Looking for an introductory First Grade Self Control Activity? Your students will love this fun story and craft for practice!
I first used this craft as part of an “All About Me” themed session where we also made a fingerpainted house and created some fantastic self portraits on the painting table! It's really simple idea and craft but very often the most simple ideas are the best! It was such a popular craft for younger children that it’s one I’ve taken out and about again and again. Kids love to make their whole family so it’s worth printing out quite a few extra templates – and it’s a craft that can be used as a great learning tool for colours, families and body parts as well as exploring different textures. Older kids can also use it as a scissor practice exercise! This is what you’ll need Stiff a4 card Glue Pens or crayons A box of different materials – fabric, card, papers, wool, tissue…….. Firstly, print out the A4 template below onto card – like I say it’s a good idea to print out a few! You should hopefully be able to copy and paste this template and then resize it if needed - if not then you can download templates elsewhere or just draw your own person! Let your child get creative with the template, materials and glue – dress it, colour it in, add hair (or not!). You can either leave the person as he/she is on the card – or try cutting it out to make a cardboard doll!

In order to get ahead of the game, I decided to redesign our fall and spring checklists for Pre-K. Our old format led parents to believe we just filled in the information ourselves and didn't ask the students the information. So this time I chose to include the words "I can." Hopefully that will let them know that their child identified the information. If you would like a copy, click here. Spring Checklist Fall Checklist We use work sampling online to assess our students. If you are not familiar with this format, it has 54 standards that have to be evaluated on students over a 18 week period. I always find myself stressed at the end looking for documentation for these checklist items. We do all of the things more than once but each student cannot have the same documentation for the same area. It has to be child specific. So in order to keep me on top of things I took the standards and broke them down for the beginning of the year. I am hoping this will help me gather data on all students through pictures, work samples, or matrices in that month. Of course, I will gather documentation on these more than once but this will help me make sure I have at least one form of documentation by rating time.

Last year I saw a great post from Heidi at Heidi Songs about using her sight word videos with white boards. It was a big hit with my kiddos last year and today I decided we were ready to try it with this group. They LOVED it! It's a super simple activity that gets them connecting with the videos in a whole new way. Total engagement......very little effort. Win-win! To keep them from writing/ erasing/ writing/ erasing.....you get the idea....I simply didn't give them an eraser and told them not to erase with their fingers. We wrote each word one time and we kept going until our boards were full. That gave us about 13-15 songs which was a full 20 minute activity. They were sad when it was done! I gave them a tissue when we were done to erase really quick (handing out erasers drives me crazy, a quick tissue for each pair makes for fast clean up). Here is a video example from last year. If you don't own the videos you can get them HERE. I also have the alphabet videos which we use at the beginning of the year. There are a ton of engaging videos to get you singing and moving in your classroom. We love the math videos too! We can't get enough of Heidi Songs in our classroom! How do you mix things up in your classroom? If you want to remember to check out Heidisongs save this post for later!
