Jesus the Good Shepherd Door Hanger I decided to post this printable by itself since it can be used with so many lessons. I originally created it and used it with the preschool class for the Lost Sheep. There is a completed teacher's visual in color if you want to just use it as a handout. It also has the door hanger in color and black & white for the students. I cut everything out for preschool and they glued the sheep on. Click here to download. This is the lesson that I originally designed this printable for. This will be available March 17.
I know it's been a long time since I've done any posting. I mean a LOOOOOOOOONG time. We've legitimately been quite busy. Good busy. Productive busy. I've also become really involved in our amazing local church. I love it! Our kids love it! We all love it! I have been having a lot of fun creating fun lessons for the kids. Hands on activities to help relate the stories. Here is one that went over really, REALLY well! Jesus is our Shepherd. We are the flock. John 10:14-16 (NLT) "I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me, just as my Father knows me and I know the Father. So I sacrifice my life for the sheep." Luke 15:3-5 (NLT) So Jesus told them this story: "If a man has a hundred sheep and one of them gets lost, what will he do? Won't he leave the ninety-nine others in the wilderness and go to search for the one that is lost until he finds it? And when he has found it, he will joyfully carry it home on his shoulders." After talking to the kids about Jesus being our shepherd. How a good shepherd always looks after his flock and takes care of them. Protecting them, and providing for them. If one gets lost, he always goes looking for them. I dyed cotton balls all different colors. See below. After the story and the discussion, I put all the different colors of cotton balls into a paper bag and let the kids each pick one. That color "cotton ball" was actually their color of sheep. They had a "missing" herd hidden all over the room and they were in charge of going and collecting all of their lost sheep. The kids really enjoyed finding them, and not only that, they really took care to help out one another. After all the sheep had been collected, we played a few more games with them sheep. We played "Popcorn Sheep." Where all the sheep get tossed into the air, and everyone has to gather their sheep as fast as they can. We also had a little relay where we put the sheep at one end of the room and their cups or "homes" at the other end. They were allowed to race each other and only pick up one sheep at a time and bring it home. After you play all the games of finding your herds of sheep, follow up with the questions of what a shepherd is and does, and how Jesus is our amazing shepherd. Hope you've enjoyed this lesson! Here is a play dough mat to help children explore the story of Pentecost. Click here to print out the mat, laminate and let the children use play dough to make tongues of fire coming from the heads of the disciples. Think about: How would you have felt if you had been a disciple on that day? What might the other people, who saw and heard the disciples have been thinking and feeling? Have you ever felt the Holy Spirit? How did the Holy Spirit help Peter? How could you ask the Holy Spirit to help you? Pray: Pray that we will come to know the Holy Spirit working in our lives and helping us. Pray that the Holy Spirit will help us to speak to other people about who Jesus is.

I used this idea in an assembly yesterday, focussing on people we trust and what it means to trust God. This would work really well if you are exploring miracle stories or stories about trust. Suitable verses to use with it might be: Joshua 1:9: Remember, I commanded you to be strong and brave. Don’t be afraid, because the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” Psalm 56: 3 When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. John 14: 1 Jesus said, “Don’t be troubled. Trust in God, and trust in me I have to admit that this trick is not an original idea. I found the trick in this book: Simple Science Object Talks by Heno Head Jnr and would definitely recommend getting cold of a copy if you can! You will need: A glass of water (about half- 2/3 filled) and an index card. This is what you do: place the index card over the top of the glass, making sure that the whole of the rim is covered by it, and press down. Hold onto the top of the card with one hand and move your other hand down the glass, towards the bottom of it. Carefully flip the glass upside down, making sure you keep holding the card in place. You may get a TINY bit of drip page at this point, but don't panic! Now slowly move your card holding hand out from underneath and the card should stick, holding the water at bay! I love using science in assemblies because it is generally fool-proof, as long as you have a little practice first. I got a teacher in the assembly to sit at the front and asked if they trusted me to turn the glass of water upside down on top of their head? Even if I covered it with the card? They were not too eager! I then performed the science and it went down very well! We talked about the fact that what was holding the card in place was the air pressure pressing upwards (stronger than gravity pressing downwards). Please forgive my scientific explanations- they are not my strong suit! We can't see the air pressure but we know it must be working or the water would drop out. We can't see God but we know that he is there holding us up and supporting us too. The teacher might not have wanted to trust me, but I knew what I was doing and God knows what He is doing! Talk about: What is trust? Who do you trust and why? Have you ever trusted God? When might you need to God? Encourage children to all have a go at he trick, but make sure you have something ready to collect the drips just in case!
