A LOOK AT LEXILES and Text Complexity While delivering PD yesterday, a teacher asked me, "What's a Lexile?" I wanted to say, "where have you been?" But the reality is--I commend her for not being afraid to ask what we think is such a basic question. We forget that some people have been so busy working in the trenches that they haven't been able to keep up. (They've been too busy administering tests, Student Learning Objective assessments, state exams and more.) So, listed below are the basics of LEXILES 101. Essential understandings: The Common Core has defined where "college and career ready" (CCR) students should be reading and it's a 1450 Lexile. Therefore, they scaffolded in reverse levels to graduate students at the appropriate level. These Lexile levels are more difficult than where typical students are reading. Lexile is an algorithm. It is a mathematical assessment of a linguistic product. Lexiles (and other readability statistics) are fallible. (For instance, it is not valid for prose or drama and is less valid for fiction in 1000+ Lexile range.) The parent organization to the CCSS, (CCSSO formally called the Governor’s convention) recently released a white paper verifying the validity of text complexity. Therefore, we have to pay attention to this essential shift to embrace "rigor" in reading. To read the recent white paper from the Council of Chief State School Officers click here. This article compares a number of algorithms and the summarizes text complexity for the CCSS. Text complexity formulas were meant for instructional purposes. Pleasure reading should be allowed at any level and this is validated in the Common Core, Appendix A, page 9, paragraph 1: It is very interesting, to compare the variables used among the six different "approved" complexity measures. Metametrics (Lexile) uses the simplest measure of only word count and sentence length. (Lexile.com provides a search tool for books, but many are missing.) Other companies including Accelerated Reader (ATOS) and Pearson, DRP, etc... add additional measures of review such as punctuation, a 100,000-word vocabulary match, and more. Therefore, we would conclude that the ratings of the latter companies would be more accurate picture of complexity and appropriateness. This quote from page 17 of the white paper puts it diplomatically: "There is no clear "gold standard" measure of text difficulty against which to compare the various metrics. Instead, we compared each metric against various reference measures based on grade level and student comprehension data for five sets of passages gathered for the study. These are defined and discussed in the sections following. Although there are limitations in the validity of these indicators as measures of text difficulty, the variety in their construction allows us to observe the robustness of the metrics and consider how different reference measures might affect their performance." Be sure to note that Microsoft Word's Flesch-Kincaid measure has also been proven valid. This picture shows how to "turn on" readability statistics within Word: Readability statistics, is only one characteristic to examine for instructional materials. Please see the charts below to identify correct grade levels and Lexiles - or level of complexity. The Common Core has asked teachers to evaluate classroom materials for quality as well as quantity. Complexity is only one piece of the puzzle. In addition, a teacher, librarian, or educator, has to pay attention to: • Complexity - Lexile, vocabulary • Qualitative measures -value • Reader and the task -is there enough in the text to foster good discussion, value -added assignments, and begin a knowledge exploration. How can I use this novel or passage to foster critical thinking skills? Every reading program (F and P, AR, Reading Counts, etc.) uses as its baseline, some metric to measure difficulty or "readability". As summer winds down, I reflect on what I've learned this summer through the workshops I've attended, the books I've read, and all the great conversations I've had with professionals. This quote has had me thinking quite a bit. It comes from Disruptive Thinking: Why How We Read Matters by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst. What they state is absolutely true. Students need to find relevance in what they are doing right now. So let's backtrack a little... I have always been about purpose. I look at what I'm teaching and ensure that what we are doing serves a purpose. And I share that with students. Understanding why we are doing something is very important to me. Interest is also imperative. I have always tried to make sure that I am matching the books I choose to the interest of my students. Interest surveys, conversations, and book selection time have always been informative to me. But relevance. This is something much deeper. It is something you are connected to. It is something that MATTERS. Well...and when I think about it...do I really read anything that isn't relevant to me? Nope. Not really. So what do I do now? I've been thinking a lot about it and my first step is to just ask my first graders. What issues or problems matter to you? So I added it to my interest survey (click to grab for free): From there...I will need to get creative. They are new readers. And some of them may share some big issues and some students may not. But I need to be prepared to help them make connections to what matters to them and the books we are reading. And I am up for the challenge because Beers and Probst state that: "If they are to undertake anything significant in the future, it will be because they have learned the importance of significant work early on in their schooling." This statement says a lot. We need our students out there doing significant work. We need them to have a voice. So we need to help them find that voice...even at a young age. Em

Do you ever call someone when you know they are not able to answer the phone, but you are so excited about something that you take the chance that for some crazy reason they will answer?! That was me today, calling my friend Dara while she was clearly still teaching. I NEEDED to tell someone about the app I discovered while I was getting materials ready for tutoring. I needed to tell someone who would appreciate how cool this app really is! Meet the Record of Reading app. Here's what you need to know about it: 1. It's free. So that's reason enough to at least download it on your iPhone or iPad. 2. It was created by Clemson University. 3. It can be used with any leveled reading text or running record assessment. 4. It's simple, straightforward and user-friendly. 5. It saves you time (more time for blogging and Pinterest!) 6. It encourages paperless, organized assessment data. 7. You can email the results instantly to yourself, parents, other teachers, etc. 8. It audio records the students as they read, making it easy to go back, listen and analyze errors. 9. It automatically calculates the words-per-minute score. 10. It automatically determines whether the text was frustrational, instructional or independent. The screens starts blank and you can fill in the student information and the information that you have about the passage- the running word count (RW), the lexile score and the running record or Fountas and Pinnell level (if that's what you are using). I use the Pearson Critical Reading Inventory so the only information I put in is the running word count and the lexile score. If you are unsure of how to convert your passages- this is a helpful conversion chart that includes most popular reading level correlations. Once the child begins to read, you hit the red record button. I keep tallies of the errors as they occur, and make note of anything I want to revisit. The nice thing about having the voice recording as they read is that if you miss an error or you want to analyze the errors, you can listen to it over and over again. After he or she is done and the recording has stopped, you click on the E or SC column to begin counting errors and self-corrections. If you are unfamiliar with running records, you can learn more about how to administer it and analyze errors here. The app automatically calculates the words-per-minute, the accuracy rate and the ratio of self-corrections to errors. There is an area where you can add notes and observations about the reading, and select a fluency score from 1-4. After you are finished, you can save the record and create a folder for that child. My favorite feature is that you can email the record as a .pdf or a .jpg! How cool is that?! I love the idea of going paperless and keeping .pdf versions of running records in folders for each of my students. I also love the possibility of playing the recording of a passage to a parent at a conference. Technology never ceases to amaze me and Apple really means it when they say "There's an app for that!"
