In Queensland, Australia, almost 700,000 hectares of wooded land was cleared for development in 2014 alone. With nowhere else to go, many of the estimated 1,000 wild koalas left on the Gold Coast are finding themselves getting dangerously close to roads and other human hazards, a mistake that can cost them their lives

This charming scene, besides being enjoyable to look at, has a number of details which add to our delight. A wizened old Franciscan friar is living alone in his hermitage out in the presumably German woods. He has come outside to water his garden, while there is a fire in his hearth inside. Three rabbits wait by his door, and a little deer is nosing his way towards our hermit. We think when he comes out, his woodland friends know that a snack may forthcoming, fresh from his fenced-in garden. Also, if you look, there is a stone staircase next to the deer, going up to where we do not know, but would like to. The giant stone outcropping next to the cabin is symbolic of his living on the Rock. Artist Ludwig Sckell (1833-1912) was a prolific German painter, very famous in his day, one of the great landscape painters of the 19th Century. He was actually born on a mountain, Lock Mountain in Bavaria, and his father was a famous horticulturist, Carl Ludwig Sckell. He spent most of his adult life in Munich, and was an honorary member of their Academy of Fine Arts. Our source, www.askart.com, says his work has “a hint of the Barbizon style,” which we’ll take their word for. Many of his paintings come under auction these days. “Der Einsiedler.” Oil on canvas. 55 x 46 cm. ** IMPORTANT ** THE IMAGE IS SMALLER THAN THE PAPER! Piunde & Pindaundu Lakes, July 85. The hut is by the lower lake. We picked up our gear and walked out that day. We left the hut at 2am with our guide Arnold and two Germans with their guide. The idea is to arrive at sunrise as the clouds tend to come in after that.

Mimi is a young girl about seven. She lives in a wooded area without a lot of friends or close neighbors. The animals in the woods are her friends though and she is rarely lonely. She tells people that the animals can talk to her. She has been able to understand them and sometimes to speak to them since she was younger. In fact they can talk to her though many of her family members consider her odd for saying so. Mimi is not allowed to go out into the forest alone. A large black wolf lives in the woods and she's been warned that wolves carry children away. She wanders out into the woodlands one day and finds herself lost. She's wandering around trying to make her way out of the woods when she hears a cracking noise in the woods behind her. The large black wolf emerges from the thicket before she has time to run or even try to climb a tree. She manages to scramble to a lower branch as the wolf ambles slowly toward her, not appearing to pay much attention to her. She thinks that it's odd that he isn't running towards her if things are as she's been told and wolves like to carry away children. She watches him for a while until he goes away, scrambles down and makes her way, after a time, to home. The next day she goes back to where he was with a bit of meat for him, climbs the tree and waits.

The Lost Elf by Sara Daniell is a children’s story written in simple rhyme about a little elf who longs to find a place to belong. The nameless elf has been living alone in the woods until one night Santa comes and takes her away to the North Pole. Going to the North Pole to build toys is the elf’s dream come true. The elf is happy to finally have a place where she fits in. I thought that the illustrations were well drawn and eye catching. I read this with my four-year-old and she liked it simply because Santa and toys were involved. She also really liked that the elf was a girl. She had questions as to why the elf was alone. The elf finally finding her happy place was nice. It shows children that dreams can come true. I also liked that Daniell has the line: “Being different is okay.” I just wish that she'd put in a little bit more detail about why the elf was so different. In spite of the questions I have about this story, I did like it. Anything that makes my child smile earns a thumbs up from me. A cute story!
