More Bible Study and Sabbath School Resources Using a simple tea bag you can share the key points of the Gospel story. You will need: 1. A tea bag (any folded teabag will work) 2. Scissors 3. Blank Piece of White Paper 4. Fire (match, lighter, etc) 5. Table or other flat fixed surface What each thing represents and what to do with it: Teabag – you and me (filled with sin) Label – What the world says you are String – Tied to the World. But when Jesus died on the cross it set us free! Scissors – Jesus' Grace Cut String – When we ask God to take over our life he gives us a new identity. Free from the world we rest in the Master’s Hands. Cut Bag – Jesus opens our heart Poor tea onto white paper– and removes all the sin. He makes us as white as snow. Stand tea bag up – Jesus then gives us the strength to stand. To really stand! For the time in our lives we aren’t bent by Sin. Pick up paper – But Jesus doesn’t just leave our sin lying around for people to look at. As far as the East is from the West – That’s how far the Bible says our sins are removed from us. The Bible says that our sins are thrown into the deepest part of the sea. Throw tea over shoulder, show paper – And then not only are we as white as snow, but our record is clean. As if we had never sinned! Bag – Once we are set free from the world, saved by Jesus and purified from our sins, Jesus never abandons us. Light match – Jesus promised that he will send the Holy Spirit to burn in our hearts and lives. Light bag – And we will continue to burn for Him until Jesus returns to take us to Heaven to live with Him for eternity! bag rises off the table and floats up into air! Often the bag comes back down and you can adlib something about the millennium and the return to Earth in the New Jerusalem after 1000 years. (have fun with it!)

Zacchaeus is a real-life example of the power that Jesus has to change our hearts. The goal in this lesson is for the children to feel the darkness and ugliness of sin, and then experience the joy and miracle of forgiveness when Zacchaeus meets Jesus! Bible Truth: Jesus has the power to forgives my sin. Bible Story: Jesus changes Zacchaeus' heart. Bible Study: Luke 19:1-10; I Corinthians 5:7 teach cha-ching! To tell the story of Zacchaeus "hands-on" style gather up these items: children's picture Bible, or flannel graph scenery and characters a small bag or coin pouch loose change a cut-out of a black heart and a white heart Peak your class's interest in your lesson by shaking the bag, and letting them guess what is inside. They will probably easily guess that you have money in your bag! Pass out a coin for each child to hold throughout the lesson. (Remind them that they should never put coins in their mouths!) Read the story of Zacchaeus from a children's picture Bible, or tell it in your own words with visuals, such as flannel graph. Introduce Zacchaeus as a short man, who was a tax collector. His job was to collect money that people had to pay to the king. But Zacchaeus took more money from people than he was supposed to. If someone was supposed to pay one coin to the king, Zaccahaeus made them pay two coins, and he would keep one of the coins for himself. That is called stealing. Zacchaeus was rich and had lots of money, but nobody wanted to be his friend because he stole money from them. He had a dark sinful heart. Hold up the dark heart as you describe Zacchaeus' dark and sinful heart. Go on to tell the rest of the story of Zacchaeus meeting Jesus, as you show pictures from the children's Bible or manipulate flannel graph characters. At the conclusion of the story, talk about how amazing it is that Jesus changed Zacchaeus' heart! He used to be a man that stole people's money, but now he gives his money away to people! Jesus did a miracle! Only Jesus has the power to take a dirty, sinful heart and give us a new clean heart! Zacchaeus repented, he turned away from his sin, and followed Jesus! Hold up the white heart as you describe how Jesus changed Zacchaeus' heart. Lead the class in a prayer, asking Jesus to forgive their sin, and change their hearts so they can follow Jesus like Zacchaeus. After you pray, collect the coins from the children. Tell them that they are giving the money back just like Zacchaeus did after he repented. sing Zacchaeus (was a wee little man) is a Sunday School classic, and the perfect song to reinforce the story they just heard. Be sure to do some actions with the song! The Repent Song is the same song we learned along with the story of John the Baptist, so it's great review and repetition. Follow the link for the lyrics and actions. The Bath Song is a great song about how Jesus washes away our sin with "super soap." The "call back" format makes it really easy to sing along! craft color & paste Here is a coloring sheet from Sermons 4 Kids of Jesus talking to Zacchaeus in the tree. Cut pieces of green paper, or green tissue paper into leaves for the children to glue onto the tree. zacchaeus meets Jesus A good craft is one that helps children retell the story that they learned. This craft does exactly that! You will need: this print out in (black & white) or (color) card stock scissors hole punch yarn green tissue paper glue clear tape crayons (optional) To prepare, print the print out page onto card stock. Cut on the dotted line, and cut out Zacchaeus. Punch a hole at the top and bottom of the tree. Cut out approximately 1" x 1" squares of green tissue paper. Cut yarn into 16" lengths. In class, provide glue for the children to attach the squares of tissue paper to the tree as leaves. Lace the yarn throught the holes and tie it behind the tree. If using the black and white version, provide crayons for the children to color Jesus and Zacchaeus. Tip: Tie the yarn near the top of the page, and attach Zacchaeus to the bottom of the page. It is easier for the kids, if you let them glue on the leaves before you add the yarn. Use clear tape to attach Zacchaeus to the yarn. Tip: Set the clear tape under the yarn, sticky