we made slime! + it was a hit. happiest boys ever. +++ i found several recipes on pinterest. we decided to go with this one. pour your glue into a bowl. (we used 2 - 4oz. bottles so that both of my boys could do the pouring) fill the empty glue bottles up with water. give it a little shake before pouring the water into the bowl. stir it up and add a drop or two of food coloring. we went with gavin's fave - GREEN! add 1 tsp. of borax to 1/2 cup of warm water. slowly add the borax solution to your bowl. keep stirring! your slime will develop quickly, you'll need to use your hands to finish mixing it. have fun!

is almost here and I still have a few more items that I would like to finish. But as usual, I seem to think of things at the last minute and run out of time. I always say to myself, I'll have to do that next year, but then I usually forget or put it off until it's too late again. This is why I have accumulated so much crafting stuff, in the hopes that I will one day actually complete all these projects! Does this sound familiar to any of you? But I have finished the other heart box I said I was working on, and here it is: For those of you who can't find a heart shaped box already made, this one is fairly easy to make. Just trace a heart shape onto chipboard(you will need 2) that you like (I found one on the internet- just search "heart clipart" and check off "images" on the left of your screen). On one of the hearts draw a smaller heart inside, about 1/4" smaller around the edges. Cut out the inner heart and you are left with a heart like the photo. Next cut two strips of thinner chipboard for the walls of your box (like the thickness of a cereal box) about 1 1/2" thick or however deep you want your shadowbox. I started at the top in the center of the heart and glued the edge of the strip to the bottom chipboard with small strips of thin paper (usually photocopier paper or thin paper bag paper, about 1/4 inch by 1 inch strips) down to the bottom of the heart. Do the same with the other side. Cut off the extra pieces of chipboard at the bottom where the two meet. I covered the inside bottom and sides with patterned paper before the top was glued on. Next, cover the top with the tissue tape, tucking the tape on the inside underneath and the outside of the taped edge will go on the outside of the box bottom, attaching the two together. After the top is taped to your heart bottom, cover the sides with paper. I used My Mind's Eye "Lost & Found 2" patterned paper, brads and sticker, My Mind's Eye Valentines diecut and paper, and Maya Road thin spools. I also made these two cards: This card was made with the My Mind's Eye Valentine collection. I love the patterned paper with the banners which I stitched and then cut out. I used Basic Grey's Kissing Booth collection for this card. The folded doily was cut from a coffee filter using a Cheery Lynn die and the "forever" charm is from Prima. I also had my monthly tag exchange to do which was supposed to include hearts. Urban Scrapbook just got in another Memory Box order and I was happy to use their new heart dies. The dies I used were: After cutting out the flourish heart, I glued it to the cut out plain heart. I then covered it with a Metal Foil Tape Sheet from Ranger. Using a paper stump or stylus I rubbed the entire heart, getting into all the corners. The heart now looks like its been embossed. I then painted a thin layer of black paint, then red, and gold. I let this dry, then rubbed off the paint on the raised parts with a paper stump. Next ink the the heart with red, and emboss with clear embossing ink. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this very good but Tim Holtz did this technique on his 12 tags of Christmas (I think it was tag 3 or 4). I gathered up tissue and glued it to the back, then cut out a black heart a little bigger and glued it to the back. The fine gold coiled thread wrapped around the heart is antique gold bullion angel hair. (purchased at Tinsel Trading -an amazing store in N.Y) The tag itself was embossed with Tim Holtz's Valentine folder on glossy paper and then inked. I cut out the cupid with Tim Holtz's smaller die, then inked and crackled with Rock Candy. I then cut out the Valentine border (love this die!) and attached it to the back with ribbon on the side. Love those new dies, I will be finding reasons to use those hearts! The plain heart has a clear plastic center that has a grid for accuracy. With just 1 week until Twist is published, I'm treating you to a little taster of what the book holds! It also happens to be National Chocolate Day here in the UK, which in my opinion is definitely the best 'national day', and one worth celebrating.
Me again! My friend, Jeanne found the cutest blank cardboard spools at Red Lead Paperworks. She bought some and invited me over to her house to play and make some vintage Valentine spools. So, I packed up some Valentine papers, some Valentine stuff that I always keep on hand and off I went for a play date. Here is what I made ... The spools come in a package of 6; three different sizes. We covered them with Valentine papers and then embellished them, using stuff we had on hand. It's amazing how quickly they went together for us! It was so much fun!!! Here is a closeup of my first spool. The paper is from Hobby Lobby. It's cute paper just covered with Retro Valentines. The little heart on top of this spool is from some treat bag toppers (package of 24) that I got less than half price last year after Valentines. They match the paper! The little red bead garland is from Christmas stuff, as is the tinsel garland. Add a glittery red heart and some pretty red ribbon and wha-lah...spool number one! The second spool is my favorite. It is covered with My Minds Eye paper. Then I added a piece of glittery adhesive rick rack (from Christmas stuff) to the center of the spool and a little "jewel" heart on the free space of the bingo paper. The little hearts cascading down the spool are punched from Valentine papers that I had. This is a Martha Stewart punch. Then I punched a little hole in the top of each heart and gently ran some red wire through each heart and wrapped it through the hole as I added them to the wire. Then I glued the top and the bottom of the wire to the spool. Next I added the little pieces of red tulle, tied to the wire. The little hearts are free moving and I love that!!! Another Jeanne "find" from Red Lead....these Penny Dolls. Aren't they fabulous? They come in a box of 5 and they are a white bisque finish. I loved the dolls but didn't like the flat white bisque finish. So, here's a trick... I covered the dolls with Glossy Crackle Accents. When it dried, the dolls were glossy like porcelain and had all of the little hairline cracks you see in them. Then I added just a little Gathered Twig to the dolls and wiped away the excess. I LOVE THEM NOW!!! They look so vintage and just like they have been dug up in the factory yards of Germany! I made the crepe paper rosette that they are standing on. It's cream crepe paper (aged with Gathered Twig) and edged with Xmas Red Stickles. I glued the crepe paper rosette in place. Then I glued on the dolls, added the glittery heart behind them, then the little glittery sticks to the left. Finally I added the little tinsel garland around their feet to hide all of the gluing. The third spool is the smallest one. It features Tim Holtz' Cupid Movers and Shapers die cut at the top. He is set in a "flower" made out of pink tulle. The spool's top is edged with vintage pink tinsel garland. Cupid was cut out of chipboard. I wanted him to look really old and almost like a thin porcelain piece. And since there was so much cream in my Valentine paper, I wanted my Cupid to be light, not red or pink. So, I gave him a basecoat of Butter Cream acrylic paint. When that was dry, I covered him in Distress Rock Candy Crackle Paint. When dry, I added just a little Fired Brick Distress Ink to give just a hint of red or pink tones. Then I added some Vintage Photo and Gathered Twig to bring out some sepia tones. He still wasn't quite right so I added some Gold Paint Dabber to his edges and washed a little Gold Paint Dabber over him; wiping off the excess. Perfect! I love the imperfections that the Distress Crackle Paint left behind! It gives him that much more character and makes him look even older. Cupid is hold a little bouquet of flowers that I wired together, added a gold glittery heart (that was a leaf until I cut it into the shape of a heart) and added a gold wire bow. I added some little red rosebuds to the pink tulle he's standing in and one bigger glittery heart to help support him on the top. It's amazing how something so plain can turn into such cute Valentine decorations with not a lot of expense! Valentines Day will be here before you know it!! Why not make some spools? You think they are cute for Valentines Day? Imagine Easter....Halloween....Christmas!!! Oh boy...I better order some more!

