How do you convert your grandmother's treadle sewing machine into an awesome heirloom spinning wheel? With surprising ease, is the answer! This is a complete and very detailed set of plans that show how to build a spinning wheel head that is capable of handling any sized yarn and attach it to the treadle sewing machine table, without destroying the original appearance of the treadle machine. Made popular by the First Nations people of the Cowichan, in Southern British Columbia, the 'Indian Head' Spinning Wheel, as it has become known, utilizes the power of an old cast iron sewing machine treadle. To the best of my knowledge, these machines have never been commercially produced and the dozens, perhaps even hundreds of treadle-mounted, Indian Head spinning wheels have all been built at home ...and they are all unique! Having encountered and used quite a few of these machines, it was clear that they were all slightly different and that they all worked well. Even the less-skillful craftsmen managed to produce a functional spinning wheel. The only thing lacking has been a clear set of plans to enable anyone to make their own. That gap has now been filled right here. The build-your-own spinning wheel package contains no fewer than twenty nine detailed diagrams, plus many close up photographs, as well as a detailed description of the various parts and their attributes. This spinning wheel is perfectly suited to creating heavy/chunky yarns and especially art yarns, which are often lumpy, bumpy, uneven and frequently too large to fit through the narrow orifices of most commercially produced spinning wheels. It will, of course, produce any weight of yarn you desire, but if you specialize in fine yarns, then the cast iron flywheel might be too powerful for such delicate work. These Detailed Plans Show How To Build Your Own Heirloom Spinning Wheel Not only do these plans enable you to build your own spinning wheel; one which will be passed on through the generations and considered beautiful in centuries to come, but every penny you spend on these plans goes directly to assist the animals at The Llama Sanctuary. Most parts of the spinning wheel can be constructed with simple hand tools. The bobbin and the orifice require a lathe, but that doesn't mean you have to own one or know how to use one! You will be amazed if you ask around, just how many people have a lathe in their garage and would just love to help you! There's only one thing stopping you from jumping in and building your own - and that's fear! Fear that you aren't good enough to build it or fear that you don't know how. With the Internet at your fingertips, there are thousands of people out there who willingly help others to achieve their goals. We live in the age of information, but it doesn't mean we can't still be manually creative. ...and if you have any questions about the build, just send me an email.

Bleibt kreativ, Maike

Hello my dear friends, this past Sunday morning was not very nice when it came to the weather. We had quite a storm that started in the middle of the night which woke me up at 4.15 am and kept me up for a few hours. Fortunately everything went well the rest of the night/early morning but we still had high wind warnings all day. So... what does a girl do when there is no point heading outside? ... she makes a new tutorial to share with her lovely, sweet and thoughtful bloggers! And that is what I did. I love my tiny crochet little flowers and my modest violets a lot because of their beauty and because they are so quick and easy to make and they can be used in so many ways. That's why I thought that it would be nice to create something little that will be perfect to pair up with either of them and that would be ... a little crochet butterfly. After a few tryouts and one of them went terribly wrong, I was happy with the look of the little flying fellow that I created and I was ready to share him with you and here he is ... ... my little 'Flutter~By'. You will need the same things as if you were crocheting my tiny flower or the modest violet ... ~ a crochet hook ~ I used a 1 mm hook ~ crochet yarn that is right for the strength size for the size of hook ~ scissors ~ a black marker (I will show you what for further down) ...that's all! The little butterfly is very easy to make and it is again only one row. I have given you the instructions in the written form and again as a chart so you may pick which one you prefer to use. And this is how you make the little critter ... ... make a magic ring leaving a little tail, it will be needed later. Now crochet the following into the ring ... ... 6 chain stitches, 1 double treble, 2 treble, 1 double crochet, 3 chain stitches, one slip stitch ... next ... 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet, 1 treble, 4 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch ... now ... 4 chain stitches, 1 treble, 1 double crochet, 3 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch ... and finally ... 3 chain stitches, 1 double crochet, 2 treble, 1 double treble, 6 chain stitches, 1 slip stitch ... and that is it!! Leaving a thread 'tail' for pulling ~ cut your thread now. Take both of your thread 'tails' and pull them very tight to make the butterfly form. Then tie a knot in the thread 'tails' and pull very tightly again ... ... then cut them off short leaving about half an inch. These are now your little critter's antennae. This is a neat little butterfly ~ just over the size of a penny. And this is where a black marker might come in handy. If you prefer your little flutter~by to have black antennae ... ... then using your marker, very carefully dye them black but make sure you don't get too close to the body so that you don't accidentally mark it. And that's all that's to it ... you are done! I decided to use a small earring as the butterflies body, but you can use anything you would like really or leave it just as it is. I hope you have enjoyed my latest tutorial ~ it was really neat to make it! It is so nice when you stop by here at Todowlen and visit me, so maybe I will see you here soon again. I hope you are well my dear friends and life is treating you kind. Have a peaceful and creative day, Karen B.

I have been tossing around the idea of making something with a pringles can for a while. It seems like a fun place to store treasures, but I thought it might also make a cool toy. I was very excited to find a project idea online for a kaleidoscope made from a pringles can, but I wanted to put my own spin on it. My project steps are below. Enjoy! For this project you will need: Wax paper empty Pringles can (washed out) Tape Holographic paper in silver (for inside of can) and another color (for outside of can) Hammer and nail Gem stones (mine were sticky on the back) Be sure to wash your Pringles can first thing. Let it dry, and then you can work on your kaleidoscope. Nail a hole through the bottom (metal) part of the can. This is the part you will look through when your scope is finished. Turn the can over to the other side. Use the silver holographic paper (I found this for 50 cents in the scrapbook paper section of the craft store) to cover the inside of the can. Tape it in place, with the edge lined up to the open part of the can. Now that the inside is covered, you can cover the outside of the can. This holographic paper had a sticky side, so I peeled the back off and secured it to the outside of the can. I did not do that on the inside, because it would be too difficult to smooth out the sticky part. Tape is enough to secure the paper on the inside. Once the outside is coated, you are ready to work with the gems. Glue/stick the gems to the inside of the lid. You can also add some gems to the end of the can where the lid will go. Cut out a circle of the wax paper and tape it to the outside of the lid. Place the lid back on the can, and your kaleidoscope is finished! By looking through the kaleidoscope while facing light and turning the lid, you will see the gems reflecting off the holographic paper inside the can. This creates a kaleidoscope effect. I hope you've enjoyed this craft--another great project to do with kids this Summer!