side up, and then press Zacchaeus onto the tape. Move Zacchaeus up and down the tree to retell the story! up and down the tree For this craft you will need: this tree pattern this Zacchaeus pattern green construction paper jumbo craft sticks yarn scissors hole punch crayons glue tape To prepare, cut out the top, leaf portion of the tree pattern, and use it to trace onto green construction paper. Cut out tree and Zacchaeus figures. Punch a hole near the top of the trees. Cut yarn into approximately 7" lengths. In class, provide crayons for the children to color Zacchaeus, and the jumbo craft stick. Help them attach the tree to the craft stick with glue. Tape Zacchaeus to the yarn, thread the yarn through the hole in the tree, and tie the yarn off in the back to move Zacchaeus up and down the tree. Paul went before Governor Felix in our last lesson. This week, Paul goes before Governor Festus. Then, Paul stood before King Agrippa, and he is almost persuaded. Review: Remember that Agabus warned Paul not to go to Jerusalem. Paul went to Jerusalem anyway, because he was willing to do whatever God wanted him to. Paul was beaten by the crowd and the chief Captain, Lysias, put him under protection and when Paul’s nephew heard that 40 of the Jewish men plotted to kill him, he went to the prison to tell Paul. When Paul’s nephew informed Lysias of the plot, Lysias had soldiers take Paul out of Jerusalem. Paul went before Felix. He was a very bad Roman ruler. Felix kept Paul a prisoner for two years. Lesson: Scripture for today is Acts 25 & 26. Then, finally, Felix was sent to Rome and Festus took over. He went to visit Jerusalem to check out the capitol, and while meeting the with the high priest, the same men that wanted Paul killed, were still angry at Paul, and they talked to Festus. Since Festus was a new governor, the Jewish leaders tried again to have Paul taken back to Jerusalem. They wanted to kill him on Paul's journey back. Festus didn’t know about their plot. They told Festus THEIR STORY about Paul, and of the things THEY were accusing him of. When Festus returned to Caesarea, Festus asked Paul if he would go to Jerusalem to be tried. The Jewish leaders were hoping for this. But Paul said “I haven’t done anything wrong. If I have, I would be ready to die. I appeal to Caesar.” Festus couldn’t deny Paul, because of his Roman citizenship. Festus agreed to send Paul to Rome to be tried in Caesar’s court. As Festus wondered what kind of report to send to Caesar, King Agrippa and Queen Bernice visited. They ruled Galilee. They stayed with Festus for many days and Festus told them about Paul. When Festus explained Paul’s story, King Agrippa wanted to talk to Paul. The next day, Paul had another hearing. King Agrippa and Queen Bernice came in to see Paul with 'great ceremony" [pomp]. Other important men attended also. Read Acts 26:3 Paul told King Agrippa that he is an expert of customs of the Jews and even he is questioning what they are saying. And Paul is happy to be able to speak to him with the truth. Paul talked about Jesus and how he learned about Jesus when he was blinded by a light on his way to Damascus. He told them that Jesus had died on the cross and was raised from the dead. Paul said that he has been teaching about Jesus all over Judea that people should repent and turn to God. Acts 26:20 Paul told King Agrippa that he is just saying the same things that the prophets said. Moses said that a Savior would come and suffer and then rise from the dead, who was Jesus. Paul asked “Do you believe the prophets? I know that you do.” In Acts 26:28 King Agrippa told Paul that “Almost you have persuaded me to be a Christian.” Paul knew that ALMOST was not enough. We sing a song called "Almost persuaded”. King Agrippa didn’t want to give up his lifestyle. King Agrippa didn't want to live like Jesus wants us to live. He knew Paul was right, but just wasn’t willing to change his life. When King Agrippa stood up, that meant that he didn’t want to hear anymore. The guards took Paul back to his prison, while King Agrippa, Queen Bernice and Festus talked about Paul. They knew Paul didn’t do anything wrong, but since he appealed to Caesar, they decided Paul had to go to Rome for a trial. This is today's project, except that I put together the project (for my age group) and we use it during the lesson, then it is for them to take home. Cut out the parts, and then as you can see from the first photo, I used a craft knife to make the slits on the sides of the inside box for the slider to go through. Fold the tabs in half, and push the slider through, from bottom to the top, and back through the back. It should look like the next photo. Then, glue the tabs on each end of the slider to keep it from falling through. I used Aleene's Tacky Glue to glue the tabs on the ends. This is the full page printable. You also have the choice of a half page, so everything to print is on one page, and both are in black and white also. Personally, when I am printing for my class, I will print the full page for me for a visual, and the half page for the students. If I am making it to use at home with the grandkids, I will print full page for them. This is the first in a four part series this month for Joshua. This lesson discusses Moses, then Joshua taking over leadership for the Israelites. Cathy uses these visuals with a magnetic board. She cuts the pieces out, numbers them on the back (this set is already numbered on the front for you), laminates them and adds thin magnets on the back. Put your title up first (Moses then Joshua for this lesson), then add and take away each visual as you teach the lesson. Some of the visuals are the same as what you will see next week, if you'd like to combine them. You won't have to print all of those, unless you like to keep everything in its own pack. They can also be used as visuals alone, a flip chart, and/or a bulletin board. These visuals can also be attached to large craft sticks to be help up while teaching.
