“Multi-level” can mean a variety of things when we’re talking about troop structures, but they all require a few extra steps of planning to ensure the girls are getting the most of their scouting experience. A few different examples of multi-level troops include: The majority/minority troop – A troop of 18 Brownies that has 2 Daisies who are younger sisters of the Brownies. In this case, the troop will focus most of their energy/attention on Brownie level activities, but make small modifications to ensure activities are fun for Daisies too, and help them earn their petals. The 50/50 troop – This is a truly mixed troop of two age levels that are side-by-side. This troop might have 8 Brownies and 10 Juniors. Another variety of this is the two-grade troop, which on Year 1 has Kindergarten and 1st graders (all Daisies), but in Year 2 has 1st graders and 2nd graders (Daisies and Brownies), so by Year 3 has 2nd and 3rd graders (all Brownies). In this case, the troop will ensure that activities are age-appropriate and complete award criteria for both levels. The MULTI-level – This is a troop with more than two age levels: they might have Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors. They might have Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors, or some other combination. In this case, the leader has far more planning to ensure the activities connect to award criteria and age-appropriate design than the other troop styles. It’s can be a lot of work, but becomes simpler with practice. An important note for when you view the “multi-level” Journeys and information in the Volunteer Toolkit: They are designed for Daisy/Brownie/Junior multi-level combination. *Note: these titles and descriptions (majority/minority troop, 50/50 troop, and MULTI-level troop) are not official titles by GSUSA, just a helpful description to differentiate between various troop styles. The term “multi-level” can also apply to leader trainings and girl events. If you’re considering opening your troop to multi-level or just getting started with a multi-level troop and looking for ideas to assist in planning and prepping for meetings, or planning an upcoming event for multiple age levels, here are 6 Tips to get you started: Know the age groups you’re planning for and how you want to include older girls (as participants or helpers). This is especially important for events. Be sure you’re collecting age/grade information on the registration form. If you don’t have any Cadettes sign up, then you don’t need to plan any Cadette activities. Additionally, we often make assumptions about whether older girls (Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors) would rather be participants and enjoy all the fun or serve as Program Aides and practice their leadership skills. Either way, we can be incorrect on their preference, so it’s best to discuss it with girls or their leaders. Be aware of how much time you’ll have and how much you can squeeze into it. For troop meetings, don’t forget enough time for getting settled, bathroom breaks, snacks, and clean-up at the end. Select the badges or Journeys you want to work toward. This can be overwhelming at first, but there are lots of resources available, even if you don’t have the Girls’ Guide or Journey books for each level: Volunteer Toolkit, badge charts, Journey bookshelf, badge explorer. Plan out the activities. This really just involves a lot of lists, to see where there is overlap between different age levels’ badges/activities, or to see where one activity might apply to several different badge topics. The process of comparing can be tedious, but with a little practice, it becomes smoother. Decide on a format. How will girls progress through the different activities? Is it best to be “round robin” style and have groups of girls rotating through different stations? Is it best to have one large group and one instructor leading everyone with helpers around the room (like most troop meetings)? Is it best to have an event “open-house” style where activities are set up throughout the whole time, but individuals or small groups can move between them at their own pace. The answer will depend on: size of the group, age of the group, type of activities, physical layout of the space you’re working in, and how much adult help you have. Decide how you’re delegating. Even though this is the last step on the list, do this at the beginning of your planning process. Identify right away how you can use help and ask for that help, specifically. Can someone bring the snacks? Who can be on the clean-up crew? Do you need activity leaders? Delegate from the beginning. Looking for examples and ideas? Unless you limit your troop to girls in one grade, you are going to have a multi-level troop at least some years. So, how do you handle having girls at more than one level? There are probably as many different ways as there are troops. This post will take a look at some of the most common and try to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the choice. We Aren't Multi-Level (even if we should be) Yes, some people just ignore the rules. Yes, that goes against Girl Scout policy and therefore the "respect authority" part of the Girl Scout Law, but for a troop that has an odd girl out--one girl who is a grade ahead of or behind all the others, this seems like the most simple solution. Everyone wears the same uniform and does the same activities. Who cares? Are the GS police going to come arrest you? No. The place this can catch you is on the higher awards. Girls are placed in levels by their grade in school and if Susie is a third grade junior in a troop with fourth grade juniors who are earning their Bronze Award, she won't get one because she is technically a Brownie, not a Junior. If the higher awards are a goal, then the girl who is not the right age for the troop needs to know when she qualifies and why. A Cub Scout Pack Approach There are some large multi-level troops that basically operate in the same manner as Cub Scout Packs. All girls begin and end the meetings together, but spend most of each meeting working with girls in their level under the direction of age-level assistant leaders. Some troops like this are of relatively normal size and became multi-level because they started off as a single level but two grades, so the troop is still pretty much run by two leaders. Other troops, no matter how they started, have made a deliberate decision to accept girls of all ages and to become more or less permanent institutions. One leader handles the paperwork. Another plans camping trips or field trips. Age-level leaders direct badge work or other meeting activities. A major advantage to this method is that it allows new parents to come into an established group with built-in support for new volunteers. Troops like this can acquire significant equipment and supplies. Leaders can find a niche and stay with it--the camping leader doesn't have to be the one running meetings and if Daisies are your thing you can be a permanent Daisy leader and groom a new mom to take over the Brownies when her daughter bridges--or you can leave your Brownie with Crafty Cathy while you teach canoe skills to Cadettes. Make It Work for Everybody GSUSA must have heard the complaints of troop leaders about the two year levels because the new program materials developed in the last five years, while different at each level, have significant overlap. In short, particularly if your girls are in a relatively small age band, you can find a lot of programming that they can do together. This programming includes: Think Like A...Journeys: At each level, girls can earn "Think Like an Engineer", "Think Like a Citizen Scientist" and "Think Like a Programmer". The requirements get more difficult as the girls get older, but the Brownie version is recommended for multi-level use for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors, and the Senior version for Cadettes, Seniors and Ambassadors. While the Journey activities in VTK get more complex as the girls get older, the format is similar across all levels such that if you have a troop with girls in two adjacent levels, there should be no problem doing the same version with both groups. Democracy: The five basic requirements for these badges are the same on each level, though the recommended activities are different. Space Science: There are versions of this badge for every level, and many activities could work with more than one level Outdoor Art: This is another badge that was developed for all levels. While the requirements vary, if you have girls close in age, you can do activities from both badges, and/or find things that meet requirements for one badge or the other. Camping: Each level has a camping badge Financial literacy: These "cookie" badges get progressively more complex as girls get older but the same activities can check boxes for more than one level. Coding For Good This series of progressive badges is for Daisies, Brownies and Juniors and each level covers much of the same material My Experience In our parish, girls normally bridge to other troops as they grow older. I took over the Daisies seven years ago, and had a mixed K-1 troop. When the first graders bridged to Brownies, I went with them and left the Daisies with a co-leader. She took new kindergarten girls. When her daughter bridged to Brownies, I went back to Daisies and planned to basically do the same thing again. I had the girls she left behind, plus some new recruits. It was a big troop that year but for a variety of reasons I lost a bunch of those girls. When we recruited kindergarten girls we only got one--and due to changes in the local schools we did not see that improving. The next year, all my girls but one bridged. I didn't figure I could abandon her, and one of the leaders of our older girls had a new Daisy, so I was going to have Brownies and Daisies. Therefore I recruited some more Daisies, thinking I'd try to train a mom to take them over. That didn't work out, and some of our older girl leaders left or decided to follow their current girls. So, this year I have second grade Brownies and fourth grade Juniors. When the girls were Daisies and Brownies, I basically ran a Brownie