Read to Self Read with Someone Word Work Listen to Reading Read with a Teacher/Teacher Time Word Work is still my work in progress, so look for updates to this post as I continue to grow and add to the effectiveness of this choice :) For now, though, I will give a brief overview of how it goes in my class. First, the anchor chart of expectations: All students have five independent spelling words (aside from the class list of words) that they work on each week. These are kept in their spelling folder (I'll blog about this after I get some pics) and include third grade words from the district and list of 1200 high-frequency words from Rebecca Sitton. Students are responsible for these five words and have the chance to practice them, as well as class list words during Word Work time. Students have a variety of ways to practice these words: White Boards- (a class FAVORITE!)- they can practice cursive, print, and/or sentences Stamps- I purchased several of these sets and ink pads in multiple colors (be sure they are washable!) and this is a close second favorite Sign Language- kids will work with a partner using these sheets to help and try to guess the words Secret Code Spelling- each letter is worth its place in the alphabet (a=1, b=2, c=3, etc.) and kids will work to spell out their words in numbers, then switch with a partner and decode (This is available as a freebie HERE.) Scrabble Tiles- I post more info about this center HERE. Money Words- similar to secret code, but each letter is worth a coin amount. I blog more about this center HERE. I am always on the lookout to add more individual spelling practice activities. Also, we don't have spelling words every week (short weeks, in particular), but we do Daily 5 every day, so what were we to do? Enter DonorsChoose.org!! (you can read more about my love of Donors Choose here) I found a wonderful product at Lakeshore Learning that covers all of these amazing word skills that I teach throughout the year, including: synonyms & antonyms context clues prefixes, suffixes & root words idioms similes & metaphors analogies and more! Their At-My-Desk Vocabulary Set was perfect- already assembled, quality pieces, directions card that is very easy for kids to understand (yay!), and full of concepts that always use extra practicing :) The price was jaw-dropping a bit steep, so I applied to Donors Choose and ta-da! it became a part of our Word Work Center! Yippee! {happy dance} Seriously, donors have no idea how much they make my students' and my day! <3 Now, when kiddos feel like they have had enough practice with their words, they can go to our spinny activity center and choose an envelope to work with at their desk. They LOVE them! And the best part is that, while some of them are a once-and-done activity, most of them a student can do over and over! So that is my Word Work in a tiny nutshell. I have become a HUGE fan of using pattern blocks to teach fractions. As in, I will probably use them almost exclusively to teach different fractions concepts. Yeah, the love is that deep. It's so nice to show kids, in a way other than those overused fraction circles, how to manipulate fractions and it's much more challenging and engaging. I actually only pulled them out to use for finding equivalent fractions. We're now on day 18 of our fraction unit and we've used them for: - representing fractions - finding equivalent fractions - decomposing fractions into like denominators - decomposing fractions into unlike denominators - composing fractions in different ways - multiplying a fraction by a whole number - adding fractions - subtracting fractions - critical thinking - finding and proving math theories Who knew those little geometric shapes could be so useful, right? (We'll also be using them for geometry and angles soon) It's also been nice because, when paired with a really good math task question, the kids differentiate themselves and level out at their own stage of difficulty within the task. So enough talk, here's what we did with them. Finding Fractions On the board I wrote the following task question: "If this is equal to one whole, what would the other pieces represent?" Right away they were able to determine the red hexagons equaling 1/2, the blue rhombus equaling 1/3 and the green triangle equaling 1/6. That was where they got stumped. And therefore assumed the other pieces were impossible. I had them trace the pieces on paper and cut them out so they could better manipulate the pieces. Eventually they discovered a triangle fit on the orange square, as well as another triangle cut in half vertically with the pieces turned upside-down. This meant the square totaled 2/6. The cut-and-turn strategy got them thinking they could do the same to figure out the tan rhombus, which they did. One tan rhombus cut in half horizontally can fit together in a green triangle, so we determined they were both equal to 1/6. This led to a great conversation about how things can be different shapes but take up the same amount of space. We ended by drawing and writing in our Math Notebooks each shape and it's represented fraction.

Hello Everyone! So, bringing in groceries this morning, I caught my flip flop on the little step up from the garage, and fell hitting my head on the workbench! As I slowly got up, blood from a 2 inch gash above my eye was gushing everywhere! UGH! I am so clumsy! Not sure if I need stitches yet, but I'm keeping an "eye" on it!! (sorry-no pics!) Are you wondering why I shared all that? Well, I'm taking it as God's little nudge telling me that I don't need to go up to school today. I need to take a day and just sit on my couch!! :) It gave me time to just enjoy some quiet time. You know I'll be back up there tomorrow!! I want to be totally organized and ready!! During my quiet time, I redid my little classroom expectation sheet for both parents and the room. Setting classroom expectations can be as simple or complicated as you want. Mine is quite simple and self explanatory. Here's how I work it in my room for those of you who have asked! My kids each have a little library pocket taped inside their cubby- very discreet. In the pocket, they have three reminder sticks, green yellow, and red. (You can pick up these colored sticks at WalMart. ) After introducing all of our expectations, kids will know that (after verbal warning), if poor choices continue, I will ask for the green reminder stick. If behaviors continue, the yellow and then the red. You can see on the chart the consequences. Kids always have the opportunity to earn their reminder sticks back! I don't sign folders until the end of the day. We all make mistakes and should have the the chance to learn and grow and improve. Everyone gets all their sticks back to start a new day!
