I just got pictures from our New Beginnings program for our young women group. It was such a fun night! We had a Survivor theme. (My friend Jen was the mastermind behind the theme). When the young women and parents arrived we split them up into teams (8 teams for each of the 8 values), and they each got a strip of fabric in their value color to tie around their arm. We talked about how the Young Women program and Personal Progress program will help the young women "survive" their teenage years and prepare them for the great things ahead. One of my counselors made these cute programs and took the time to burn all the edges. We introduced cute Taylor who will be turning twelve this year and joining us. We gave her a "survival kit" with things she'll need in the YW program. Each of our young women talked about a Personal Progress value by reading the value scripture and talking about how that particular value was important in their lives. (We have a small group of young women, so everyone got to participate). That was definitely the highlight of the night! After each girl talked about her value, she added her value box to the totem pole. And then we talked about how the totem pole represented the strong core of faith that will come from living by these values. In between the girls' testimonies of each value, we had "challenge" questions that everyone completed with their team. Examples of challenge questions are "Who can approve a value project?", "How many hours should each value project take to complete?", "What is the new website for tracking Personal Progress online?". I think it was a fun way to go over some of these details with the girls and their parents. Refreshments were chocolate cupcakes with crushed oreos and gummy worms on top. Very Survivor-ish, right? This was such an awesome night to celebrate our girls and the Young Women program. I love serving with the young women!
A special thank you to Michaun Torgersen who is in the Utah National Parks Council, Black Diamond district (Spanish fork area) for donating this amazing artwork, and to Mary Halvorson from the Hobble Creek District for this beautiful and fun craft idea. These wall hangings or ornaments are a fun way for boys to become familiar with the Scout Oath or Scout Law. They can be made from the PDF's shared here or you can have the boys write them with their own handwriting. Print or write the oath/law on cardstock and then glue it to a piece of cardboard that is the same size. It needs the strength of the cardboard to support the sticks. Cub Scouts will have fun finding sticks to use for the frame. Cut sticks to appropriate lengths using garden pruners and glue into place with hot glue. You can add decorative stitching after the sticks are glued into place using a small cord or waxed string and a large eyed needle. You may choose to add just a few stitches on each side or do continuous stitching all the way around. If you do stitching you will want to punch your holes with the needle and then sew through the holes. This will help get your stitches where you want them much easier! Embellishments such as a paracord square knot, a few beads and a charm, mini pinecones or other items from nature may be added. There are really no rules. Craft Lightning Week is back with Scout Crafts! All week long our hosts, Angie from The Country Chic Cottage, Carolina from 30 Minute Crafts and Laura from Me and My Inklings along with me and some other crafty friends will be sharing scouting related crafts! Click the Craft Lightning link at the bottom of my post to see all the fun and inspirational Scout Crafts that have been created this week! Now on to my project! Craft projects are always fun to do with Scouts, but when that craft is a game the fun really begins! Follow along below to see how to make these DIY Ball in Cup Games (or rather FLY and FROG games) from recycled TP Tubes! STEP 1: Squash the bottom of your TP tube and cut off about 3/4". I used the glue line as my guide, so no measuring needed. STEP 2: Paint the inside of the tube pink using Americana Paints by DecoArt Peony Pink, let dry. STEP 3: Measure and cut rectangles from Kunin™ Eco-Fi™ 9" x 12" Craft Cuts Classicfelt Kelly Green. Secure with Beacon Adhesives Felt Glue, let dry. STEP 4: Cut out frog arms and legs from Kelly Green Kunin Felt and circles from Neon Green Kunin Felt. Attach felt arm and leg pieces and wiggle eyes with felt glue, let dry. I didn't have enough of one size wiggle eyes, so I mixed and matched the sizes to use up my stash! STEP 5: Cut a 24" length of jute twine and attach to inside bottom edge of tube with felt glue. STEP 6: Staple bottom edge of tube with 3-4 staples. STEP 7: Attach wiggle eyes and wings cut from Silver Grey Kunin Felt to 1" in diameter black buttons. Thread jute twine through button hole, tying a knot in the back to secure. Once complete, your Scouts will have hours of fun swinging the Fly into the Frog's mouth! This craft can be used to teach your Scouts about recycling and the eco-system in a pond or stream, as well as working on hand/eye coordination and dexterity. Now its time to HOP over (pun INTENDED!) to see what all of the other fabulous Designers have created for