I've had such a love-hate relationship with data notebooks over the years. I've always worked in "Baldrige" schools that have required every teacher to have a data wall and every student to have a data notebook. My first few years in the classroom, this would be something that I spent my first week of school
If you are living in a constant battle between tracking data and planning instruction...you know you’re not alone. Like most teachers, you are probably looking for ways to minimize the time you spend grading, and recording data so you can maximize your time planning and prepping. You’re in the right place.
I want to post a lot more about this during the school year, but I wanted students to have something to place in their Data Folder (click here for the Data Folder sheets) about how to set SMART Goals.

Hi Friends! As teachers we have to collect lots of data on our students throughout the year. This data drives our instruction. I work...
As teachers, we used data all of the time. We use data to plan our lessons, to form our groups and to evaluate our students. This is the first year, I've given my students the responsibility of making choices in our math workshop based on their data. I found this picture on Pinterest and decided to do the same thing. Link to My Teacher Friend's Blog Post about Math Benchmark Data {Taking a very deep breath.} Here is our data from after the first benchmark math test, given some time in December. No judging. The chart isn't about judging. The chart is about staying focused on our goals and working together to achieve them. I'm sure some of you have immediate reactions to this information being so SO public. I was a bit worried about that also. I was worried that some of my students would feel horrible seeing their names under "I need help do to this." But that wasn't the case. When I showed them the chart, (whose name is stolen from The Book Whisperer), I explained what each part meant and how they should use it. Instead of being depressed or paralyzed, I found the students to be VERY motivated to more out of the "help" category and toward the "expert" category. Looking back at My Teacher Friend's post, I am using the same percentages as she is, but rather than writing 0-59% I wrote "I need help to do this." For 60-84%, the students are under "I can do this most of the time." And for 85% and above, the students are "experts." Along the left side, I used I can statements written from the Common Core Standards. For this benchmark, the students were expected to add and subtract decimals to the hundredths, multiply whole numbers using the traditional algorithm and divide whole numbers using the traditional algorithm. One quick glance at this chart can tell you exactly what I wanted to review first. And the students were able to use this data also when I made these: I love binders for center activities. In our school, we use the EnVisions Math Program. I decided to abandon their games and instead have the kids chose their own task cards based on their data. They can also use the task cards in our small group tutoring program or if they finish work early. Each one of the "I Can" statements has a set of task cards for the kids. The sets are fairly small, just 6 cards with the answer cards in the baggie, so the students can self check their work. They look at the data chart, find their name in one of the categories and they self select the task cards. They can also use the chart during our workshop to locate an expert to help them if I'm busy with a small group. Once they finish the task cards (for one standard) and check their work, they can request an assessment. Oh yes. They REQUEST assessments. I bought Miss Nannini's Standards Based Common Core Assessments for Fifth Grade to use after the students complete their task cards. They complete the assessments and I mark them right away. If they score into the next level on the chart, they get to move their sticky notes. They love it. Here you can see how many sticky notes have moved from the "I need help" category to the "I can do this" and even all the way to expert! I have several students who have really put a tremendous effort into moving all of their sticky notes into "expert." Those little pink stickies really stand out when they make it to expert! THIS is what the data chart is about. It's about celebrating student achievement, no matter where our students begin. I don't want to pretend I have this all figured out, because I don't. I've found one way to help my kids focus their efforts in math workshop. One in which we ALL share the data and the responsibility. Tell me, is your data public?

At the beginning of every school year, I like to take mass baselines for all of my students so that I have a good clean idea on where they are toward meeting the goals set for them on their IEPs. Maybe they had a summer miracle or maybe they’ve regressed a little. Today I’m going […]
Every Friday, we are setting aside time to reflect on our goals for the week and continue them or create new ones. This practice fits in beautifully with our Leader In Me program and helps to cultivate student responsibility, especially in the areas of homework and classroom behavior. If you haven't checked out my previous post on creating SMART Goals and our classroom board, be sure to read that HERE. Today, we began by jotting down some thoughts and reflections on our Weekly Goals Reflection Sheet: We went through an example goal together and worked on explaining why a goal was or was not accomplished this week. This provided some *fantastic* discussion about learning from "failures"-- and my kids really got the chance to understand that not achieving your weekly goal was more about a learning experience than just a perceived black mark on their week. We also looked back at the SMART Goal sheet from last week and many could see why they did not achieve their goal based on one or more parts of that acronym (mainly, Attainable). I had them attach their sticky note goal to the blank square and then judge themselves on their effort put forth to achieve this goal. This was to reinforce that even if you didn't hit the goal, the energy and effort you put into it matters. My kids were surprisingly honest with this and even those who did achieve their goal gave themselves straight or frown faces because they felt their goal wasn't challenging enough.... perfect feedback to consider when making next week's goals! The last section is all about "Next Steps" they will take with the upcoming week's goal. Will it be a continuation? Will it build on last week's goal or be something new altogether? Why? I wasn't too stirct with this last section since I wanted them to brainstorm some ideas for their new sticky note. The last thing I had them do was to find a Goals Partner. I let them choose the person they wanted to work with because I wanted it to be a friend that they felt comfortable sharing with as well as someone they actually wanted to check in with throughout the next week. They shared their reflection sheet from last week together and chatted about next steps for a few minutes. I had them jot down their partner because I plan on using this system frequently and build upon what a good Goals Partner does (and does not do, ha!) to help their friend reach their goal. I am fortunate to have a friend (and Goals Partner, I suppose!) who always encourages me to write WOW Goals, or Within One Week Goals. This was the perfect acronym for my students and fit in with our goals timeline, so today we adjusted the first sentence to read, "Within one week, I will... I'll know I've made this goal because..." and we hung this wording right below our SMART Goals chart. Although this is only Week 2 of our SMART Goals work, I am already seeing some improvement with their wording and especially the Attainable goals they are writing. I have seen quite a few kids stay on the same path, but others hop around, and many are creating goals for themselves that I would have never thought to include. I love how they've grasped the structure this provides and I'm hoping with the incorporation of Goals Partners, next week's reflections will be even stronger and their goals even more successful. If you're interested in the Weekly Class Goal Reflection, it's available as a freebie in my TpT Store HERE. Now, to think of my own WOW Goal for next week... Find more Goal-Setting Posts here:
