Charles Rennie Mackintosh's finest building was not loved at first but became a mark of his genius.
In the late nineteenth century, a new style of embroidery developed at the Glasgow School of Art, which influenced Western embroidery for many decades to come. The new style was developed following changes at the School that took place after 1885 when Francis H. Newbery was appointed as director. He allowed students to develop their own individual talents, rather than forcing them to follow a strict, Classical form of learning.

The Glasgow School of Art is a public institution that dates back to 1845. They held a design competition for their new building in 1896. A young draughtsman (draftsman) of the firm Honeyman and Keppie won the competition. Unfortunately (or fortunately as we may look at it now) the school did not have enough funds to complete the entire plan, and only the central and eastern wing were completed. It wasn't until 1907 that funds were found to complete the school. Mackintosh was invited back to rework the west wing design. The Glasgow School of Art is a Grade A listed building.

Born 70 Parson Street, Glasgow. Architect, designer and watercolourist. He was a designer in the Arts and Crafts movement and the main exponent of Art Nouveau in the United Kingdom. Married Margaret MacDonald in 1900. Designed a few buildings in and near Glasgow, including in 1909 the Glasgow School of Art (where he had studied). Sadly, when he left Scotland in 1914 his architectural career was largely over: he was depressed and alcoholic, and the war meant very little was being built. He spent some time in Walberswick painting some delightful flower studies. In London (1915-23) he produced fabric designs and, 1920-21, he was close to taking on the Mystery House as a project (info at Cheyne House), but it was not to be. He moved to France where he continued painting. Seriously ill he returned to London in 1927 and died at 26 Porchester Square. In his lifetime he was appreciated in Germany and Austria, but not in Britain.
