As we began planning for our Youth Standard's Night, I was so excited when I found Judy Cooley to come and speak to us. I had seen her gorgeous paintings of the youth dressed in the armor of God and knew that she would be perfect for the evening. My thoughts were confirmed as I spoke with her on the phone, of what she might speak about! The morning of Standard's night Judy asked me if I would take part in a little experiment and then share my experience that night during Standards Night, of course I agreed. The day though was filled with crazy busyness and I soon started to worry about when I would be able to do what she had asked me to do. There was a moment, between the children getting home from school, having to fix dinner and get my son to his game, that I was able to sneak away to accomplish my task. The Experiment I was given.... My Experience with the Experiment.... I finally, found a moment where I was able to complete the experiment. Slyly I hid away downstairs. Now I can not say that it was as gorgeous and peaceful as the Sacred Grove. But, it was a place where I knew that NOBODY would come and disturb me. I was in the unfinished, dungeon like room, that I get to call my craft room. When I knew I was alone and would not be disturb, I choose which question I was going to ask my Heavenly Father. The question was, "How can I be a better mom?" It is something that I continually strive for, to be a better mom to my three boys. There's always room to be better. I followed the instructions of the experiment and I must say, from the moment I began my prayer to my Heavenly Father, I felt of the Spirit. In the cold, concrete walled room, I felt warmth and the love from my Heavenly Father. To begin my scripture study, I randomly choose a scripture to read. I began to read and was in awe of the scriptures I was reading and the answers I was already receiving. The scripture I read was, Abraham 5:18. It speaks of Adam leaving his mother and father and cleaving unto his wife and becoming one flesh. The answer the Spirit spoke to me was, that I need to rely on my husband more, to help me become a better mom. We are one in this parenting thing! We are partners in marriage as well as partners in parenting. I felt impressed that we need to counsel more with each other about each of our children and how we can help each one progress. I decided to keep reading, this time I read, 1 Nephi 19:7-9. This scripture for some reason kept popping up everywhere I looked, so I knew that there was something there that I needed to read. What stood out to me was that our Heavenly Father is our GREATEST example of a parent. He shows us how He would like us to parent our children. As I thought of the scripture I thought of how the scripture speaks of some of God's children forgetting Him and not listening to His counsel. Comparing this into my own life, sometimes I feel like my kids do not listen to me. You know how it is when you say something several times and they either don't do the thing you ask them to do, or they keep doing the thing you've asked them to stop doing. It is incredibly frustrating. Well, how does Heavenly Father handle it???? The scriptures say with love, kindness and long suffering. So how can I apply this into being a better mom to my kiddos? PATIENCE!!! That is the word that screamed to my mind. Kindness, love, endurance (aka long suffering) and lots of PATIENCE. I am so grateful for the experience I had and the opportunity I had in sharing it with our youth and their parents. My testimony of prayer, scripture study and the Holy Ghost has been strengthened. I have no doubt in my mind that our Father's love for us runs so deep. He is their willing to give us answers to anything we need greater knowledge or understanding of. The Holy Ghost and our Father work together in perfect harmony to give us those answers. The Rest of Standards Night!! The whole night was just a beautiful evening were the Spirit filled the room. Judy did a beautiful job. She actually gave the youth four different "Experiments" to try and had examples of each. Mine was the fourth, and some of our young women participated in the other three. These "Experiments" can bless each of our lives. Youth as well as, leaders, parents and ward members. To end the evening we had some milk and cookies! I really should have taken a picture, the table display was super cute with a pink chalk board that said "Milk and Cookies". The Paintings... I love Judy's beautiful paintings of the youth draped in the Armor of God! You can find the prints by clicking the image below. They are also offered in bookmarks, Young Women & Young Men.

Despite the storm brewing in the sky that night, we had a GREAT turnout for our May Relief Society meeting! The theme was "Rock, Paper, Scriptures." We focused on ways to come closer to the Savior and "hold to the rod." Carrie opened up the evening with some personal experiences and a wonderful video emphasizing the importance of daily scripture study in our lives. We then split into three classes and got to take part in some great discussions. ROCK Teryl told us about her grandfather and the house he built one rock at a time. It was a three year process but the results were a house with a strong foundation and walls that would stand through the years. Even after the house was vandalized, it still maintained its structure and has been fixed up and still stands today. She tied this in with our own lifelong efforts to build upon the rock of our Redeemer. Helaman 5:12 states: And now, my sons, remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation; that when the devil shall send forth his mighty winds, yea, his shafts in the whirlwind, yea, when all his hail and his mighty storm shall beat upon you, it shall have no power over you to drag you down to the gulf of misery and endless wo, because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall. PAPER Brianne led a great discussion on journaling and how it blesses our lives-- and the lives of our posterity! We talked about different kinds of journals we can keep: scrapbooks online journals (someone suggested we all try out www.ldsjournal.com !) good old fashioned pen and paper journals family journals scripture journals gratitude journals blogs Not only can we benefit from looking back at past journal entries, but our future children and grandchildren may be able to gain something from them as well. If you think about it, the scriptures themselves are record keeping and "journaling" of ancient prophets. So, in a way, our personal journals we keep can be like our own "scripture" we are writing for our future children and grandchildren to learn and grow from. SCRIPTURES (Holding to the rod): Kimberly lassoed us up and took us on a little obstacle course to drive home her point. Her instructions to us were only this: "Hold on to the rope and follow me." So the group was all walking along clumped together in the loop of the rope. We thought getting up the narrow stairway to the stage was difficult... ...but that seemed like nothing when we realized we hand to climb under a small table!!! Kimberly just kept repeating "Just hold on to the rope and follow me." Most groups went through the whole thing trying to stay inside the loop of the rope. This last group made the realization as they were trying to cram under the table that Kimberly never said they had to stay in the loop. They just had to hold onto the rope! They realized that it would be much easier if they untied the loop and just each held onto it in a straight line. This was a great object lesson that brought us closer together as sisters (literally). We discussed the point of this exercise and applied it to our own journeys in life. Sometimes we get too caught up in doing things a certain way or a way we think it should be done or even the way that MOST people do it. But, that isn't always the most effective way. Ultimately, our instruction is to "hold to the rope and follow me"-- or hold to the rod and follow Him. We need to try to get rid of those distractions or unimportant things that sometimes make it so much more difficult than it needs to be! We shared different things we personally do to bring ourselves closer to Christ and our Heavenly Father-- different ways we have found to do things that work well for US personally. Whether it was methods of scripture study or ways to get rid of distractions in life. After these awesome messages we joined back together to close our meeting. Carrie invited each of us to take a rock from the table in the back of the room and write on it something that was a "spiritual rock" in our lives. Either a favorite scripture or quote. We can display these rocks somewhere as a reminder of having that strong foundation in our lives. And... of course we enjoyed some tasty refreshments together! We had fruits and veggies and dips. Our new friend Ann even brought some delicious Pilipino dishes for us to try! A tasty sesame noodle dish and some potstickers. We always have a great time getting together as sisters and visiting together. And tonight was no different.

Here is a game that we played on a nice summer night. Divide into two teams. Give each team a copy of the scriptures listed, a copy of the standard works of the Church, and a bag to put their “treasures” in. Each team looks up the first scripture and reads it carefully to discover what they need to find that will fit into their sack. After they find the first object, they read the second scripture and find that object, and so on. Each scripture will tell them what they need to find, except number ten, which has special instructions. The first team to collect all nine items and complete clue number ten wins. 1. Matthew 7:25 [Matt. 7:25] 2. Psalm 102:11 [Ps. 102:11] 3. Jeremiah 8:8 [Jer. 8:8] 4. Doctrine and Covenants 45:37 [D&C 45:37] 5. Mark 10:38 6. Ezekiel 37:16–17 [Ezek. 37:16–17] 7. Matthew 10:30 [Matt. 10:30] 8. Exodus 3:5 [Ex. 3:5] 9. Moses 1:41 10. Mosiah 2:17–18. To finish the game do something this scripture is talking about. After both teams have finished, share what you did for number ten with the other team.
