): it proposes a theoretical formulation of a generic H&S-MS, it offers clear graphic lines of influence of the different components in the H&S-MS on organisational health and safety, and it reviews and updates Pérezgonzález's theoretical and graphical model. This book is a \"Knowledge Management\" edition. The reader purchases the original contents with the main ideas underscored/underlined, and the essential ideas highlighted. The downloadable version is color-coded, as are the most relevant illustrations. A normal edition can be found as Pérezgonzález, JD (2005). An Alternative Way of Managing Health & Safety. Love it or hate it, but most of the numerous versions of ACAAN (Any Card At Any Number) out there end up in the same ball park - 'look what I can do' or 'I manipulated your choices without your knowledge or simply as a coincidence.' THE EMPIRICAL ACAAN drifts from all of that. Here is an ACAAN that enables people to connect to each other. An ACAAN that is not about you, but is instead about the audience -- with practically no sleight involved! What's great is that about 70% of the time, you'll have a hands-off/clean ACAAN. For the other 30% of the time, you'll have to do something logical that is covered by the presentation to make it look like a hands-off ACAAN. It involves 3 participants. The first names the number, the second names the value, and the third names the suit. The cards are dealt and, just the way it should be, their named card lies at the named number. Features: Examinable deck (can be left with them as a souvenir) Easy to learn (you can perform this within 20 minutes) 70% of the time, you'll seemingly have a HANDS OFF/CLEAN ACAAN This download comes with a video file for a better explanation of certain elements. Honest Notes: There is a simple sleight involved that gets done ONLY ONCE, way before the trick truly begins. This involves some first grader's mathematics (subtracting a single digit from another single digit), and you get a full 10-second pause to do so, covered under the presentation. Pages: 15 pagesVideo: 17 minutesDownload and learn THE EMPIRICAL ACAAN.

What are some ways that we can gauge vocabulary development in the content areas? In this article, the authors explain how the intricacies of word knowledge make assessment difficult, particularly with content area vocabulary. They suggest ways to improve assessments that more precisely track students' vocabulary growth across the curriculum, including English language learners.
Bronze Vitruvian Universal Man by DaVinci. Leonardo DaVinci tended to compensate for his lack of an education in the classical sense with an excess of empirical studies. The most famous of these is the Vitruvian Man so called because it is based on a description of the ideal human proportions by Roman architect Vitruvius (around 85-20 BC) The study of ideal proportions illustrates the mingling of art and science during the Renaissance perfectly. Da Vinci viewed the human body as a reflection of the universe. He therefore referred to his anatomical studies as cosmografia del minor mondo. A popular though unproven theory is that Da Vinci saw the circle as the domain of human emotion whereas the square symbolized matter. Part of the highly collectible Parastone Mouseion 3D Collectiondesigned in Europe to adapt famous paintings into three-dimensional form. Includes color picture of the original artwork by Leonardo DaVinci and a description in multiple languages. The art of casting is thousands of years old: Terracottas, Bronzes and ancient glass were cast from molds. Closer to our time in the mid 18th century coinciding with the search for new artistic styles which took inspiration from the roots of classic art (neoclassicism) and the discovery of Herculaneum in 1738 and Pompeii in 1748, archaeological reproductions reappeared all over Europe. As a result of French expeditions to Egypt during the nineteenth century, a casting facility was set up next to the Louvre Museum where many important archaeological pieces from ancient Egypt were reproduced. Following the example of the Louvre, other leading European museums began to reproduce some of the masterpieces in their collections thus initiating a trend that continues until today. Art Reproduction Craftsmanship: For the making of art reproductions, masterpieces have been chosen from the best museums all over the world, The Louvre, The British Museum, The National Museum of Athens, The Egyptian Museum Cairo, The New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. We only use materials and techniques that can achieve the best quality in reproducing original works of art to obtain very fine pieces, up to the last detail. Our sculptures are cast in a variety of mediums: Bonded Stone, Polyresins, and Bronze. The finish of each reproduction, is always hand-made and showing craftsmanship and historical sense, is the work of an artisan. It is the task to present to the people of today the legacy of those ancient civilizations with all the beauty and mystery of our ancestors again in front of our eyes and at the reach of our hands. There is several steps that must be taken before a museum reproduction sculpture can be made. Most of our items are original artworks created by our sculptors, carved out of clay, stone, or wood. Once the original is carved, a mold is made, usually out of silicon. Crushed stone in a liquid resin medium is poured into a silicon mold where it solidifies into a hard stone that reproduces all the detail and texture of the original. All the finishes are done by hand. Many finishes include color detailing, a labor intensive process where colors are applied with small brushes by our skilled artisans. There is an important family of semantic notions that are applied to thoughts and to the conceptual constituents of thoughts--as when one says that the thought that the Universe is expanding is true. Christopher Hill presents a theory of the content of such notions. That theory is largely deflationary in spirit. It represents a broad range of semantic notions free from substantive metaphysical and empirical presuppositions. He also explains the relationship of mirroring or semantic correspondence linking thoughts to reality.
About The Artwork "Innocent Icarus”is a work that blends ancient and contemporary mythologies. The universal and moral lesson of man’s hubris is exemplified by Icarus who ignores the sage advice of his father to not fly too close to the sun with his wax wings and as a result fatally plummets to his death. The contemporary ‘Icarus’ figure in this sculpture is positioned similarly to “Falling Man”—the infamous photograph of the 9-11 Twin Towers employee who tragically jumped to escape the burning tower. To some, he is simply an innocent who was in the wrong place and time. To others, his place of work--the iconic symbol of power and hubris, was enough to consider him guilty by association thus inadvertently allowing him in a role in his own demise! But to me it is to be human to be curious, to be ambitious, to reach. At times we all ignore wisdom to discover our limits and boundaries, unaware of the role we play in our own and others' history. We are all innocent Icaruses! Empirical process techniques for independent data have been used for many years in statistics and probability theory. This work gives an introduction to a new theory of empirical process techniques --- treating dependent data --- which has so far been scattered widely in the statistical and probabilistic literature, and surveys the most recent developments in various related fields. To date this book is the only comprehensive treatment of the topic in book literature. It is an ideal introductory text that will serve as a reference or resource for classroom use.
