On everyone's blogs I keep reading about how short weeks are the longest. I COULDN'T AGREE MORE! At first it seemed to go ok...then I was in lots of meetings. The meetings seemed to make the week longer. They were all union related (I'm the building rep). And I love helping my colleagues out. I will start my week tomorrow with a continuation of meetings from last week. My students were excellent though! OH and I forgot...we spent the first two days back from a 3 day weekend taking Discovery Assessments. BLAH. More productively the students created awesome adjective illustrations! We brainstormed adjectives as a class and made a huge list on the board. Then I pulled popsicle sticks for students to choose what word they wanted. As they chose their word, they put a check mark next to it...so we had no repeats. I showed an example of expectations on the projector... Students had to show how their word would look. I had "hot" so made mine wood on the bottom part of the word and fire burning the wood at the top to show "hot". Then the students had to use the adjective properly in a sentence below the word. Here's my example...HOT teeny-tiny was made by a student...look at the teeny-tiny bugs Purple was designed by a student who chose to use different shades of purple. Obese looks like an OBESE word! The students LOVED doing this and asked BEGGED to complete seconds! I caught some of them making new words during indoor recess! Another little activity we completed was about peRIMeter. I saw something on Pinterest about doing the area of names...I thought I'd do the peRIMeter... If any of you are wondering why the heck I am capitalizing RIM in perimeter...It's how we write it in our classroom....to remember that the perimeter is RIM of something....it helps. I first showed an example of my daughter's name on the Elmo/Projector. I was strict about my rules/expectations. The students were NOT allowed to cut a square in half (I explained and showed them with post-its that it wouldn't measure the same). They had to complete each letter of their first name...find the peRIMeter of each letter...add all the letters up for a TOTAL peRIMeter of their name! At first they WHINED about "I can't make an N"..."I can't get a D to work"... I told them to stop their whining...literally and showed them some hints on the board...here's how they turned out... Christopher needed 2 pieces of grid paper taped together for his extra long name! Kelsie had a difficult time with the K, but it came out great! I told students to get creative! I'd do this again next year! They didn't finish in the time I gave them, but they diligently worked on it between other assignments. They were excited to pull it out and work on it! This week we will be working on coordinate grids...then on to Multiplication! Have a great week!
Something you may quickly start to see with me is that I love weekly layouts! I have a different weekly layout for different types of weeks depending on how busy I am or how much time I want to spend setting up the weekly layout. With that in mind here is another weekly layout and template! If you would like to see how I set up this spread in my bullet journal I have included the template at the bottom of the post. The template is designed around the Leuchtturm1917 A5 dot grid as this is the notebook I use. This is a great weekly layout if you need a quick spread that has a place to see your week ahead at a glance and in a little more detail than your monthly layout. I come back to this weekly set up time and time again, it's simple but has enough space for everything I need. There are three main sections to this weekly layout; a quick view of the week ahead, a place to jot down those tasks you want to complete but not necessarily on a specific day and a space for any notes! Week overview The main aspect of this spread is the weekly view. The left side of the spread is dedicated solely to this and is my saviour on a Sunday evening when I sit down to tackle what I hope to achieve in the week ahead. The daily boxes are big enough to hold upcoming events and any day specific tasks. With a goals section encouraging me to define my priorities I can get to work on planning what I need to do, and when, during the week ahead. Now the coloured in tasks! I used to be colour code obsessed, colour coding everything to the point where I had so many colours I didn't know what colour was what anymore! So for my bullet journal I have kept to my plan and have barely colour coded anything. Instead, for this layout, at the end of each day I colour in all the completed tasks with any colour I fancy. I do this as it makes for quick reference when I turn to this page to plan my daily log as I can quickly see the day I am on as it will be the first set of task boxes with no colour, and well, because I love adding colour to the page - I just can't help it! Tasks On the right of the page there is a tasks section. I use this to jot down any tasks that come up throughout the week that need to be completed but are not necessarily time sensitive. I tend to pick from these when I am planning my daily logs depending on how much spare time I expect to have during the day. Notes Finally, a notes section! I use this box to jot down anything that I need to keep in mind or need reminding of. This could be events that are happing at the beginning of next week so I am not surprised on Sunday that I have an appointment for something first thing Monday morning! I also use this section to note down anything that doesn't really have a place anywhere else. I hope you found this helpful in some way. For anyone interested I have the layout of this spread for a Leuchtturn1917 A5 dot grid notebook below. Template
Help your students record all letters of the alphabet with this simple grid. Students will write a different letter of the alphabet in each grid of the chart. Students will be signaled to go back and find any missing letters if they have boxes remaining at the end of the activity. For a fun twist, I often allow students to add alphabet stickers or foam shapes after they have printed letters in each box. Click the image below to hop over to my TpT store to grab your freebie!

I love having the kids do personalized work at the beginning of each school year-- and typically I start out with some sort of self-portrait. Well, 10 years of doing that for seven classes each day for a week is really mundane, so I decided to switch it up this year. With my third graders I am doing these "identity grids" and they love them! We start out with a 12"x12" sheet of paper and fold it into 16 squares. We talk about identities. The most obvious part of your identity is your name--so we write our names in "bubble letters" jumbled about through the paper. One letter per square. We then talk about other things that make us unique, that make us individuals--and brainstorm those ideas on the board (favorite holidays, foods, artists, hobbies, etc). They then draw a different symbol in each of the remaining squares. The above example is mine, but I can't wait for the kids to finish their so I can show you! They are all so colorful and unique...and I'm learning a little something new about each child! So fun!

This week's tangle is dedicated to "mcelroyfam" who commented on the last tangle. Good point - I mention Keeko, but don't say what it looks like. So here it is. Keeko is a very simple pattern, but it makes a perfect filler behind more complicated patterns. If you draw the lines fairly straight, it has a nice cross-hatching feel. If you curve the lines a little, it becomes more three dimensional - like a basket. I've noticed, in my classes, how differently each student draws this pattern. Some do tiny, tight lines that look like mesh or screen. Others do large, almost cartoony, curved lines that look like woven, puffy yarn... so experiment with size and line thickness.

Manipulatives help make math and other learning activities fun for kids. The more play or game like the activity is, the more receptive the child may be. That is why, for my kids, I try to use a variety of fun manipulatives with counting cards. Like these button counting cards and manipulatives.
