Earn the Yellow Daisy Petal If you are able to serve Thanksgiving fare, ask families to bring a traditional favorite food that is on their holiday table. Girls can help their parent prepare the dish (helpful) and then share it with the troop (friendly). The girls can also have a chance to speak and explain a bit about the dish that is being served. Another way for your troop to earn the yellow Daisy petal is to make an edible cornicopia. Get enough supplies for them to make two-one to eat and one to share with someone in their family. Here is a meeting outline for the first half of the year. Remember to be flexible and have fun! Congratulations on becoming a Daisy Girl Scout leader! You have done what many are unwilling to do...step up to the plate and give a group of young girls an opportunity to be a Girl Scout.. Even if you were a Girl Scout as a child, being a leader is a totally different experience, as well as a big responsibility. Besides being concerned with the pre-troop meeting paperwork, you have to plan what the girls are going to do each and every time you get together. The following is a guideline for creating your Daisy Girl Scout meetings, based on meeting twice a week from September to December. Feel free to adapt it to your schedule, as you may find some activities are better suited for your troop to do later in the year. Photo from Pixabay First Meeting Prep Work and Supplies For your craft, you will need to run off this Daisy petal worksheet on cardstock. Have blue tissue paper cut into squares for the promise center and bowls to place them in. The girls will use crayons to color the petals and crumple and glue the tissue paper to the center. Your First Daisy Girl Scout Meeting-September Your first meeting with your Daisy Scouts should involve a "getting to know you" or "ice breaker" activity. It is a good idea to have the parents stay and see how their girls are doing and how a meeting is run. You can also have a short parent meeting while the girls are crafting to discuss the year and to answer any questions.After saying the Pledge of Alligence, the Girl Scout Promise and the Girl Scout law (which the girls will repeat after you), have the girls sit in a circle and introduce yourself and your co-leader. Pass around an object (a silk flower daisy from the Dollar Store would be a fun idea) and have the girls tell their names, their school, and one special thing about them. Girls at this age will want to tell stories...gently remind them to keep it to one thing and then pass the daisy to the next girl. Next, it is time for the craft. First Meeting Prep Work and Supplies For your craft, you will need to run off this Daisy petal worksheet on cardstock. Have blue tissue paper cut into squares for the promise center and bowls to place them in. The girls will use crayons to color the petals and crumple and glue the tissue paper to the center. Make sure you only have crayons that represent the Daisy petals for the girls to use so no mistakes are made. The order they color them in does not matter. Take a picture of each girl with her Daisy as a keepsake of her first Daisy meeting.Close with the Girl Scout friendship squeeze and song and take a deep breath! You did it! The Girl Scout Friendship Song This is how you end your meetings. The girls stand together in a circle with hands crossed. The leader gives the girl on her right a gentle squeeze. It is passed around the circle and when it comes back to her, you sing this song.These girls sing it beautifully, and even add the final two lines! Your Second Daisy Girl Scout Meeting-Earn the Blue Promise Center Available on Amazon Before you can earn any of the Daisy Girl Scout petals, you will need to earn the blue promise center first . After all, the petals are centered on the Girl Scout Promise, and they need to be ironed around something. There are many children's books, like Robert Munsch's pictured here, that can help you teach this concept.After reading the story, you can make promise chart. At DKTK's website, you can make a customized chore chart for your meeting.. Ask the girls what they can promise to do at home to help out. Get your trip approval number and the required number of volunteers to accompany your troop. All paperwork should be handed in to you one week prior to the trip. As I tell my girls, "No slip, no trip!" Thanksgiving Crafts Once November comes around, the holiday season is in full swing. Along with your usual festivities, you have added planning Daisy meetings to your personal agenda. You can make meeting planning easier by doing a craft with a ready made craft kit. These can then be donated to a senior center when they are completed. This is an easy service project and is just one to incorporate any of the Daisy petals that inspire kindness and making the world better.These easy to make Thanksgiving crafts are perfect for Daisy Girl Scouts and easy for you, their leader! Your Seventh Daisy Girl Scout Meeting-Do a Community Service Project and Earn the Rose Daisy Petal As you enter the month of December, people tend to be in a jollier mood, as the winter holidays are arriving. Chanukah and Christmas are a time for celebrating, but not everyone is able to due to difficult financial circumstances. Such an important part of being a girl organization is the friendships made during our time in scouting. A troop of devoted friends that support one another will leave a lasting impression on your girls of what friendship means for the rest of their lives. Sometimes though, youngins need that extra push to put themselves out there, or could use an activity to help them branch out. Did you know? Friendship Day is August 5th, and a great way to celebrate is to play friendship building games together. These games are a blast, and are sure to warm everyone up to one another. Afterwards, have your girls pick their favorite quotes about friendship and talk about what qualities they look for in a good friend. This will not only encourage one another to be more kind, but also value the friendships they have made along the way. Friendship Games and Activities Friendship Swap and Necklace You can make friendship necklaces or SWAPS. Silkies (necklaces) you can get from Michael’s Craft store. Unicorn charms and rings from Amazon. 12 pony beads, 1 for each line in the GS law or just make a rainbow. Here are some different friendship games below and don’t forget to have fun! Minefield Set up an obstacle course at your next troop meeting. Pair up the girls, perhaps with a new friend, and let one verbally guide the blindfolded partner through the obstacle course. Switch up the course before switching blindfolded partners! Players have to effectively communicate and trust one another to finish first. Categories This game is a great way to help girls realize what commonalities they may have with each other. Call out different categories and ask the girls to arrange themselves based on how they fit into that category. Start out with basic things like eye color or favorite food, then move onto questions about pets, favorite school subjects, or who has moved before. Girls may realize something they didn’t know they have in common with each other. Give them some time later on to connect over these new discoveries. Speed up the game to make things fun, or slow it down if the girls are enjoying getting to know each other more. Extreme Rock, Paper, Scissors This tournament-style rock, paper, scissors is best with larger groups. Pair girls off and have them play best 2 out of 3 rock, paper, scissors. Ask the losers of the match to follow the winner to their next match, cheering them on. This keeps going until the last two winners face off, each with half their troop cheering them on! This is a great way to energize the group and foster some friendly competition. 2 Truths and A Lie This game is a classic for good reason. It makes players work together to figure out how they are being deceived, and gives the chance to learn about each other quickly. Have girls introduce themselves with 3 facts about them, but one is not true. The weirder the facts, the better! Sit in a circle so everyone feels more inclined to chime in. There's nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate. Unknown Here is a place to pick from 55 Other Friendship quotes to use with your troop. Dots When entering the meeting, place a colored dot on each girls’ forehead out of their sight. Without speaking, everyone must group up with those who have their same color dot. The troop has to work together in a unique way to ensure everyone gets into their right group. Your girls are bound to get to know each other a better with these bonding games. Enjoy! Friendship Bracelets Along with fun Friendship games have your girls make friendship bracelets to give to each other. A friendship bracelet is a decorative bracelet given by one person to another as a symbol of friendship. Friendship bracelets are often handmade, usually of embroidery floss or thread and are a type of macrame. There are various styles and patterns, but most are based on the same simple half-hitch knot. Updated April 2023 There is nothing as relaxing as walking through a beautiful garden or sitting down on a chair and relaxing as you sip a cold drink and admire the beauty around you. Gardening is a wonderful hobby and it can not only beautify your surroundings, but also relieve your stress levels. Getting down and dirty with your hands in the soil and planting in the fresh air…time seems to fly by. The Junior Girl Scout Gardening badge is one that the girls can do to help beautify an area that is important to them. If you meet at a school or a house of worship, you can ask them if they will let you plant a garden. When my troop was younger, the school actually had a Gardening Club, and that would have been perfect if this badge was available when they were Juniors. Photo created on Canva You will also want to collect seed catalogues for Step 2. A field trip to a nursery can also help you complete most, if not all, of the requirements for this badge. Step 1 Visit a Garden If the place where you meet has a garden or pretty landscaping, take a tour and have the girls observe how the flowers are planted and spaces, how color is used, and how height is factored in. Step 2 Explore Garden Design and Step 3 Learn How to Choose Garden Plants After a place has been selected to garden, then have the girls create their visions. Give them pencil and paper to plan, and look in the catalogue for what will grow in your area. Tropical plants will not do well in the Northwest and plants that need shade will not do well in an open field that gets direct sunlight all day long. Then they can cut out pictures and paste them in the appropriate spots. Step 4 Experiment With Seeds For this step, you will need: Egg Cartons Potting Soil Seeds Garden Trowels Newspaper Cup for water Pencil for poking holes Set of Kids Gardening Trowels Available on Amazon Lay out the newspaper so clean up is easy. Are you the leader of a Cadette Girl Scout troop? Here are some resources for you to use as you guide your middle school girls through this level of scouting. Cadette Leaders Need Practical Resources for Their Middle School Troop How many of you know a girl who was a Girl Scout past the fifth grade? If you are like most people, not many. When girls begin their adventures in Girl Scouting, they are as young as five years old and in kindergarten. Everything is exciting to them, and they are very happy with crafts, field trips and an occasional guest speaker. As the girls become Brownie and Junior Girl Scouts, it becomes more challenging keeping them engaged. They want more outdoor adventures like camping and fun overnights at museums and party places. As their leader, you do your best to comply with what they want while attempting to keep your own sanity. Photo from Pixabay By the time the girls finish the Junior level at the end of fifth grade, there is a dramatic drop in their ranks. As puberty hits full throttle and what other people think becomes more important, the coolness factor of scouting plummets and many girls no longer want to be associated with the movement. For my troop, this has not been our experience. I was the leader for six years, and this upcoming year I am stepping down from that role and moving to a co-leadership position. A friend of mine will be the leader, and ten of our eleven girls will become Cadette Girl Scouts. We are also very fortunate that the principal of our school is a former Girl Scout who earned her Gold Award years ago. She is a positive role model for our girls. The Challenges of Being a Cadette Leader Middle School Girls Are Not the Easiest to Be With! As a mother who has been through the middle school years once before, I can honestly say that I am not looking forward to replaying the drama of these early teen years. Relational aggression (female bullying), cliques, first heartbreaks, and monitoring social media use was challenging. Cadette leaders have to deal with all of this with girls who are not their daughters. Many times, a troop will inherit new girls at this stage because the girls' former troops have disbanded and are no longer viable. The girls wish to remain in scouting, but need someone to take them in. Leaders must be very aware of integrating new girls into their established troop and making sure that they are welcomed and accepted by the others. We are all sisters in scouting, and this is a great opportunity for new friends to be made. Cliques and leaving other girls out is not an acceptable behavior and needs to be thwarted. The Biggest Challenge Facing Cadette Leaders There is competition for your time! Photo from Pixabay As girls get older, their lives get busier. Once upon a time,dance and athletics were a fun activity. Many girls, including those in my troop, participate on travel teams for sports or competition teams for dance. This means hours of travel and practice that will interfere with Girl Scout activities. In middle school, girls are introduced to after school clubs. Modern society dictates that more homework is good, so teachers pile it on. For high achieving students, this extra workload can be a challenge, but for those who struggle in school, this creates more problems. Homework has to come first, even at the expense of a Girl Scout activity or meeting. Peer pressure is also a challenge. No matter how you slice it, Girl Scouts is not considered a cool activity. Adult leaders need to combat that with activities that the girls vote on and plan. When other middle schoolers find out that the scouts in their grade slept over in a museum, went on a long weekend to a water park resort or saved all their cookie money for a trip to Disney, then the cool factor is upped significantly. As the girls get older, meetings are supposed to be more "girl led", but with cliques, absences and forgetfulness, things might not get accomplished as they would with a responsible adult in charge. Of course, this is a life lesson that needs to be learned. As the leader, you are transferring the role of leadership to the girls. *This post contains affiliate links. Updated April 2023 As the girls in your troop get older, they will be able to take on more and more responsibility. One of the things they may already be doing is caring for a younger sibling for a short while when Mom or Dad are running a quick errand. But what if something happens while on their watch? Earning the Junior First Aid badge is one way for girls to be prepared. Step 1 Learn the Steps to Be Prepared This is a fairly quick and simple step to do. Have the girls create a small chart on a half piece of white construction paper. In red marker, they need to write these steps: Check-See to see if it is safe to check on the person. Then see if the person can talk or respond Call-911 Care-Stay as calm as possible and ask another person to get an adult if one is not around the immediate area This chart can be placed by the phone at home or on the refrigerator. Step 2 Talk to First Responders and Step 4 Find Out How to Handle Urgent First Aid Issues Ask a first responder, like a police officer, to speak to your girls as one of the steps to earn the Junior First Aid badge. Photo from Pixabay Find out if there is someone in your troop community who can talk to the girls about what it is like to be on the scene of an emergency. If you cannot find someone and you meet in a school, ask if the school nurse can stay a bit extra and be a special guest at your meeting. She or he has certainly had emergencies over the years and s/he can talk to the kids about what to do if something happens at home or at school. Include questions about how the girls should handle urgent issues to combine the fourth step with this one. Step 3 Make a Portable First Aid Kit If your girls did this as Brownie Girl Scouts, then they may not have it anymore. Even if they do, you can make a different version of the kit for them to take camping or to keep in their school backpack or Girl Scout bag. Parents can even keep this in the glove compartment of their car. The key to creating this particular kit is to make it portable, so it needs to be small. Inside you can place: Band Aids in different sizes Individual packets of a topical antibiotic Q-Tips for applying the ointment Individual packets of moist towelettes or alcohol wipes Have the girls write “First Aid” in Sharpie on the top. Step 4 Find Out How to Handle Urgent First Aid Issues Lots of kids have peanut or other life threatening allergies. Do a "Peanut Drill" on what the girls should do if someone in class has a reaction. One girl should run to the nurse, one runs to the office, one goes to the teacher next door, etc. Image created by the author on Canva Step 5 Know How to Take Care of Someone Who is Sick Talking to the girls about how to make others feel better when they are sick is one step in earning the Junior First Aid badge. Ask the girls what their parents or caretakers do to help them feel better when they are sick. Tell the girls what you and your co-leader do for their daughters, and what your parents did for you. Updated September 2022 What is the Cadette Girl Scout Silver Award? There are three levels of Girl Scout Awards-the Bronze (earned when girls are in Junior troops), the Silver (earned when girls are Cadettes) and Gold (an individual project girls must complete before they graduate high school). While leaders do have a hand in helping the girls earn the highest award at this level, they are truly a guide at the side. Image Created on Canva First, the girl must complete at least one of the three Journeys at this level. Then the girls have to pick a project that they want to work on alone or with a group. There is a lot of planning that goes on with this, but as an older girl, she needs to stand on her own two feet to figure out what will work and what will not. These projects are meant to "make the world a better place", an integral part of the Girl Scout Promise. Once the plan is complete and put into action, then the girl has to fill out paperwork, give it to her leader, and then celebrate her accomplishment! Please note that every Council is different. What may be approved in one Council may not be in another. Each finished project has had the paperwork signed and completed, and what you are reading are the results of those efforts.