this round of Craft Lightning SCOUT CRAFTS! Just click on this Craft Lightning icon below... With World Thinking Day fast approaching this is the time when leaders are securing the countries their troops want to represent. With that in mind I would like to offer quick tips on the countries I have represented in the last few years so if you are hard pressed for time you can just steal ideas! And as you all know that is fine with me! If I can make one leaders day easier then I am happy! France: Swaps - Safety Pins with red, white and blue beads to mimic flag use return address labels to print out Troop # and Country and attach to safety pin Food - French Bread with jam Apparel - short or rolled up jeans, mary janes, white shirts and leaders sewed felt beanies with simple elastic opening Israel: Swaps - Mezuzah - small plastic test tube (ordered on-line from medical supply, 500 for about $30) with fake scroll (parchment paper with the definition of the word "Mezuzah" printed on it) inside similar to torah capped with wooden cap found at Hobby Lobby Food - potato latkes, hummus & pita chips Apparel - We made graduation caps out of blue, plastic Solo bowls and blue Solo paper plates and added a tassel to represent the countries high level of intelligence, scholars and education Skit - 3 of our girls with Jewish roots taught the girls how to say a Hanukkah Prayer in Hebrew http://www.jewfaq.org/prayer/chanukah.htm Russia: Swaps - Russian flags made from address labels with the flag printed on one side and our Troop # and country on the other, wrapped around a toothpick Food - We gave out Russian chocolates which I ordered on-line: http://www.russiancandystore.com/Candy-by-the-1-2-lb--pg1.html Apparel - We made and wore Sochi Olympic gold medals to represent the upcoming 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia one year (directions for making these are here: http://follow-the-leader.homestead.com/Crafts.html ) they were asked to wear sweatpants and jacket or red, white and blue and my other troop wore scarves shaped around the face which I found at Walgreens for about $5/each another year Skit - The girls sang "A Russian Child Song" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dlQuIfyzq54 Peru: Swaps - Mini ponchos made from fabric, used safety pin to attach country name and Troop # Food - We served Inca Cola in dixie cups. It is a banana flavored cola that can easily be found on the internet. I purchased 5- 2L. On our table we displayed mangoes with the "Peru" sticker I found at the grocery store. You could also serve this fruit. Apparel - The girls made ponchos out of fleece. I purchased 1 yard of fabric for each girl and they cut out a hole for the head. Some of the girls cut fringe along the bottom edge. Skit - We made cute little spiders out of styrofoam balls I spray painted in black. The girls attached black pipe cleaner legs and googly eyes. They attached elastic to the top of the spider so they could bounce the spider as they sang "The Itsy Bitsy Spider" in Spanish Itzi, bitzi araña, tejió su telaraña. Vino la lluvia, y se la llevó. Salió el sol, se secó la lluvia. Y Itzi, bitzi araña, otra vez subió. South Africa: This year we intend to represent South Africa which should be a lot of fun. One of my Cadette's father is a British decedent from South Africa and will talk to the girls. Also I have a travel agent from Africa that visits often scheduled to talk to the girls as well. Swap - Jungle Candy (Oriental Trading Company $13.50 for 144 individually wrapped pieces) CLICK HERE Food - Bilatong, a salty beef jerky Apparel - traditional African head wrap (brightly-colored scarves from Wal-Mart)), hoop earrings (if the girls own a pair) large wood beaded necklace and bracelets Skits - have been removed from our WTD event due to time restraints Switzerland - Last year my Junior Troop represented Switzerland and the Girl Guide/Scout World Center, The Swiss Chalet. This year my Brownie Troop has decided to man this table. Swap - Last year we made adorable Swiss Cocoa cups of hot chocolate using large marshmallows. We used small pieces of pipe cleaner for the handles and a marker to color in the hot chocolate on the top of the marshmallow and a small wisp of cotton glued to the top to mimic whip cream. This year we plan on handing out cosmetic wedges to look like Swiss Cheese with a safety pin attached. Food - We gave out original Nestle Candy Bars which originated in Switzerland. You can order them online CLICK HERE This year we will serve swiss cheese Apparel - I always find apparel tricky. With so many girls it is hard to count on them having items at home so it much easier for me to provide the items. Last year my girls tried to look like Girl Guides and they wore a khaki colored t-shirt with a red bandana much like the GG their age wear in Swiss. This year my Brownies will be making a Swiss Shirt. They will use an erasable fabric marker to trace a large "+" on their shirt. Then we will use painter's tape and line up on the drawn lines. Next, the girls will paint the taped in area in white with acrylic paint using a foam brush. Finally the tape will be removed. The shirts should look like the Switzerland flag.
