Old photograph of the old church in Gladsmuir near Tranent, Scotland. The name Gladsmuir stems from the Scots word gled, meaning a bird of prey, usually a buzzard, combined with muir; the Scots form of moor, thus Buzzard's Moor might loosely translate Gladsmuir into English. The philanthropist George Heriot, jeweller to James VI, King of Scots and founder of Heriot's Hospital, later George Heriot's School, in Edinburgh, was born in Gladsmuir. The old ruined kirk can still be seen and explored. The graveyard contains several graves from both world wars. Statue depicting Jackie Crookston who was shot dead during the Tranent Massacre of 1797. Massacre was an end result of the local people objecting to the conscription of the local men. Statue commemorates all those lost during this rare bloody episode in Tranent's History. More Info can be found here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Massacre_of_Tranent The statue was created by sculptor David Annand and unveiled in 1995. Initially the statue was of Jackie on her own however, shortly after the child was added to give more stability. Janie Crow (Jane Crowfoot) is a UK designer who creates the most stunning patterns that are easy to understood and follow. Her Persian Tiles blanket and Mystical Lanterns Blanket patterns are extremely well known and can be found in many Instagram posts by makers and creators all over the world. Here you will find a selection of her beautiful Festive Patterns. Each pattern comes in a printed booklet form and written in UK crochet terms (there is a UK - US conversion chart in the booklet). Oonagh Knitted Cushion Cover: I designed this cushion cover for a workshop trip to the west of Ireland. As the focus of the trip was the knitting heritage of the Aran Islands, that sit at the mouth of Galway Bay, I chose to use traditional cable stitch designs and textural patterns. To give the cover a more contemporary twist, and because I adore a bit of bling, I also added some beads using a slip-stitch method that enables the beads to create a cross pattern. I used traditional cream yarns as the shade for the first cushion cover with gold and green beads to echo the national colours of Ireland, but I had a feeling it would also look great in red with silver beads, so I set about creating a new version especially for the festive season. I really love the way the silver beads sparkle on this cover. Streymoy Knitted Cushion Cover: I designed this project for a workshop group who joined me on a Stitchtopia cruise around the UK and over to the Faroe Islands in 2018. I based this design on traditional Faroese fairisle designs, where 2 shades of yarn are used in each round. The design uses 2 main shades (grey and cream) and 3 contrast shades. The cover is worked in the round and is fastened with 7 buttons. Gladsmuir Crochet Cushion: I love putting the decorations on the tree or around the house at Christmas time. I I originally designed this crochet cushion cover for the Edinburgh Yarn Festival Publication in 2017. The cover is predominantly made in shades of grey, but has turquoise and chartreuse highlights. I think it would look lovely in multicolours and would make a great stash buster too! The cover uses a few different crochet techniques including block crochet and wave stitches. The cover is made from motifs that are worked from corner to corner and then joined together using double crochet and chain stitches. the back cover is different from the front. Norwegian Wood Knitted Cushion Cover: I designed this hand knitted fairisle cushion cover a few years ago for a trip I tutored on a cruise ship around the coast of Norway. I looked at traditional Norwegian patterns and added beads to areas to create more interest. The cushion is made in 3 pieces and is not worked in the round. Nordnorge Knitted Bag: I designed this hand knitted fairisle bag a few years ago for a trip I tutored on a cruise ship around the coast of Norway. I looked at traditional Norwegian patterns and added beads to areas to create more interest. The bag is knitted in the round and the pattern includes instructions on how to make a Dorset button.
