Boltzmann's equation (or Boltzmann-like equations) appears extensively in such disparate fields as laser scattering, solid-state physics, nuclear transport, and beyond the conventional boundaries of physics and engineering, in the fields of cellular proliferation and automobile traffic flow. This introductory graduate-level course for students of physics and engineering offers detailed presentations of the basic modern theory of Boltzmann’s equation, including representative applications using both Boltzmann’s equation and the model Boltzmann equations developed within the text. It emphasizes physical aspects of the theory, and it represents a practical resource for researchers and other professionals. The problems following each chapter are intended as learning examples, and they frequently extend and generalize the text material. Additional editorial features include a historical introduction, references, and subject and author indexes. 1971 edition. thermodynamics; engineering; cellular proliferation; nuclear transport; disparate fields; dynamics; applied mathematics; advanced math; physics; advanced college level; mechanics; graduate level studies; resource for professionals and researchers; physical aspects; professional resource; equations and solutions; stochastics; applied science and mathematics; Boltzmann equation; Statistical mechanics; Statistical Thermodynamics; Binary collisions; moment method solutions

For the first time a Bachelor Degree graduate with a First Class Honours pass shares knowledge and experience with the student community in an effort to help more students graduate with First Class Honours, and raise the awareness of degree education. This book examines the mindset of a First Class student and highlights the strategies and techniques the author used to gain his First Class Honours degree. It will also inspire you to reach for new highs in your degree course and beyond. The student is guided in the process of producing outstanding coursework assessments using real assessment examples (many of which were marked in excess of 70%) which are accessed via the 1stAcademy website. All aspects are covered: essays, reports, preparing presentations, final projects, and exam revision techniques that work, even under exam pressure. The focus is to maintain consistency of marks throughout the degree course. Consistency in marks allows for a 'balance out' effect allowing the student latitude with weaker subjects. As the author says: \"It is not ability alone that determines your graduation grade; organisation and applied effort are of equal importance.\"

Out of Architecture is both a call to reassess the architecture profession and its education, and a toolkit for graduates and working architects to untangle their skills, passions, and value from traditional architectural practice and consider alternate pathways. Written by design professionals and expert career consultants, this book is informed by numerous client accounts as well as the authors' own stories and routes out of architecture. The initial chapters follow the narrative of a typical architecture training in the US, highlighting the many highs and lows, skills honed, and ultimately the huge disconnect that can occur between architectural education and practice. Subsequent chapters explore a disillusionment with the profession, unhealthy work cultures, mentorship, working with lead architects, toxic perfectionism, and the notion of a "calling." Authors then present the hopeful accounts of many architects who escaped a profession known for its grueling working conditions to find fulfilling, well-paying, creative jobs that better utilize the skills of architecture than the architectural profession itself. Written in a unique combination of storytelling and analysis, this patchwork of client and author stories makes for an immersive, provocative, and enjoyable read. A wide range of architecture students, graduates, educators, and professionals will recognize themselves within the pages of this book and find prompts to reassess their working practices, teaching styles, and the profession itself. It will be of particular value to those students skeptical of joining the architecture workforce, as well as those further along and considering a career change. 25 Line drawings, black and white

November/December 2023 If you can’t see it, you can’t be it. The importance of role models can’t be overestimated, especially for emerging makers. As a new graduate over thirty years ago, I was fortunate to benefit from talented teachers and advocates whose belief in my ability far outstretched my own; Chrissie White and Mary Schoeser are familiar names in the textile world, but our community is peppered with such pioneers whose vision and tenacity have impacted society beyond their immediate circle. In this issue, we spotlight these unsung heroes: Jenny Tiramani, the principal of the School of Historic Dress, whose force of personality galvanised a team of enthusiasts to create a world-leading institution. Dan Driscoll, the founder of The Anou, developed a computer system based on pictograms to give illiterate artisans in Morocco agency over selling their work to a global audience. The founders of NGOs in Kutch, India, who have worked tirelessly for decades to elevate and preserve the region’s unique crafts and eliminate exploitation. Others, such as Her Majesty Queen Azizh of Malaysia’s Royal Pahang Weaving prison project, use their privileged platform to benefit others. We celebrate these individuals whose tenacity has turned their passion to good use. Over the last decade, we have seen entrepreneurs and influencers take centre stage as the monetising of crafts has come to represent success in our community. Some early adopters have garnered a large following, as described by Beth Wingarder in her article Historic Clothing Come Back and we thank them for enriching our lives. It is a seductive ideology that declares anyone and everyone can achieve work-life balance by pumping their passion for profit. The trend exacerbated by the cost of living crisis, accessibility of platforms such as Etsy and Folksy, the romanticised version of the life of craftspeople portrayed on Instagram and the minimal financial outlay needed to initiate textile crafts. This is only part of the story. The labour innate to many textile crafts conflicts with the profit motive, killing the joy and leaving makers working long hours to fulfill orders for little remuneration. I am inspired by Dr. Christine Millar, who states that sewing as a hobby allows her to engage in art on her terms. The idea that something beautiful only has value once sold makes me question the value our society places on making. I leave you with some food for thought – can textile crafts have value solely because they give us pleasure, define our identity, and make us feel fulfilled, or do we have to register a domain name every time we start a new knitting project? With this issue, I grant our readers permission to potter. Polly Leonard, Founder Published 15 October This issue went to press on 30 September, before the recent events in the Middle East.
Teaching Nabokov's Lolita in the #MeToo Era and Online seeks to critique Nabokov's Lolita from the standpoint of its teachability to undergraduate and graduate students in the twenty first century. The #MeToo Movement has spurred a reassessment of what constitutes appropriate professional and sexual relations, a reassessment that has challenged how we teach our students, especially when we are studying controversial works. The time has come to ask ? in the #MeToo Era and beyond, how do we approach Nabokov's inflammatory masterpiece, Lolita? How do we read a novel that describes an unpardonable crime? How do we balance analysis of Lolita's brilliant language and aesthetic complexity with due attention to its troubling content? This volume offers practical and specific answers to this question and includes suggestions for teaching the novel in conventional and online modalities. Essays by distinguished Nabokov scholars explore the multilayered nature of Nabokov's Lolita by sharing innovative assignments and creative-writing exercises, teaching approaches to especially challenging parts of the text, methodologies of teaching the novel through different mediums from film to theatre, and new critical analyses and interpretations.