program and would relate what we were doing to Daisy petals, with the idea of doing five per year. We picked up a couple of other badges that worked on both levels. I'm sure there are troops that earned more badges than my girls did, but I know my girls had fun and learned. The one problem with the way I've been doing things is that in order to work things together so that everyone gets a badge, the badge choices have to be very leader-directed. In order to give the girls more choice and ability to plan their own programming, I changed our meeting schedule this year. We are meeting as a whole group once a month and that meeting will continue to be very leader-directed. I moved the other meeting from Monday nights to Saturday mornings. Brownies will be from 10-11 and Juniors from 11:15 yo 12:15. My goal is to get the girls involved in planning their level meetings. How do you handle a multi-level troop? Attach the wheel arrow with a paper fastener to the center of the wheel on the center panel 5. Save the petals somewhere for later (putting them in a ziplock bag and attaching to the back of board or in a girl scout binder works great!) You will need to access these petals each time your troop earns one and then attach (with either tape or velcro) the corresponding one to the daisy outline on the bottom of the right panel. 6. Attach the pots/flowers and owls/flags with either tape or glue to the left side of the panel to create your kaper chart. I have a multi-level troop of 1st and 2nd year Brownies. Only four of the nine Girl Scouts are bridging to Juniors this year and I want to make sure they don't feel like they are being pushed out of Brownies like some of the other poems I read. So here is my poem, revised to remove any years or previous Daisy experience. I hope the girls feel like they have earned an extra skill to fly but still feel like part of the same group. Food We held a vote at our last meeting for what type of treat to eat and cake won by a landslide. Our bridging ceremonies are planned during our year-end celebration, so I wanted the cake to celebrate the entire troop and not just the bridging Girl Scouts. I couldn't find a rainbow or GS themed cake without having to pay an additional $10 for a custom order so I decided to buy a standard balloon cake instead. On Amazon I found a rainbow cake topper kit that can be used year after year, so a tradition has started! My cake decorating skills are not good enough to write all their names, so I needed an alternative. The rainbow kit came with some clouds so I thought I could write all the names on the clouds, but there weren't enough clouds in the kit for the entire troop. I knew I would have a hard time matching the existing clouds so I decided to create all new clouds with my Cricut machine. The Juniors have purple clouds positioned higher than the others since they were flying up, and the Daisy has a blue cloud. I thought brown clouds would look like pollution so the Brownies have pink clouds. I used my Cricut to print and cut the clouds and then hot glued them to the skewers. I broke the sticks shorter to get the right height on the cake. And here is the result... Drinks The troop voted to have soda for a drink, but I was able to sneak in a little bit of a healthy alternative. Two of the Girl Scouts still needed to finish the slurp a snack part of the snacks badge. So I brought a bag of frozen mangoes, concentrated orange juice, concentrated apple juice, and Ginger Ale. They combined the ingredients they wanted together in a cup and loved it! No blenders needed, easy to customize for picky eaters, and easy clean-up! Decorations I bought the tablecloth and rainbow backdrop from Michaels in their Pride section in early June. They had lots of awesome rainbows and I wanted to buy more but we have other things in mind for our cookie budget. The Girl Scouts are still in love with balloons so our "bridge" was made from 10 helium balloons attached to weights from the dollar store. Some troops spend extra $$ buying party favors or presents but these Girl Scouts are happy just taking home the balloons and eating cake. Our ceremony was indoors so we didn't have to worry about the wind, but the AC kicked on and was blowing the balloons around so we had to move our bridge away from the vents (which made the lighting bad for photos but not a biggie). Awards The Juniors received Junior Mint candy with their Brownie Wings and bridging arc. They also received a bridging certificate and a Junior level badge tracker book. We also celebrated three Brownies who earned their Summit Awards and received their certificates and pins as well. Activities After the bridging ceremony we continued to the main attraction...swimming party! They voted for and had been excitedly awaiting for the trip to the local water park since February, and the weather ended up being perfect. This event and the excitement from these Girl Scouts makes all the freezing cold cookie booths worth the effort!

Cookie booth season is coming up soon so I plan on creating worksheets for my troop to complete during slow times at the booths.
