endurable dime: Is there a tag for "famous" graves? Have any of you taken a shot of a "famous" grave, and if so, did you travel there to take a picture or do you have any "famous" graves in your local cemeteries? I just added 3 (I'll add a fourth once it turns midnight if it lets me) pictures of Cody Holp's tombstone. As the description says, he went to my high school and died tragically in the Bluffton University bus accident. He was a few years behind me (his brother was in my grade) and I went to a very small school where you knew everyone. And if you weren't on personal terms with people, you knew what they were like. Cody was a nice guy, Prom King, star baseball player. The saddest thing is that this plot was bought, I believe, for his grandparents, and they ended up burying their grandson there. Whenever we drive past the cemetery, 9 times out of 10, there is someone out there, either his mom or another relative or a high school student. Normally I dislike a bunch of "crap" being left on the tombstone, but it's quite touching here. Someone monitors it so it won't get thrown away, and there are even lights on his grave. On another sad note, 5 students/former students were killed from my high school in this past school year. When you go to a high school with less than 100 kids per grade level, that's a tremendous loss, and so they all have greatly affected the students there. On a completely different note, I also have some photos of "famous" administrators and Miami University professors, but they're really only famous concerning the school, and not from a tragic accident like Cody's grave unfortunately was.

Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris is probably one of the greatest collections of (dead) human talent in the world. Père Lachaise is claimed to be the most visited graveyard in the world and with so many famous people interred there it may well be true. Posted at the entrances are maps pointing visitors towards the most famous graves but on every path there are monuments which make you stop and stare. It might seem a bit of a macabre way to spend an afternoon but because there are so many famous tombs, and such artistry in the graves, that it becomes something like a visit to a museum. Here are ten of the most famous graves in Père Lachaise and the traditions which they have inspired.

Ogni mattina, sotto il sole d'estate e sulla neve d'inverno, un fiore fresco viene deposto sulla tomba di Caroline Christine Walter. Caroline Walter e la sua amata sorella maggiore Selma si trasferirono a vivere con la nonna a Friburgo dopo la morte dei loro genitori. Caroline frequentò una scuola femminile e all'età di 16 anni la sua bellezza le aveva già assicurato un certo numero di ammiratori. Quando sua sorella si sposò, Caroline fu felice di andare a vivere con lei e suo marito. All'inizio dell'estate del 1867, poco prima di compiere 17 anni, Caroline contrasse la tubercolosi e morì poche settimane dopo. Sua sorella Selma volle commemorarla chiedendo ad uno scultore di realizzare una tomba che riproducesse le sembianze della sorella. La statua raffigura Caroline proprio come se si fosse addormentata nel suo letto leggendo un libro. La tomba fu situata contro una delle pareti esterne del cimitero di Alter Friedhof, che aveva già più di 200 anni. Era un ambiente tranquillo, reso ancor più sereno dalla bella tomba della ragazza che dormiva. Fu subito dopo la scomparsa di Caroline, quando i fiori deposti sulla sua tomba il giorno del funerale stavano appassendo, che sua sorella cominciò a notare che ogni qualvolta andava a far visita a Caroline, c'era sempre un fiore fresco sulla tomba. Passarono i mesi, e poi gli anni, e ancora nessuno aveva scoperto chi lasciava i fiori. I custodi del cimitero non seppero fornire alcun indizio, ma forse avevano promesso di mantenere il segreto. Caroline non aveva mai accennato a Selma di un giovane uomo in particolare, però le leggende abbondano. La più comune è quella che sostiene che i fiori venissero portati da uno dei tutori di Caroline, che si era innamorato di lei e passò a trovarla per il resto della sua vita. Ma, anche se fosse vissuto fino a cent'anni, sarebbe morto più di mezzo secolo fa. Ha lasciato istruzioni alle generazioni future di portare avanti la tradizione? Oggi, solo un po 'di luce del sole filtra attraverso i fitti rami degli alberi sulla testa di Caroline, il muschio è cresciuto ovunque dove lei dorme, ma ogni mattina, da quel fatidico giorno del 1867, un fresco fiore sboccia sulla sua tomba.