This year I committed to not going overboard on Valentine's Day decorations. In fact, I tried to only use what I already had on hand. But when I saw some super cute Tissue Tassel Garland at Target, I was seriously tempted. But for $10, it just didn't seem worth it. Like a good DIY girl, I instead decided to make my own DIY Tissue Garland for less than $3! I should also tell you that I plan to use all these decorations for Lucy's upcoming 5th birthday party at the end of January, so it's a win-win! DIY Tissue Garland

I am so very excited to share this project with you today…a new collection by Heidi that is available at Michaels. A kit with all things Instax in mind. This week you have already seen a couple of the #hsMediaTeam members share a few different projects. Be sure to check out Kim and Maggie's blog to see what kit they are making pretty. This is called the Light Banner Kit. It contains all things to create a sweet Instax banner that lights up! Included are several gorgeously glittered Instax frames. There are also 6 large pendants, plus the light strand. An assortment of mini pendants and clips are also included to clip all the pieces up to the light strand. oh…and less I forget, the kit also includes mini gold tissue tassels too…are you dying already? And when I put it all together…this is what I came up with. Embellishments from the Michaels Stickers were used to pop a bit of pink amidst all that fabulous gold and glitter. Let me show you how simple it is to create these framed pendants: 1. Gather a few supplies: Instax Printer a glitter frame Puffy Number Stickers glitter tape (I used Marquee Love tape) 2. Print an Instax photo. 3. Clip a glitter frame over the photo 4. Slip a mini pendant from the kit, and a notched piece of glitter tape under the clip. 5. Add the ‘perfect’ and star puffy sticker to complete. Do that again and again until you have all the framed images you desire. Embellish these pendants as much or as little as you want. It's just that simple. I made this banner to celebrate my daughter’s upcoming 12th birthday. Taking photos of her from years past, I printed them out on the Instax Printer. This banner alternates a framed image and then a large pendant. The pendants include Michaels Wood Words. Each of the framed photos has a mini pendant from the kit. On the mini pendant I included her age using one of the numbers from the Puffy Numbers Stickers. Another idea is to layer a mini pendant with a large pendant as I have done with the ‘fun’ tag. The last framed photo is made up similar to the first one. Don’t forget to incorporate those mini tassels. Adorable! When all was complete…I created a little vignette and hung up the banner…oh and lit the lights!!! That is how simple it is to create with the Instax Light Banner Kit. This kit would be beautiful for any birthday or anniversary celebration. A great way to decorate your home or a party. Or even make one up for a gift for someone…they will be blown away by your thoughtfulness that includes this kind of pretty stuff. supplies: Instax Light Banner Kit.
